Abstract

Introduction: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is the most common kidney disease in children. Histopathological features classify the disease into minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) and non-minimal change nephrotic syndrome (NMCNS). Clinical and laboratory characteristics are considered to be useful in estimating the underlying pathological changes. This study aimed to assess the spectrum of clinical and laboratory profiles in children suffering from MCNS and NMCNS. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using medical records of patients hospitalized at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Central General Hospital and Hasanuddin University Teaching Hospital from January 2016 to August 2018. Subjects were classified into MCNS and NMCNS groups and evaluated for age, sex, hypertension, degree of edema, degree of hematuria, proteinuria level, cholesterol level, albumin level, urea level, and creatinine level. Data were analyzed by using chi-square, fisher's exact test Mann Whitney analysis, multivariate by logistic multiple regression analysis, and diagnostic test. Results: Of the 36 subjects enrolled, 10 (27.8%) had MCNS, and 26 (72.2%) had NMCNS. Bivariate analysis showed significant differences in hypertension (p=0.020; OR=12.3; 95% CI 1.35-111.61) and hematuria (p=0.018; OR=7.7 ; 95% CI 1.52-39.75). Multivariate analysis indicated that only hematuria is a significant predictor (p=0.014; OR=7.778; 95% CI 1.522 – 39.754). The diagnostic test of NMCNS showed hematuria sensitivity at 77% and specificity at 70% with a positive predictive value of 87% and a negative predictive value of 46%. Conclusion: Our study showed that hematuria is a sensitive predictor of NMCNS.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Stunting remains a major nutritional problem in Indonesia, affecting not only children’s physical growth but also cognitive development, academic performance, susceptibility to degenerative diseases, and future productivity. Addressing stunting is therefore essential to improve human resources quality. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between history of infectious diseases and immunization status with the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 24–59 months at Tamalate Health Center, Makassar City, in 2024. Methods: This was a quantitative study using an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional design. A total of 68 stunted toddlers were included using purposive sampling. Data collected covered age, sex, nutritional status, history of acute respiratory infections (ARI), diarrhea, and immunization status. Results: Most stunted toddlers were aged 24–35 months (41.2%), female (51.5%), short stature (83.8%), had a history of ARI (58.8%), no history of diarrhea (83.8%), and incomplete immunization (54.6%). Statistical analysis showed no significant association between history of ARI (p=0.174), diarrhea (p=0.124), or immunization status (p=0.096) and stunting incidence. Conclusion: History of infectious diseases and immunization status were not significantly related to stunting incidence in toddlers aged 24–59 months at Tamalate Health Center, Makassar

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional condition resulting from a lack of nutritional intake from food that is not in accordance with nutritional needs based on the body length index for age, which results in less than optimal motor development. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between stunting and the motor development of children aged 2-5 years at the Tamalate Community Health Center. The type of research is descriptive analytical research with a cross sectional research design. The sampling technique for the non-probability sampling method is Accidental Sampling. This study used 34 respondents as samples who met the inclusion criteria. This research instrument uses a microtoise stature meter for the stunting variable and the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) for the motor development variable. The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents who experienced stunting were aged 24-36 months, with the same number of males and females, while non-stunted respondents were aged 37-48 months with the majority being male. The majority of stunting figures are short stature, 79.4% of children aged 2-5 years in the working area of the Tamalate Community Health Center. The description of motor development shows that the majority of respondents have normal motor function, however, 13.23% of stunted children are found to be suspected of having motor disorders, while only 4.41% of non-stunting children are found. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between stunting and the motor development of children aged 2-5 years in the working area of the Tamalate Community Health Center.
