Abstract

Popular song lyrics often function as cultural texts that express emotional experiences while simultaneously reflecting broader social meanings. One example is “Tabola Bale,” a widely circulated song that combines Indonesian and Eastern Indonesian linguistic expressions in narrating romantic relationships. This study examines how the lyrics construct meanings of cultural communication through a semiotic analysis. The research employs a qualitative interpretive approach with a single-case design by treating the song lyrics as a cultural text analyzed using Roland Barthes’ three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings show that at the denotative level the lyrics represent emotional experiences such as attraction, emotional unease, and expectations within romantic relationships. At the connotative level, expressions such as tabola bale, hati susah, and mete associate love with persistent emotional intensity and deep affective attachment. At the mythic level, these recurring signs construct an ideological narrative in which emotional restlessness is framed as evidence of sincere love, while marriage is positioned as the ideal orientation of romantic relationships. As a single-case interpretive study, the findings demonstrate how a popular song lyric can construct cultural meanings of love, gender relations, and relational commitment through symbolic representation.

Abstract

This study analysed the role of WhatsApp in mobilising environmental activist communities in the Ciputat Subdistrict, South Tangerang. WhatsApp has become the primary communication platform for disseminating information, coordinating activities, and fostering community engagement. This research employs a qualitative approach using netnography. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 13 informants, comprising community leaders, members, and government representatives, as well as participant observation within the community’s WhatsApp group over a three-month period, from May to July 2024. The findings indicate that WhatsApp is effective for the rapid dissemination of critical information, such as environmental clean-up schedules, illegal dumping alerts, policy updates, and educational materials on waste management. WhatsApp also facilitates open discussions by providing a space for members to share opinions, personal experiences, and collaboratively develop action plans through group chats, multimedia sharing, and polls. However, several challenges were identified, including information overload, limited responsiveness from some members, constraints in facilitating in-depth discussions, and technical barriers such as unstable internet connectivity. Despite these obstacles, WhatsApp plays a significant role in strengthening social bonds among community members and fostering collaboration with local government authorities. This study concludes that WhatsApp can serve as an effective tool to support environmental movements at both local and national levels. Its effectiveness could be further enhanced by integrating other communication platforms to meet their existing limitations.

Abstract

Reog Ponorogo faces preservation challenges in the digital era, especially among the younger generation. This study aims to examine the role of social media exposure and cultural knowledge in shaping public interest in Reog Ponorogo culture. This quantitative explanatory research surveyed 100 respondents aged 15-25 years in Tangerang Regency using an online questionnaire. The collected data were specifically analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The test results prove that social media exposure and cultural knowledge, both partially and simultaneously, have a positive and significant effect on public interest. The coefficient of determination analysis confirms that the integration of these two variables explains 53.6% of the variance in public interest in preserving Reog Ponorogo. In conclusion, digital exposure and cultural understanding positively predict public interest. This study recommends regular socialization regarding healthy social media usage and cultural education as a strategic effort to preserve Indonesian culture.
