Abstract

Background: The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed global education, yet disparities in access persist, particularly in low-income and rural regions. Digital literacy—encompassing technical, critical, and ethical competencies—remains underdeveloped due to insufficient teacher training and infrastructural limitations. Research Objectives: This study aims to (1) assess the effectiveness of FOCIL in improving digital literacy, (2) evaluate its socio-cultural and infrastructural adaptability, and (3) identify key features that enhance learning outcomes in underserved communities. Research Method: A mixed-methods sequential exploratory design was employed, combining qualitative stakeholder interviews, observational studies, and document analysis, followed by quantitative usability and field trials. Research Findings: The FOCIL platform significantly enhanced literacy outcomes, with participants demonstrating greater progress than those using conventional methods. Learning modules that incorporated local wisdom, such as regional folktales, proved more engaging and achieved higher completion rates than generic materials. The platform’s low-bandwidth design effectively supported learners in rural areas, enabling continued access through offline mode. Interactive features, particularly discussion forums and gamification, played a central role in boosting engagement and reinforcing learning gains. Conclusion: FOCIL effectively bridges digital divides by aligning with socio-cultural contexts, overcoming infrastructural barriers, and employing evidence-based pedagogies. Challenges include server latency and the need for teacher training. Future iterations should integrate AI-driven feedback and expand partnerships for scalability. Novelty/Originality/Value:  This study contributes a validated Cultural-Technological Implementation Framework and an open-source, adaptive platform tailored for resource-constrained settings. It advances the discourse on equitable digital education by demonstrating how community-centric design and hybrid learning models can enhance literacy and inclusion.

Abstract

The use of technology in education tailors’ content and teaching methods to meet individual learning needs; however, significant challenges remain in its practical application. This study analyzes the implementation of adaptive technology in adult education and applies andragogical concepts in personalized, interactive, and problem-based learning. The research employed a quantitative survey with 249 respondents from various educational institutions and used Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to evaluate the relationship between adaptive technology and andragogical learning strategies. The results indicate that adaptive technology has a positive and significant impact on andragogical learning strategies. Indicators such as technology accessibility, personalized learning, interactivity, and system integration support problem-based learning, self-directed learning, continuous feedback and evaluation, and contextual learning. The high outer loadings values demonstrate the significant contribution of each indicator to their constructs, and an R Square value of 0.369 indicates that 36.9% of the variability in andragogical learning strategies can be explained by adaptive technology. Adaptive technology can improve the quality of adult education by providing a more personalized, independent and interactive learning experience. So adequate infrastructure and educator training are needed to realize the full potential of adaptive technology.

Abstract

This program aims to enhance the knowledge and understanding of inmates regarding HIV/AIDS while also reducing stigma and discrimination within the prison environment. This program is based on data indicating a higher prevalence of HIV among prisoners compared to the general population. The primary challenges faced include a lack of information and education about HIV/AIDS and limited access to healthcare services within the prison. The program’s methodology includes planning activities with clearly defined goals and targets, forming a working team, and developing educational materials. The program’s implementation involves an initial outreach phase, followed by an educational session consisting of lectures and interactive discussions. Monitoring and evaluation are conducted by collecting data and assessing the activities to measure the program’s effectiveness using interview with prisoner and checklist. A total of 25 participants, aged between 21 and 50 years, participated in this program. The results demonstrated active participation and enthusiasm from the inmates (100%), indicating the program’s success in bridging knowledge gaps and reducing stigma. This program has fostered a healthier, safer prison environment and better-prepared inmates for social reintegration with improved health knowledge. It is hoped that this program can serve as a model for other prisons in Indonesia in the efforts to prevent and combat HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

AbstractThe Bridging the Digital Gap program at SKB 33 Jakarta successfully enhanced urban community digital literacy through a participatory approach based on three pillars: digital ethics, anti-hoax competence, and social media literacy. This Participatory Action Research (PAR) involved 45 participants using interactive workshops, hoax verification simulations, digital ethics focus group discussions, and positive content agent role-plays. The results showed significant improvement in: (1) information verification skills (92% of participants mastered reverse image search), (2) privacy management (100% were able to set at least three security settings), and (3) understanding of digital ethics (increased by 73%). Behavioral transformation was evident from an 87% reduction in hoax dissemination and the formation of five independent monitoring groups at the neighborhood level (RT/RW). The program’s success was supported by: (1) the use of local case studies (e.g., Jakarta flood issues), (2) a humanistic approach led by Intan Purnama Dewi emphasizing the real impact of digital interactions, and (3) intergenerational collaboration through the involvement of university students as near-peer educators. Strategic recommendations include replicating the model in 37 other SKB/PKBM centers, integrating the “Bijak Medsos” (Wise Social Media) module into the equivalency education curriculum, and developing the “Jakarta Hoax Detective” app. These findings demonstrate that non-formal education spaces like SKB 33 can effectively serve as digital bridges to cultivate an urban society that is critical, ethical, and resilient in facing the challenges of the digital era.

This approach aims to enhance the capacity of tourism-aware communities through innovative strategies that integrate community involvement and participation to achieve empowerment goals within the social, economic, and cultural spheres. This initiative employs a participatory method, engaging local residents who are members of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) in the development of Sustainable Educational Tourism to promote the unique characteristics and tourism potential of Sukaharja Village. The training program is designed to improve community members’ skills in utilizing local potential and resources effectively. The primary objectives of this community engagement initiative are fourfold: First, to develop a sustainable, community-based tourism (CBT) model in Sukaharja Village through the implementation of the Green Tourism Action Plan. Second, to enhance the capacity of local communities in managing sustainable educational tourism, with a focused integration of social, economic, and cultural dimensions. Third, to strengthen community awareness regarding the critical importance of preserving environmental integrity and local cultural heritage as core assets for tourism development. Fourth, to foster multi-stakeholder collaboration—among government institutions, local communities, and private tourism entrepreneurs—in establishing a resilient and sustainable tourism ecosystem. This initiative adopts a Participatory Approach, positioning local communities not as passive beneficiaries but as active agents and co-creators in the planning, implementation, and governance of tourism activities. This approach is grounded in the core principles of the Green Tourism Action Plan, namely: environmental sustainability, green economic development, and environmentally conscious education directed toward both local residents and tourists. The Green Tourism Action Plan is a strategic framework that emphasizes sustainability in the utilization of natural and cultural resources. Its fundamental objective is to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of tourism while ensuring that tourism activities can be maintained over the long term without degrading local ecosystems.
