AN ANALYSIS OF CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE STRATEGY IN A DRAMA “THE BEAR” BY ANTON CHEKHOVAND ITS APPLICATION IN ELT Suryadi, Hendra; Muslim, Muslim

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding analysis of conversational implicature in a drama ?the bear? by Anton Chekhov and its application in English language teaching". This research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is a script of drama, The sampling technique used was purposive for the sample is chosen based on a certain purpose to reach the objective of this research. The data analyzed based on the theory?s Grace (1975), Yule (2005), Levinson (1992), Jacob L. Mey (1998) and Paltridge (2000). And then each Extract was analyzed based on Types and functions of conversational implicature. After that, the real data are displayed using table and particular. Here, the researcher analyzed several applications of conversational implicature in drama. In analyzing the data the researcher finds the idea from the drama that can be used for improving speaking the students in English language teaching. Based on the analysis, the outcome of this study indicated that all Grice?s proposed conversational implicatures applied to the drama entitled ?The Bear?. 28 utterances are consisting of 9 types of generalized conversational implicature, 5 types of particularized conversational implicature, 2 functions of self-protections, 6 functions of power and politeness, 3 functions of giving information, 1 function of entertain the audience and 2 functions of lack specific information. The study was enriching the knowledge of conversational implicature for the teachers and students who should be able to improve speaking skill in teaching-learning activity.

Abstract

There are 13 types of texts in English, but English teachers rarely teach spoof texts because most teachers are more focused on descriptive text, procedure text, etc. So, students' understanding of spoof texts was very low, even most students don’t know what the spoof text is, and they are not accustomed to producing texts. The Problem Based Learning approach was chosen to make it easier for teachers to help students produce texts. Therefore, this present study aims to analyze students’ abilities in producing spoof texts by using a problem-based learning approach. This research used qualitative descriptive and selected class XI students as a sample of this research. Data collection in this study used the following instruments: observation, interviews, and questionnaires to analyze the data in descriptive qualitative form. Based on the results, this study can conclude that the level of students’ ability to produce spoof texts after applying the Problem Based Learning Approach at the post-test is a complete category. It was proved that an average score of 73.9 and the highest score of 86. The percentage test of students' completeness was 78%, i.e., 14 of 22 students are included in the complete category. In comparison, 22% are not included in the complete category, meaning that students still need improvement.

Abstract

According to the school-based curriculum (K-13) there are several types of texts that students study. Descriptive text is one of the texts that must be mastered by students. Descriptive text is a general text that students already know, but most students are still confused when they want to describe something. Writing is an important skill, but in reality there are still many students who have difficulty writing a sentence and making it into a perfect paragraph. This study aims to improve students' writing skills in descriptive texts by using Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) strategies in class XI SMA. The use of Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) strategy is an effort that is needed to improve students' learning abilities, especially to improve students' writing skills. Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) is a strategy that can help students understand the concept of writing to develop students' thinking skills. Using this type of descriptive qualitative research and as a sample the students of class XI SMAN 1 Batukliang were selected. Data collection in this study used the following instruments: observation, interviews and questionnaires to analyze the data in descriptive qualitative form. More specifically, this research is expected to be able to describe (1.) whether the teacher is able to implement or not teach descriptive text writing skills using the TAW strategy; (2) how teachers implement TAW strategies in learning; (3) Students' understanding in producing descriptive text using TAW strategy. This research is planned for 1 year, while the mandatory output target of this research is to publish articles in accredited national journals ranked 1-6. This research is at TKT 2. This research is expected to be a window for further studies or references to explore the potential benefits and challenges of the Think-Ahead And Write (TAW) strategy itself in learning to write descriptive texts, especially for secondary education (SMA).

