Abstract

Subtitling has become a vital tool for disseminating ideas and information through online video. This study takes a deep dive into the translation strategies employed in the subtitling of the acclaimed Netflix documentary series “Our Planet.” Drawing on Gottlieb's established theory of translation techniques for subtitling, this research analyses the subtitling approaches within the episodes of the series. The findings reveal that the transfer strategy presenting direct lexical translation is the dominant approach (71%) used by subtitlers. However, the analysis also uncovers nuanced applications of other strategies, such as expansion, paraphrasing, and condensation, which work in tandem to enhance the clarity and naturalness of the target language subtitles. By examining this rich dataset of documentary video subtitles, this study provides valuable insights into the complex decision-making processes of professional subtitlers especially those that is related to cross-cultural comprehensio. The results suggest that while transfer is the primary technique, subtitlers thoughtfully employ a mix of strategies to deliver an optimal viewing experience to multilingual audiences. This study offers a groundbreaking exploration of the intricacies involved in translating educational and informative video content for global distribution.

Abstract

This study examines the pre-service teachers' agentive projections toward innovation in online English Language Teaching (ELT) classes. Employing teacher agency theory, this instrumental case study views projections as agentive when they are informed by the students' ecological aspects (past and present), oriented to solve potential learning problems and improve learning outcomes. The study involved 84 pre-service teachers who were voluntarily asked to fill in a questionnaire, submit a lesson plan, and be interviewed. nVivo Pro was used to organize themes. The study indicates that the pre-service teachers, M=3.81, SD=.590, perceive that innovation in online ELT classes is closely related to the integration of information and technology. As a result, the students' agentive projections were also oriented to solve technology and internet-based obstacles, added with innovative learning methods. The research findings may become important insights for the development of English teaching and learning in order to provide more capital for pre-service teachers creating ELT innovation in the future.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This Community Service is motivated by the fact that the number of SBMPTN participants failing to pass from year to year continues to increase and the failure to pass is not solely due to the IQ factor. More than that, the failure to pass was also caused by the participants' lack of understanding of the SBMPTN system and pattern. The objectives of this service are more specifically: (1) to provide knowledge to participants about SBMPTN success strategies and strategies for dealing with SBMPTN questions; (2) to provide knowledge to participants about examples of successful SBMPTN strategies and strategies for dealing with SBMPTN questions; and (3) to train participants continuously in implementing these strategies. The material is delivered by the method of lecturing, question and answer, modeling and assignments / exercises to work on SBMPTN questions. The analysis of the results of the training showed that there was an increase in the readiness of students in facing the SBMPTN. This is evident from the following data. (1) The number of participants who took part in the activity was 44 students and all of them took part in the pretest with an average score of 55.57; (2) The average pre-test score of the participants is below the mastery standard. Of the 44 participants, only 7 participants completed or scored 85 (15.91%), the remaining 37 students did not complete; (3) The number of participants who took part in the posttest was 40 with a mean score of 85.38; (4) The participants' post-test scores have reached the expected completeness standards. In this case, 33 students (82.50%) completed, the remaining 7 students did not complete. In addition, the participants (class XII students from Central Lombok Regency) gave a positive response to the material given. This can be seen from their enthusiasm and active participation in the material and assignments given during the activity. In fact, all participants hoped that similar activities would be carried out in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

This thesis investigates the types and dominant errors made by tenth-grade students of MA Nurussalam Tetebatu in the academic year 2024/2025 when writing recount texts, specifically focusing on their use of the past tense. Writing is identified as a challenging skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in Indonesia, often leading to grammatical errors, particularly in recount texts which necessitate the use of past tense to retell events. The study categorized errors into four main types: omission, addition, misformation (selection), and misordering. Employing a descriptive quantitative research design, the research involved a sample of 62 students from classes X.2 and X.4, selected using cluster sampling from a total population of 130 tenth-grade students. Data was collected through a writing test where students composed a recount text titled "My Past Holiday". The analysis involved identifying, describing, and explaining the observed errors to understand their underlying causes, such as first language interference or a lack of conceptual understanding. The findings revealed that misformation was the most dominant error type, accounting for 53.85% of all errors. This research provides valuable insights into the persistent challenges students face in mastering English grammar, particularly past tense forms, and aims to serve as a foundation for improving teaching strategies for writing recount texts.
