Abstract

Rhizobium spp can affect plant growth in non-legume crops directly by synthesis of phytostimulator and solubilization of inorganic phosphate. However, the ability of Rhizobium spp from legume and non-legume rhizosphere to trigger the growth of non-legume crops is different. This research aims to analyze the ability of Rhizobium spp isolates to produce IAA hormones and phosphate solvent and determine the response of maize with the application of Rhizobum spp from the legume and non-legume rhizosphere. This study was carried out in two stages, where the first stage at Bioscience Laboratory Politeknik Negeri Jember, while the second stage at Kaliurang field, Jember, Indonesia (altitude 146 m asl, temperature 21°C - 34°C, and soil type was incepstisol) from September 2022 to January 2023. The field experiment was arranged in a complete randomized design (crd) with the application of Rhizobium spp isolates from various rhizosphere as a treatment consisting of without Rhizobium spp (control), maize-rhizosphere isolate, rice-rhizosphere isolate, soybean-rhizosphere isolate, edamame-rhizosphere isolate, and peanut-rhizosphere isolate. Every treatment was replicated four times. The results showed that Rhizobium spp isolates from legume and non-legume rhizospheres can synthesize indole acetic acid and solubilize phosphate. This condition was indicated by the solubilized phosphate content in the planting medium, which was higher in the application of Rhizobium spp compared to the control. Inoculation of Rhizobium spp from several rhizospheres showed a significant effect on plant height, stem diameter, ear weight without husks, and ear dry weight compared to control. These bacteria are able to trigger the growth of maize through direct and indirect mechanisms. In addition, the plant height that was treated with maize-rhizosphere Rhizobium spp was better than rice. It is suspected that Rhizobium spp from the maize rhizosphere is more adaptable when applied to growing media for maize crops, so that it can increase plant height.

Abstract

Rhizobium spp. bacteria can associate with non-legume plants, such as sorghum. The potential for Rhizobium spp. in association with sorghum can be enhanced by adding organic materials like goat manure. This study aims to examine the influence of Rhizobium spp. The research was conducted using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two factors and three replications. The first factor included control treatment (without Rhizobium spp.), Rhizobium spp. from the rice root zone, Rhizobium spp. from the corn root zone, Rhizobium spp. from the edamame root zone, Rhizobium spp. from the soybean root zone, and Rhizobium spp. from the peanut root zone. The second factor was the dose of goat manure fertilizer, which consisted of 140 g/polybag, 210 g/polybag, and 280 g/polybag. The results showed an increase in root absorption capacity. Rhizobium spp. from the non-legume root zone had a significant effect compared to Rhizobium spp. from the legume root zone on plant height (210 cm), number of leaves (17), and stem diameter (34.17 mm). This is thought to be because Rhizobium spp. from the non-legume root zone adapts more easily to the sorghum root zone. Rhizobium spp. from the non-legume root zone (graminae) with 280 g of goat manure per polybag had a significant effect on stem diameter (34.17 mm).

Abstract

Rice cultivation activities at Tefa Beras Sehat Polije still depend on the use of inorganic fertilizers. The advantage of inorganic fertilizers is that they decompose faster so that nutrients are absorbed faster by plants (fast release). So that the use of inorganic fertilizers continues to be carried out by farmers. However, dependence on organic fertilizers causes fertilizers to become scarce and their prices to increase. The purpose of this activity is to provide training in making organic fertilizers to the TEFA Beras Sehat Community. This activity took place from September to November 2023. The results of this activity were an 85% increase in skills and knowledge of waste management into organic fertilizers, 20% of partners were aware of the importance of organic fertilizers in environmentally friendly cultivation and 50% of partners had the potential to optimize the use of waste around their homes to become organic fertilizers.

Abstract

The monoculture system commonly practiced by Indonesian farmers tends to reduce agroecosystem stability due to the higher risk of pest and disease. On the other hand, polyculture can provide a more diverse habitat that supports beneficial arthropods, including natural enemies. This study aimed to analyze the diversity of arthropods in various planting combinations of waxy maize and edamame with additional border plants of lemongrass and basil. The research was conducted from June to September 2024 in Kebonsari, Jember, East Java, using four treatments: (1) maize monoculture, (2) maize–edamame polyculture, (3) maize–edamame polyculture with lemongrass borders, and (4) maize–edamame polyculture with basil borders. Arthropod sampling was carried out using pitfall traps, yellow traps, and sweep nets, and data were analyzed using the diversity index (H'), evenness index (E), and dominance index (C). The results showed that the polyculture combined with aromatic plants as a border effectively enhanced the balance of beneficial arthropod communities. Polyculture with basil effective in increasing parasitoid abundance, while polyculture with lemongrass is more optimal in increasing predators and pollinators.
