Abstract

Abstract

Increasing the capacity of Posyandu Cadres is needed in order to meet the target of 80% exclusive breastfeeding nationally. Exclusive breastfeeding is expected to be able to reduce the number of stunting which continues to increase in West Sulawesi Province, especially in Bababulo Village, Pamboang District. The role of Posyandu cadres in increasing the understanding of pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers about fulfilling exclusive breastfeeding and optimizing the government's program, namely exclusive breastfeeding. The purpose of this training activity is to increase knowledge and empower posyandu cadres in Exclusive Lactation and Breastfeeding Management. The method used in the activity is pretest, training, counseling and post test. This community service activity was carried out with partners from the Babaulo Village Health Center, Pamboang District. The activity participants were all Posyandu cadres in Bababulo Village, namely 25 people. The implementation of this activity was carried out for 3 days from 21-23 July 2023. Abstract

The problem of organic waste remains a challenge on the campus of Universitas Sulawesi Barat, primarily because of the increasing activity of campus residents and the suboptimal awareness of sorting and managing organic waste. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of campus residents in making and using a simple composter to support sustainable organic waste management. The activity methods included socialization, demonstrations, direct practice, and evaluation. The participants in the activity included students, lecturers, and elements of campus leadership/staff. The material provided covered the importance of organic waste management, the potential for utilizing waste into compost and liquid organic fertilizer (LOF), and the stages of making a simple composter. The results of the activity showed that participants were actively involved in discussions and practices and were able to understand the basic stages of making a simple composter. After the activity was conducted, several academic communities at Universitas Sulawesi Barat began using simple composters, including the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Integrated Laboratory UPA, the Forestry Laboratory, and direct use practices at the homes of several lecturers. Although the activity has not yet reached the implementation of organic waste processing on a large scale, the existence of the simple composter has the potential to support the reduction of organic waste volume and encourage environmentally friendly behavior on campus.

Abstract

Background: Stunting remains a major public health problem and reflects chronic undernutrition that impairs children's physical growth and development. Appropriate complementary feeding (MP-ASI) is essential for meeting the nutritional requirements of children during the critical growth period and may influence stunting status. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between the type of complementary feeding (MP-ASI) and stunting status among children aged 24-59 months in Bonde Village, Pamboang District. Methods: A quantitative analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 92 mothers with children aged 24-59 months. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. The association between MP-ASI type and stunting status was analyzed using the Chi-square test, and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: Of the 92 children included in the study, 52 (56.5%) were classified as stunted. Local MP-ASI was the most frequently reported type of complementary feeding (44.6%). A statistically significant association was found between MP-ASI type and stunting status (p < 0.001). Compared with children receiving local MP-ASI, higher odds of stunting were observed among children receiving manufactured MP-ASI (OR = 6.22; 95% CI: 2.28-16.98) and a combination of local and manufactured MP-ASI (OR = 9.33; 95% CI: 2.26-38.51). Conclusion: A significant association was identified between the type of complementary feeding (MP-ASI) and stunting status among children aged 24-59 months in Bonde Village, Pamboang District. Given the cross-sectional nature of the study, the findings should be interpreted as associations rather than causal relationships. Further studies incorporating potential confounding factors are recommended to better understand the relationship between complementary feeding practices and child growth outcomes.