Abstract

The objective of this research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of peer reviewing in improving the students’ writing ability in recount text.   The method of the research was quasi-experimental design with control and experimental group and post-test only. The population of this research was the entire eight grade students of SMPN 1 Pringgarata. The cluster random sampling was used in the sampling technique. There were two classes of eight grade students as the sample of this research. They were VIII A that consists of 32 students as the control class and VIII B that consists of 30 students as the experimental class. Test and questionnaire were the instruments of this research. The data collected from the tests were analyzed by using independent sample t test and MANOVA through SPSS.   Results show that the independent sample t-test was 0.001 for motivation and 0.000 for the writing ability. Moreover, the result of MANOVA test was 0.000. The results were consulted to the score of the significant value generated Sig. (Pvalue) < α = 0.05. Thus, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. In other words, the result of the study revealed that peer review gave significant effect to the students’ wriying ability in recount text. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect to the students’ writing ability who taught using peer review.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini berjudul Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris Dengan Metode Integrated Skill Bagi Santri Pondok Pesantren Raudatuttholibin NW Paokmotong Kecamatan Masbagik. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah membantu para siswa yang kesulitan dalam berbahasa inggris dengan menggunakan metode Integrated Skill. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan ini dengancara memberikan pelatihan kepada para santri dalam mengintegrasikan kemampuan bahasa inggris. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah para santri pondok pesantren menunjukan adanya peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang cukup signifikan setelah mendapatkan pelatihan dan pendampingan. Peningkatan ketrampilan tersebut meliputi, membaca, membuat kalimat sederhana, dan berbicarapara selain itu para siswa sedikit demi sedikit lebih berani untuk mencoba berbicara di depan kelas. Hal ini menjadi pemicu peserta yang lain untuk melakukan hal serupa. Sehingga suasana kelas menjadi lebih interaktif dan aktif.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the main purposes of language learning in that it is an ability to transfer some ideas to other people clearly and correctly. In other words, he or she can communicate his or her ideas well to other people. As speaking dominates all activities in the English subject, the language components, namely pronunciation, fluency and vocabulary should also be learnt to support the language skills.  Based on the English teacher interview result that small group discussion have never been used by the teachers, speaking skill on the eighth grade students of junior high school of SMP Darul Muhajirin, so it was necessary to conduct a research in this school. The research design was quasi experimental. It began from conducting homogeneity test, deciding the experimental class and the control class, giving activities to the control class using the common technique and material usually applied by the English teacher and treatments to the experimental class that was using small group discussion in teaching speaking, then giving the same post-test to both classes, and the last analyzing the results of the post-test by using t-test. The result of this research The analysis of the post test results showed that there was a significant effect of using small group discussion that of speaking skill the experimental class got higher mean score than the control class (65, 1>57, 5) of the students’ speaking skill. Then, the result of data analysis using SPSS showed that the t-test value (2-tailed) 0.000, was less than 0.05.is expected to provide useful information for the English teacher to use interesting materials, that is, small group discussion in the English teaching learning process, especially in teaching speaking, since the small group discussion have never been used at SMPN Darul Muhajirin.

Abstract

The importance of soft skills for the younger generation is the basis for the preparation of this Community Partnership Program (PKM). The focus of this community service activity is to increase the interest in learning English for the people in highlanders based on environmental/nature folklore books and to increase the soft skills of Karang Taruna partners in Pemepek Village, Pringgarata District. The specific objective of this PKM is to increase interest in learning and improve English skills (soft skills). Some of the methods used in the Community Partnership Program (PKM) are question and answer and discussion methods to identify knowledge and supporting technology. The lecture method is used during the learning process and theoretical understanding of English. The results of community service that has been trained show that learning English based on nature-themed storybooks is easier to understand by the students being taught. By using this method, there is a pretty good increase for students. Apart from that, other results obtained were that youth and children absorbed English learning material more quickly and this activity was also a starting point for other activities.

Abstract

In the current era, English has become an essential language to master, prompting many people to compete to acquire proficiency. This community service activity aims to support the enhancement of students' English daily communication skills as part of the flagship foreign language program for students at the Barokatul Walidain Pijot Islamic Boarding School. The implementation of this activity began with an introductory socialization session. Subsequently, the community service activities were conducted in the form of training using three methods: lectures, discussions, and practice. Evaluation results from the beginning to the end of the program demonstrated significant improvement. The materials provided in this activity highly motivated participating students to learn English. The students were enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed participating in all the activities of the community service program conducted by the team.

Abstract

Kemampuan menulis akademik mahasiswa sering kali menghadapi tantangan dalam penggunaan struktur kalimat kompleks yang efektif, yang penting untuk berpikir kritis dan penyusunan argumen yang kuat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas latihan intensif pada struktur kalimat kompleks dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis akademik. Metode penelitian melibatkan desain eksperimen dengan kelompok perlakuan dan dua kelompok kontrol, menggunakan mahasiswa semester 7 di Institut Pendidikan Nusantara Global sebagai populasi. Data dianalisis menggunakan ANOVA dan uji post hoc LSD untuk membandingkan perbedaan antara kelompok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan antara kelompok perlakuan (M = 75.6, SD = 5.2) dengan kelompok kontrol positif (M = 68.9, SD = 4.8) dan kontrol negatif (M = 67.2, SD = 6.1), dengan F(2,26) = 65.14, p = 0.021, η² = 0.95. Analisis post hoc mengonfirmasi bahwa perbedaan tersebut signifikan pada tingkat p < 0.001. Temuan ini mendukung bahwa latihan terfokus pada elemen struktur kalimat kompleks memiliki efek besar dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis akademik. Implikasi dari penelitian ini mencakup pengintegrasian latihan semacam ini dalam kurikulum pengajaran untuk mengoptimalkan pembelajaran menulis, serta penggunaan teknologi pendidikan yang dapat memperluas akses dan efektivitas pembelajaran. Penelitian ini juga menyoroti perlunya studi lanjutan dengan populasi yang lebih beragam dan periode observasi yang lebih panjang untuk memperkuat validitas hasil dan mengeksplorasi dampak jangka panjang dari metode ini.
