Abstract

The spreading ummatan wasathan concept has always been challenged by the existence of radicalism, terrorism, and intolerance among Indonesian citizens. The topic of ummatan wasathan (QS. Al-Baqarah: 143) was chosen not only as an effort to reduce exclusive actions but also to make it a Muslim character in Indonesia. The problem of this study is how is the contextual understanding of ummatan wasathan as a Muslim character from Ma'na cum Maghza approach? What is the significance of being an ummatan wasathan from Ma'na cum Maghza approach in religion and state in Indonesia? This study uses Ma'na cum Maghza by Sahiron Syamsuddin to uncover the significance of being a ummatan wasathan in Indonesia. This study is library research with a descriptive-analytical method that is reviewed qualitatively. Finally, this study concludes that ma'na and maghza al-tarikhiyah of ummatan wasathan are understood as special or chosen Muslims with the criteria of believing in Allah SWT, being patient and trusting, fair, and upholding unity. Therefore, not all Muslims are ummatan wasathan. As maghza al-mutaharrik of this verse, being an ummatan wasathan signify carried out by Indonesian Muslims, so they can respect each other among citizens and religious communities, and uphold the motto of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, the foundation of the state, namely Pancasila, and safeguard Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI).

Abstract

This study examines the tradition of Qur'an interpretation by ulama of As'adiyah pesantren, focusing on Tafsir Al-Qur'an Al-Karim bi Al-Lughah Al-Buqisiyyah Juz Alif Lam Mim (1958) and Juz Amma (1974) by AGH. Muhammad Yunus Maratan, Tarjumah Al-Quran Al-Karim: Tarjumanna Akorang Malebbi 'e Mabbicara Ogi (1979) by AGH. Hamzah Manguluang, Tafsir Al-Munir (1980) by AGH. Daud Ismail, and Tafsere Akorang Mabbasa Ogi (1988) by AGH. Abdul Muin Yusuf. These sources are described and analyzed to find the function of tafsir for Lontara-Bugis-speaking pesantren ulama in South Sulawesi. From this, this article concludes that although different in presentation, the commentators made their books as a typical da'wah movement of As'adiyah pesantren, both to the pesantren community (santri) and the people of South Sulawesi. This movement supports As'adiyah's orientation as a pesantren that produces many preachers in South Sulawesi. Likewise, the authors of the tafsir have a high social role as ulama in Bugis society. In addition, the use of Lontara-Bugis is not only a language of communication between interpreters and readers, but also a safeguard for the dissemination of the identity and existence of the Bugis culture.

Abstract

This article will contextualize the teachings of Islam from Arabic to Indonesia by linking them to the Islam Nusantara. This article will also show the moderate Islamic style displayed by Islam Nusantara. As for analyzing, this paper uses a descriptive-analytical method using contextualization theory, namely the search for understanding of Islamic teachings by involving context, as a knife of analysis. Some of the research results achieved by this paper are the contextualization of Islamic teachings from Arabic to Indonesia that has been carried out since the early spread of Islam in Indonesian soil as practiced by Walisongo. The spread of Islam in Indonesia did not bring about Arabic discourse, but found Islamic teachings (God's message) that were spread in Arab society, then applied in the context of Indonesian society. Furthermore, Islam Nusantara always displays the true spirit of Islam, spreads Islam peacefully, is tolerant of the differences faced, and maintains a wushta (moderate) attitude in addressing life's problems.

Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon of Bugis tafsir, both written and oral, produced by the As'adiyah ulama during the Islamization of Eastern Indonesia. As’adiyah, the oldest pesantren in the region, played a crucial role in the dissemination and teaching of Islam. Within this process of Islamization, Bugis tafsir emerges as a significant subject of study, as tafsir was foundational to the establishment of this pesantren. This is exemplified by the Bugis tafsir Tafsir Surah Amma Bil-Lughah Al-Buqisiyyah by AGH. Muhammad As’ad Al-Bugisy, the founder of As’adiyah. Furthermore, Bugis tafsir has been developed in various forms by As'adiyah scholars, initiated by the early students of the pesantren’s founder. This article argues that local tafsir is not only part of the intellectual heritage of pesantren but also plays a vital role in shaping pesantren traditions. This study employs a phenomenological-historical approach, combining literature review and fieldwork. Its findings indicate that the production of Bugis tafsir is essential for the promotion and transmission of Islam in Eastern Indonesia through Qur'anic interpretation that engages with contemporary contexts. This role is particularly evident in three key aspects: (1) culturally rooted da'wah (religious outreach), (2) the preservation of intellectual and cultural heritage through interpretation, and (3) the safeguarding of the distinctiveness of pesantren and Bugis culture. These three primary functions highlight the importance of employing local languages in the process of Islamization through interpretation—especially within the cultural framework of the interpreter, particularly when the interpreter is a pesantren ulama.

