Abstract

This research is entitled " Symbolic Interactionism of the Main Character “Noah” in the Noah Movie: A Sociolinguistic Analysis." This study aims to analyze how the symbolic interactionism reflected of the main character “Noah” in the “Noah Movie by Darren Aronofsky (2014) by using George Harbert Mead’s theory (1937) the types of Symbolic Interactionism attaching symbols to object, actions, and interactions. The analysis method used refers to the sociolinguistic analysis by considering Blumer (1986) theory to explore the interpret meaning from their social interactions especially ‘Noah’ as the main character in the movie. Descriptive qualitative research is used in this study. Data obtained from the text of conversations between the main character and other characters that contain elements of symbolic interactionism. The results of this research show that there are 25 screenshots of the main character scenes in total as the data that has been collected from “Noah” movie. The findings provide deep insight into how the main character “Noah” reflects Symbolic Interactionism in various way such us personal appearance, verbal and nonverbal communication, self-concept, perceptions of others and role-taking. And from the 25 extracts obtained, the researcher also concludes that the use of symbolic interactionism on the main character focuses on object, person, and action, and especially how the final result is obtained and consists of presented meaning, language and thoughts from the symbolic interactionism of the main character. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of literature and how the reflected of Symbolic Interactionism of the main character in the movie literary works.Keywords: Symbolic Interactionism, Noah, Movie, Sociolinguistic

Abstract

This research is entitled “Imagery Development in Billie Eilish’s Selected Songs.” This study aims to analyse the types of imagery in Billie Eilish’s selected songs using theory of Perrine’s (2016) and convey the theme using theory of Mayer’s (1956). The analysis method used qualitative descriptive used refers to the figurative language approach by considering Rozakis’s (1995) theory to explore the kinds of imagery and convey the theme. The research data were obtained from kinds of imagery consisting of visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery, gustatory imagery, tactile imagery, kinaesthetic imagery, and organic imagery. The analysis also convey the theme from the different types consisting of repetition, transformation, variation, aesthetics, emotional and cognitive interaction. Abstract

Speaking is a way to communicate. Speaking can be done to express various opinion, such as praising someone, expressing thiughts, or even offending someone intentionally. Hate speech is also a delibrate offense to someone’s feelings. In hate speech, someone can be insulted, made fun of, or laughed at, which can create a bad impression on the listener. The purpose of this study is to categorize hate speech phrases and the strategies of those who write their hate expression. This research used qualitative method. Hate speech of (X) Twitter users towards two feoreign celebrities  was the subject of the study. The comments left on the @Popbase pages were the source of the research of the research data. The data set consist of comments containing hate speech. The data analysis technique used in this research involves used the Mondal et al. (2017) theory to identify types of hate speech and the Culpeper (1996) theory to explain the strategies of hate speech. The findings of this research are as follows: (1) there six types of hate speech found in this study with the most common types being behavior and physical and followed by race, sexual orientation, disabilities, and gender, and (2) there are 4 strategies used by X (Twitter) users, namely negative impoliteness, bald on record, positive impoliteness and sarcasm or mock politeness, ranked from highest to lowest frequency.
