Abstract

The achievement of English listening skills among students still requires serious attention, with many students finding these skills difficult due to various factors, including lack of practice and motivation. This study aims to measure students' level of motivation in learning English listening skills independently. The methodology used was a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design, involving 28 students from the English Education study program at Parepare State Islamic Institute. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of 11 statements using a Likert scale. The results showed that the majority of students were highly motivated in learning English listening skills independently, driven by their ability to set personal learning goals and access to a variety of engaging resources, including materials and media. Nonetheless, some students showed challenges in time management and lack of external support, which may hinder their motivation. These findings underscore the importance of creating a supportive learning environment and utilizing technology to improve students' motivation and learning outcomes in English listening skills.

Abstract

The English language plays a pivotal role in education, particularly in global contexts. It is utilised in various domains, including education, business, and diplomacy. Moreover, it can be integrated with Islamic studies, particularly Islamic moderation, which emphasises balance, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. This study addresses a research gap by investigating the impact of religious moderation on students' learning competence in speaking classes, a topic that has received limited attention in previous studies. This research aims to investigate students’ learning competence in religious moderation at the English Department of the Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Parepare. This research was conducted from March to June 2024. This mixed-method study combines qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding. Twenty students from the fifth semester participated, and data were collected through interviews and documentation. The findings indicate that religious moderation is effectively implemented in speaking classes through three stages: preparation (lecture planning with RPS), implementation (using materials from YouTube, podcasts, articles, and videos), and evaluation (role-playing videos to assess competence). The students' scores increased from 77.0 to 85.76, showing significant improvement. The study shows that integrating religious moderation in speaking classes enhances language competence, with positive students’ perceptions confirming it as an effective teaching strategy.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) in improving the English grammar mastery of third-year students. The study also investigates student responses and engagement in the learning process. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, involving 25 third-year students. The learning process utilized digital platforms such as Duolingo, Baamboozle, and Blooket as interactive grammar learning media. Data were collected through grammar tests, observation sheets, and field documentation. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ grammar mastery, with the average score increasing from 58.52% in Cycle I to 91.20% in Cycle II. In addition, students demonstrated very positive responses and increased engagement during the DGBL activities. The learning atmosphere became more dynamic, and students were more motivated to participate actively in class. The study concludes that Digital Game-Based Learning not only enhances grammar skills but also promotes positive attitudes and high engagement among students in a pesantren context.

Abstract

The low literacy rate and high school dropout rate in Ko'mara Village, Takalar Regency, are caused by limited access to education and family economic priorities that emphasize child labor over formal education. The EDULITERAKSI Corner Program was implemented as a comprehensive solution through the establishment of six literacy corners based on community needs, including child literacy, parenting, religious education, entrepreneurship, health, and women's empowerment. The implementation method adopted a Participatory Action Research approach that involved the community as active subjects in problem identification and solution implementation. The program lasted five months, involving 218 participants and forming 36 local literacy cadres through Training of Trainers. Success measurement used a mixed-method with pre-post test instruments, structured observation, and in-depth interviews. Results showed significant improvements across all indicators: basic literacy (35.3%), parenting understanding (42.6%), Qur'anic reading ability (35.3%), entrepreneurial skills (44.5%), health knowledge (43.4%), and digital literacy (45.1%). The program successfully established a formal literacy cadre institution with juridical legitimacy and produced SO'RI dodol economic products with a turnover of IDR 1,2 million in two months. In conclusion, a participatory approach based on community needs proves effective in improving literacy and economic empowerment of rural communities sustainably.

Abstract

This research examines students' perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), focusing on their views regarding its benefits and challenges. Conducted at the English Language Education Study Program, Tarbiyah Faculty, IAIN Parepare, this study involved 30 students selected through random sampling to ensure generalizability. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing structured interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to gather insights into students’ experiences with AI tools such as Elsa Speak, Duolingo, and Google Assistant. Data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring themes and key perspectives. The findings revealed that students perceive AI as both advantageous and limiting in their EFL learning journey. On the positive side, AI was seen as increasing motivation, boosting confidence in speaking, and providing practical opportunities for self-directed learning. However, students also expressed concerns regarding overreliance on AI tools, decreased creativity in language production, and AI's inability to adapt to individual learning styles and personalities. Additionally, some participants worried about AI’s potential impact on future job opportunities. The study concludes that while students generally view AI as a valuable aid in EFL learning, they recognize the need for a balanced approach. Educators and learners should integrate AI with traditional learning methods to enhance effectiveness while minimizing its limitations. Future research should further explore students' long-term perceptions of AI and its role in diverse EFL learning contexts.
