Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential skill in language learning, particularly for students studying English as a foreign language (EFL). However, many students struggle with understanding narrative texts due to limited vocabulary and a lack of engagement with traditional teaching methods. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the Panda Adventure Game, an interactive educational game designed to enhance students' reading comprehension of narrative texts. The research follows a Research and Development (R&D) approach, employing a modified version of Sugiyono’s model, which includes stages such as data collection, design and development, expert validation, teacher and student feedback, evaluation, and final product publication. The game was tested in three junior high schools: SMPN 1 Sutojayan, SMPN 2 Sutojayan, and SMPN 2 Panggungrejo. The results from expert validation indicate high validity, with material experts rating it at 97% and media experts at 96%. Additionally, teacher and student feedback suggest positive engagement, with 94% of teachers and 83.7% of students responding favorably. These findings suggest that the Panda Adventure Game is an effective alternative learning medium for teaching narrative texts, making reading comprehension more interactive and engaging for students. Future research could explore its implementation in broader contexts and its impact on different language skills.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of literature-based reading instruction on students’ ability to identify cultural values in texts. Conducted with 17 second-semester students at Balitar Islamic University, it employed a one-group pre-test post-test design. Participants engaged in three learning sessions using varied literary genres (novels, comics, and storybooks). Statistical tests (Shapiro-Wilk, Levene’s, and paired-sample t-test) indicated significant improvement in post-test scores (p 0.05). The instruction enhanced cultural literacy and reading skills, notably in vocabulary acquisition, identifying main ideas, and recognizing supporting details. However, students showed limited progress in inferring moral lessons or implied meanings. These findings highlight the pedagogical value of integrating literature into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs to promote intercultural awareness and responsive reading in higher education.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini mengeksplorasi dampak pembelajaran membaca berbasis sastra terhadap kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mengenali nilai budaya dalam teks.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the implementation of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in teaching listening skills to 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Sutojayan, Indonesia. Employing observations and interviews, the research explores the effectiveness of GBA in a practical classroom setting. Findings indicate that while GBA provides a sound theoretical framework, its success hinges on comprehensive preparatory activities, particularly pre-listening tasks that build vocabulary and contextual understanding. The study highlights the need for differentiated instruction to address varying student proficiency levels and recommends targeted pre- and post-listening activities to boost comprehension and engagement. The outcome of this research is a framework for teaching listening using the Genre-Based Approach. This framework can serve as a guide for applying the same method in other schools. Overall, the research underscores the potential of GBA in enhancing listening skills, suggesting that its effectiveness can be significantly amplified through meticulous implementation and support. Future research should investigate additional strategies to further tailor GBA to diverse student needs and promote overall engagement in listening

Abstract

Literacy is crucial for learning because it helps students understand and work with written materials, but many students today have difficulties with reading, which affects their overall school performance. This study explores the effectiveness of the GEMOY (Gleaming English Game for Youth) in enhancing literacy skills among secondary EFL students of SMPN 2 Dongko Trenggalek. Utilizing a quantitative approach, responses were collected from 25 students who engaged with the GEMOY game as part of their learning process. Data were collected through closed-ended interviews with a Likert scale to assess students' responses to the game's effectiveness in improving their literacy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the overall trend in students' perceptions of the GEMOY game. Secondary EFL students reported an average score of 4.20 for understanding English texts, 4.40 for effectiveness in expanding vocabulary, 4.10 for effectiveness in helping students identify main ideas, and 4.00 for improving sentence writing. These results indicate that GEMOY effectively enhances literacy development by providing an engaging and interactive learning experience. The study highlights the potential of educational games to address gaps in traditional literacy instruction methods and offers valuable insights into integrating game-based learning. The findings suggest that incorporating GEMOY into English language teaching can significantly benefit EFL students by making literacy instruction more dynamic and effective.
