Abstract

Tesis ini mengkaji penggunaan deiksis yang terjadi dalam novel John Green berjudul Looking for Alaska. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis deiksis yang ditemukan dalam novel John Green Mencari Alaska dan mendeskripsikan bagaimana deiksis tersebut digunakan dalam novel John Green Mencari Alaska. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan deiksis, teori, yaitu deiksis persona, deiksis temporal, deiksis spasial, deiksis wacana, dan deiksis sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Data penelitian ini adalah ujaran atau kalimat yang mengandung deiksis yang terdapat dalam novel Looking for Alaska karya John Green. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teori Levinson. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa ada lima jenis deiksis dalam novel John Green, yaitu deiksis persona, deiksis temporal, deiksis spasial, deiksis wacana, dan deiksis sosial. Deiksis persona yang ditemukan dalam kalimat dan ucapan dalam novel Looking for Alaska are I, us, me, you, your, we, my, him, her, she, he, they, them, their, our, self, diriku, dirinya, diri mereka sendiri, dan diri Anda sendiri. Deiksis spasial yang ditemukan dalam novel tuturan Looking for Alaska ada di sana-sini. Deiksis temporal yang ditemukan dalam tuturan dalam novel Mencari Alaska adalah sekarang, lalu, tahun lalu, malam itu, kemarin, hari ini, hingga malam, tadi malam, siang, pagi berikutnya, waktu berikutnya, besok, minggu lalu, dan hari berikutnya”. Deiksis wacana yang ditemukan dalam tuturan dalam novel Mencari Alaska adalah ini, itu, ini, dan itu. Kemudian, deiksis sosial yang ditemukan dalam tuturan dalam novel Looking for Alaska adalah Presiden Amerika. Analisis penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa deiksis yang digunakan dalam novel tersebut tidak memiliki acuan yang sama. Itu tergantung pada konteks dan situasi adegan dalam novel. Oleh karena itu, pembaca harus mengetahui konteks dan situasi novel agar dapat memahami rujukan kata-kata deitik. Semoga hasil penelitian ini dapat bermanfaat dalam memberikan pemahaman tentang teori deiksis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and meanings of idiomatic expressions. This study was designed in a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data of this research are short stories. The procedures used in analyzing the data are classifying, selecting. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are six types of idiomatic expressions, there are similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliches and fixed statements, the last is other languages. Also the readers to use this research as a guide in conducting relevant research to sharpen and enlarge their literal development by trying to understand the overall context of the short story.

Abstract

This thesis studies the use of deixis that occurred in John Green’s novel entitiled Looking for Alaska. The objectives of this research are classifying the types of deixis found in John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska and describing how the deixis use in John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska. In this research, the researcher used the deixis, theory, namely person deixis, temporal deixis, spatial deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. This study used qualitative methods with descriptive approach. The data of this research was the utterance or sentence containing deixis that occurred in John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theory of Levinson. The result of analysis shows that there are five types of deixis in John Green’s novel, they are person deixis, temporal deixis, spatial deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The person deixis found in sentence and utterance in novel Looking for Alaska are I, us, me, you, your, we, my, him, her, she, he, they, them, their, our, herself, myself, himself, themselves, and yourself. The spatial deixis found in the utterance novel Looking for Alaska are here and there. The temporal deixis found in the utterance in novel Looking for Alaska is now, then, last year, that evening, yesterday, today, to night, last night, the afternoon, next morning, next time, tomorrow, last week, and next day”. The discourse deixis found in utterance in novel Looking for Alaska is this, that, these, and those. Then, the social deixis found in utterance in novel Looking for Alaska is American President. the analysis of this research shows that the deixis used in the novel does not have the same reference. It depends on the context and situation of scene in the novel. Therefore, the readers must know the context and the situation of the novel in order to understand the reference of deitic words. Hopefully the findings of this study could be useful in providing understanding on deixis theory.

Abstract

Denotative meaning is the original meaning or a true meaning possessed by a lexeme. Connotation is related to value of the sense of people who use language, whether they fell happy, sad, repugnant and angry. The purposes of this research were to identify the types of connotative meaning in Kid laroi song lyrics and describe the meaning of denotative and connotative meaning in Kid laroi song lyric. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive method. The data was obtained from song lyrics of Kid laroy song lyrics. The data was collected by downloading Kid laroy selected songs, listening all of Kid laroy songs, finding the words, phrases or sentences which consists of denotative and connotative meanings, then analyzing the words, phrases and sentences which found out. The data was analyzed based on Miles et al theory. From the result, researcher found three types, they are (1) Positive Connotative 8 data in ten lyrics of kid laroi song (2) negative connotative 14 data in ten lyrics of kid laroy song. (3) Neutral connotative 1 data in ten lyrics of kid laroi song. Based on the result, it is concluded that, the researcher got are 23 connotative meaning, and 15 dennotative meaning there could be found is Kid Laroi album. Based on the conclusion, the researcher would give contribution for the college students especially at English department, than, lyrics of Kid laroi can be used as a material college students to broaden and develop their knowladge about denotative and connotative meaning and both of the types connotative meaning in the song lyrics. And also for the readers or the next researcher, the researcher suggested that, this research can be used as a conception and reference in conducting research related to denotative and connotative meaning.
