Abstract

This research investigates the level modality of Sukin skincare product advertisement in social media through the descriptive qualitative method. Kress and Van Leeuwen propose the theories supporting this thesis. The primary data sources in this thesis were ten visual advertisements. The steps passed in this analysis are selecting ten visual images, identifying the visual elements of the ten advertisements, categorizing the visual elements into visual contact, social distance, perspectives, modality, and putting them in the table. The result of this thesis shows there are 5 of demand images, 15 of offer images, 12 of far social distance, 7 of close personal distance, 1 of close social distance, 8 of high modality, 2 of low modality, 20 of frontal angle, and 20 of eye level. Thus, it can be concluded that far social distance is dominant, indicating that the company intends to show truthfulness and credibility in convincing the viewer to try the products. It is also demonstrated that the multimodal visual element plays a pivotal role in directing the advertisement's message towards the audience

Abstract

The margondang ceremony is completed with panaekkon gondang to open the galanggang 'na so marongit, tapian na so marlinta' which is followed by a manortor ceremony accompanied by onang-onang poetry. Poems sung by paronang-onang accompanied by gondang instrumental music at traditional ceremonies. The data of onang-onang poetry was taken at the Angkola traditional marriage ceremony, in the city of Medan. Barthes (1957:140-142) uses the concept of value according to Barthes (1957:140-142), namely: 1) values related to the subject; 2) values appear in a practical context; 3) value concerns the properties that are 'added' by the subject. taken based on the analysis data classified the results of the analysis of the values of the Angkola traditional onang-onang poetry, among others: the values contained in the lyrics of the Angkola traditional onang-onang poems include: 1. Values Relating to the Subject: a) The Value of Parental Love for Children and Son-in-law b) Advice for Living in harmony, c) Maintaining kinship relations. 2. Values appear in a practical context: a) Belief in the Almighty, b) Forms of Parental Love. 3. The Value of the Characteristics 'Added' by the Subject: a) Angkola Identity Value, and b) Aesthetic Value

Abstract

A metaphor is a figure of speech that contrasts two unrelated items and helps in the communication of complex ideas or emotions by drawing on familiar or concrete concepts. Metaphor is often utilized in poetry, novels, films, songs, and so on. This study provides a metaphorical analysis of the lyrics to "Another One Bites The Dust," a hit song by the British rock band Queen published in 1980. Using a semantic approach, the study investigates the numerous layers of meaning provided by the song's lyrics, which have been interpreted variously by fans and critics throughout the years. The paper offers a detailed analysis of the song's metaphors and the function of the metaphors, including analyzing the metaphor "another one bites the dust" as a euphemism for death in one Santa Fe High School shooting in 2018, one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States. The study concludes by reflecting on the song's lasting popularity and cultural relevance, as well as the difficulties and opportunities associated with understanding metaphorical meaning in popular music. Based on the analysis, the writers discovered 15 metaphor data and 4 metaphor functions in the lyrics of "Another One Bites.

Abstract

Humor is definitely the thing that makes people laugh. Humor can be seen anywhere, directly or indirectly, on TV or social media. The aim of the study is to analyze the humor techniques found in comments on video posts that are currently viral in Indonesia. This study is conducted using a qualitative method and Berger's technical theory of humor. This study uses one technical category from the four technical categories discovered by Berger, namely technical language. The language techniques consist of ridicule, infantilism, bombast, puns, sarcasm, irony, satire, misunderstanding, repartee, outwitting, and sexual allusions. The data about humor was collected based on comments from diverse users of Instagram, specifically those followed by the study's primary author.

Abstract

The article explores the public's response to Indonesia’s Customs official Twitter account. The research uses a qualitative approach, focusing on content analysis methods. This research also utilizing the speech act theory, with a focus on illocutionary acts. The research data was collected by screenshots of 25 responses on Twitter. The analysis revealed that the responses were predominantly directive acts (8 responses), followed by expressive acts (6), declarative acts (5), representative acts (4), and commissive acts (2). The predominance of directive acts indicates that many responses aimed to influence others to boycott the customs agency, reflecting a strong public sentiment against the institution. This study also highlights the critical nature of social media interactions with government agencies and underlines the need for improved public engagement strategies. We hoping the results of this research can provide deeper understanding into the dynamics of communication between government institutions and the public via social media and its implications for public acceptance and perception.

Abstract

In the field of conversation analysis, conversation is one way to approach social order. Conversations are not the seemingly disorganized and random objects they seem at first. This is a special locus of interaction where changes in speakers are repeated (occur), the parties speak at the same time. Gapless and non-overlapping transitions are common. The aim of this study is to analyze aspects of conversation analysis use in communication between Astronauts and NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) under the framework. This study use qualitative descriptive method is applied in this research. The data are collected by transcribe their utterances from Youtube and transcribing their utterances directly into written text. The result of this study shows that 6 types of adjacency pairs, from the data analysis found there are 47 utterances that consist of adjacency pairs. From the findings, there are 7 requesting – agreement, 11 assessment – agreement, 17 question – answer, 1 compliment – acceptance, 1 complaint – apology, 10 offer - acceptance  for adjacency pairs.

Abstract

In recent years, K-pop has expanded around all over the world, and its fans have created special ways that refer to their idols, such making use of animal emojis. This study examines how animal emojis are used in K-pop to convey alternate meanings, particularly when used in place of idol names. The study utilized a qualitative approach with the theory of reference as the theoretical framework. Data was collected from social media platforms, Twitter. The findings suggest that the use of animal emojis in K-pop culture serves as a form of the unique characteristics of the K-pop community and also a solution to convey meaning effectively within Twitter’s limitation characters. The discipline of cyber-pragmatics, or the study of language use in digital communication, is pertinent to this investigation. As a type of digital communication, the use of animal emojis in K-pop culture demonstrates how fans have adapted to the digital age and created their own language and communication style.

Abstract

This article presents and idiomatic analysis of the lyrics of Nadin Amizah, a talented Indonesian singer. The data collected was analyzed using qualitative methods, The data in this study were taken directly from Nadin Amizah's " Bertaut " Song lyrics. The article Begins by providing an overview of Nadin Amizah's highlighting and her use of posting storytelling and evocative imagery. It theb focuses on a line examination of the lyrics, identifying the idiomatic expressions employed and uncovering their underlying meanings. Thus, this research found 4 Simile Idiom in this research analysis that explained in the result and discussion part and this research also an correct the misunderstanding of the meaning of a song lyric that contains idioms so that the message in the song is conveyed correctly. Abstract

This study investigates the application of Critical Discourse Analysis to Narendra Modi's speech Maan Ki Baat. In this research, the focus is on the text structure and the ideology represented in the speech. The theory used is Van Dijk’s text structure model which concentrates on the three elements of text structures; macrostructures, superstructures, and microstructures. The research adopts qualitative research using critical discourse analysis to analyze the data. The data were analyzed through Van Dijk’s text structure model. The data collected from https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=oEB5RnaDZmE. This study has revealed that first the macrostructure of three speeches is about Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked Indians to stay more vigilant than ever against the threat of COVID-19. Second, the superstructure of the three speeches gives information about the condition of Indians and poor people against the effect of covid-19 and his recommendation to people in following the protocol during the pandemic period. Third, the microstructure of the three speeches depicts that Modi intended to provide a positive image in his speech therefore, the positive word is used in the speech. Thus, the ideology represented in the text is socialism.