Abstract

Although Indonesia is known for its religious diversity, numerous incidents of intolerance reveal that symbols and practices of tolerance have yet to be deeply rooted in the country's social fabric. the Terowongan Silaturahmi in this context, a connecting passage between the Istiqlal Mosque and the Jakarta Cathedral—stands out as a rare spatial phenomenon symbolizing interfaith harmony in an urban landscape. This study aims to examine the aesthetic and architectural dimensions of the tunnel and analyze public perceptions of it as a representation of pluralist values. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach supported by digital quantitative analysis, the study integrates architectural interpretation, literature review, and sentiment classification of 2,003 comments from 5 videos on the YouTube page using the IndoBERT model and word cloud visualization. The findings reveal that the tunnel is broadly perceived as a positive symbol of tolerance and national identity, though some resistance emerges from conservative groups. Therefore, the Terowongan Silaturahmi exempli-fies how architecture can function as a medium for dialogue and social education on interfaith coexistence within Indonesia's public spaces.

Abstract

This article aims to contextualize the hadith of Al-Bukhari's transmission number 5.559 about 'speaking the good or remain silent' through the Double Movement theory from Fazlu Rahman, which will then become the basis for a ban on the phenomenon of hate speech on social media. This departs from the reality of hate speech that is increasingly rampant, even though the act has been banned in the Circular Chief of Police number SE / 06 / X / 2005. After analyzing and analyzing the history of Al-Bukhari number 5559, this article concludes that the hadith is a response to the bad behavior experienced by Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Salam from his neighbor, one of which is mentioned in the hadith is not saying good, as an antonym of the word saying good. Behavior of not saying good here is also in line with the phenomenon of hate speech, especially entering the media era. The moral ideal of this tradition is as a command to say good, if it is unable or unwilling, it is better to be quiet, rather than doing hate speech. As for the threat of hate speech,, as the moral ideal of the hadith here, is not included as those who believe because they are not good or silent, but instead do hate speech.

Abstract

This article discusses the phenomenon of Al-Qur'an Singers (PQ) which is widely found in Makassar, South Sulawesi, especially as a functional reception of Al-Qur'an as well as a review of Islamic law on it. This article argues that reading Al-Qur'an is a performing phenomenon in order to influence others. As a consequence of the performance, reading Al-Qur'an is good or bad based on its motives and impact. In discussing PQ, this article uses a type of field research, with primary sources in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation, while secondary sources are obtained from various relevant literature on the topic of study. These data are presented using a descriptive-analytical method based on a qualitative approach. This article concludes that the PQ phenomenon cannot be separated from the socio-religious construction of Makassar Muslims towards Al-Qur'an, as their Holy Book. PQ appears and develops in spaces and contexts relevant to Al-Qur'an’s functioning to get rewards from street users. In this socio-religious construction, PQ becomes a job that cannot be judged in black and white, namely halal or haram, because PQ shows uncertain (fixed) motives and impacts.

Abstract

This article presents the formulation of the study of Nusantara interpretation by positioning the treasures of Nusantara ulama as different, distinctive and unique works, while at the same time making the study of it appreciative. This effort is based on the argument that the presence of the study of Nusantara interpretation is a means for scholars to learn from the works of Nusantara ulama, and therefore scholars (should) make the works of Nusantara ulama the basis for developing the scientific study of interpretation. For this reason, this article applies the paradigm of Nusantara Islam in analyzing the study of Nusantara interpretation, from which it reveals several important aspects of the treasures of Nusantara interpretation. These aspects include script-language, presentation of interpretation, methodology, meaning, and others. From here, this article reveals that by holding the principle of being different and appreciative, the formulation of the study of Nusantara interpretation here invites scholars to be more creative in reading the works of Nusantara ulama. A creative way of reading means not allowing oneself to be constrained by existing theories, methods or paradigms, but the researcher freely creates and demonstrates contributions to the treasury of Nusantara interpretation.

Abstract

This study examines the contestation of religious authority between As’adiyah, representing local traditional ulama, and Ustadz Firanda, representing the transnational Salafi da'wah movement, focusing on the case of Firanda's rejection in Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi. The central argument of this research is that strong religious authority is not solely derived from online popularity but is instead grounded in social legitimacy, contextual wisdom, and an established scholarly reputation for maintaining harmony within a culturally diverse Muslim society. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research draws upon a formal statement issued by the As’adiyah community. The findings reveal that the rejection of Firanda's da'wah was motivated not only by theological differences but also by efforts to preserve the continuity of local jurisprudence and the socio-cultural harmony of the Bugis community. Local religious authority, rooted in the legacy of the Shafi’i school and Bugis cultural values, demonstrates significant resilience against the expansion of purification-oriented transnational da'wah movements. This study underscores the importance of reactualizing local jurisprudence based on maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah to address the challenges posed by transnational da'wah, particularly in promoting the common good (maṣlaḥah) of the ummah and safeguarding local culture.
