Abstract

This study is focused to analyze the advertisement for a beauty product called Wardah. The objectives of the study are to find out the signs that contained in Wardah’s “Feel the Beauty” campaign advertisement. To analyze the signs, the researcher uses the theory of semiotics from Charles Sanders Peirce. This theory is used because it helps to explain three types of sign content in the advertisement, which is icon, index, and symbol. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. The result of this study shows that the writer find out, from one advertisement that analysis, the writer finds out the three types of signs, such as icons, index and, symbols, the number of icons that has been found out in the advertisement is 6 (six) data, which all referring to the introduction of Wardah products that claimed can help enhance the confidence of women who use the product. The number of indexes in the advertisement is 4 (four) data, which all data referring to the confident beauty that can improve by using the Wardah product, the number of symbols in the advertisement is 5 (five) data.

Abstract

This research aims to find out what types of code switching are used and the reasons for using code switching by YouTuber Fathia Izzati in her conversations based on Hoffman's theory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, because the object of this research is taken from YouTube videos. To get data there are several steps taken, namely watching and listening to videos, making transcriptions of videos, select the utterances consisting of code switching. The main theory used to analyze the data focuses only on Hoffman's theory (1991) to analyze the types of code switching and the reasons for using code switching. The results of this analysis show that all types of code-switching are found in Fathia Izzati's utterances namely, Intra-sentential switching, Inter-sentential switching, and Tags-switching. The results of this analysis show that this study can find all types of code switching in Fathia Izzati's utterances. On the other hand, for the reasons for the use of code switching based on Hoffman's theory, the researcher found that of the 7 existing reasons, only 5 reasons for the use of code switching were found in the three selected Fathia Izzati videos, that is Talking about particular topic, be emphatic about something, Interjection, Repetition used for clarification, Clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. The purpose of using code switching has been explained in the YouTube Channel Fathia Izzati video.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the way abuse experienced by children characters in Matilda (1996) is represented. Using Qualitative-Interpretive method, this research analyzed the cinematic elements that helps accentuate details or information related to child abuse represented in the film and focuses only on the abuse experienced by the children characters. This research used Stuart Hall’s (1997) theory of Representation, Clark’s (2007) classification of Child Abuse, and Kuhn & Westwell’s (2020) theory of Film Style. The result of this research shows that mise-en-scene, shot, and angle, are the elements used in the film to represent child abuse. This research also reveals that the children characters in Matilda (1996) experienced neglect, physical abuse, and emotional abuse.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the signs of a toxic relationship in the novel "After We Collided" by Anna Todd and the negative impacts resulting from such toxicity. This research focuses on the two main characters, Tessa and Hardin’s complex relationship. Morgan Lee's theory of signs of toxic relationships was used to discover the signs of the toxic relationship in the narrative. The Interpretive-Qualitative approach is used to analyze this research. The novel's listed utterances and narrations served as the primary data source. The data was collected through reading and understanding the whole novel, then it was analyzed the according to the statement of problems and research questions. In analyzing the data, the conversations between the main characters and other characters were used to show the signs and the impact of a toxic romantic relationship between the main characters. The findings of this study reveal that the main character's relationship is afflicted by toxicity, which severely impact both characters' well-being.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to examine a number of animal-themed NBA team logos. The goal of this study is to decipher the significance behind the NBA team's animal logos. Charles Sander Peirce's semiotic theory, which is broken down into icons, indexes, and symbols, is the theory that the writer employs. The descriptive qualitative methodology is used in this study. Data was gathered from Google by checking up NBA team logos, searching for them, and then choosing the ones that exclusively have animal logos. According to the findings of this study, each animal logo utilized in the NBA team logos has a certain significance based on the traits of each team. The writer also discovered that the background colors of each NBA team logo have significance and are connected to the logos of the NBA teams that employ animal logos. Overall, there is a relationship between the animal depictions and the colors used in each NBA team's logo and the traits of each NBA team, such as identifying toughness, strength, courage, cohesion, agility, attack, defense, and tactics with the primary objective of defeating its opponent.
