Abstract

Tension-type headache (TTH) is one of the most common types of primary headaches experienced by all age groups worldwide. The incidence of TTH among the medical students was also high. This study aimed to identify the relationship between anxiety and the incidence among medical students. We used an analytical descriptive research design and a cross-sectional study approach. A total of 119 students from Prima Indonesia University Faculty of Medicine participated in this study. Data were collected using the Back Anxiety Inventory (BAI) questionnaire to measure anxiety levels and Headache Screening Questionnaire (HSQ) to measure the incidence of TTH. The results of data analysis using the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between anxiety levels and the incidence of TTH (p = 0.026). This finding indicates that the higher a person's anxiety level, the more likely they are to experience TTH. Based on the results of the study, 84.87% (101 people) of the participants experienced TTH, while 15.13% (18 people) experienced possible TTH. The majority of the participants with high anxiety levels were female (94.4%). It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between anxiety and the incidence of TTH among Prima Indonesia University Faculty of Medicine students in 2023. This finding supports the hypothesis that anxiety is a risk factor of TTH.

Abstract

Gadget usage has become an integral part of the lives of students in the modern era, including Indonesia, where there has been a significant increase in gadget users. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the frequency of gadget use and the occurrence of headaches among medical students at Universitas Prima Indonesia in 2022. Using a quantitative descriptive approach and cross-sectional research design, this study analyzed the data collected through a questionnaire. Chi-square tests were used to examine the relationship between the independent variable, gadget usage, and the dependent variable, the occurrence of headaches. The results indicated that tension-type headaches were the most common type experienced by students, followed by migraines. However, some students reported cluster headaches, while others did not experience any headaches. The most significant finding was the strong correlation between the frequency and duration of gadget use and the increased risk of developing headaches. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing the negative health consequences of excessive gadget use, particularly among students. Therefore, there is a need for strategies to manage gadget usage wisely to prevent headaches that may disrupt academic performance and overall quality of life.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of the acute toxicity test of white turmeric extract (Curcuma zedoaria) on the brain organ. This research is experimental research with a Post Test Only Control Group Design. This research was conducted at the Pharmacy and Histology Laboratory. Faculty of Medicine. University of North Sumatra. The research was carried out from January to March 2023. The population in this research involved male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The results of the acute toxicity test of white turmeric extract for 14 days showed no signs of toxicity or death in rats given the smallest to largest doses, resulting in an apparent LD50 value of white turmeric extract is >2 g/kgBW, and is classified in the practically non-toxic category. Rats that received white turmeric extract showed movement or activity, appearing more energetic by the end of the second week with increasing doses. Histopathological examination of the brain in the acute toxicity test revealed minimal changes, such as edema and congestion in line with increasing doses.

Abstract

Wound healing is a complex biological process involving cellular and tissue responses, including fibroblast formation and wound diameter closure. Berastagi orange peel extract (Citrus sinensis L.) contains flavonoids, tannins, and vitamin C, which play roles in anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and collagen-stimulating processes, thus potentially accelerating wound healing. This study aimed to determine the effect of topical administration of Berastagi orange peel extract (Citrus sinensis L.) on the healing of incised wounds in rats based on fibroblast count and wound diameter. This research employed a quantitative analytic true experimental design with a post-test group design. Rats were divided into several treatment groups, namely gel base, 10% povidone iodine, and Berastagi orange peel extract gel (EEKJ) at concentrations of 40%, 60%, and 80%. The observed parameters were fibroblast count and wound diameter on day 0 and day 14. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Post Hoc tests. The results showed an increase in fibroblast count and a greater reduction in wound diameter in the groups treated with EEKJ gel compared to the gel base control group. Compared to 10% povidone iodine, EEKJ gel also showed relatively comparable effects in accelerating wound healing. The 60% concentration demonstrated more optimal results in stimulating fibroblast proliferation and reducing wound diameter, although statistically, the differences between concentrations were not significant (p > 0.05). Topical administration of Berastagi orange peel extract proved effective in accelerating the healing process of incised wounds by increasing fibroblast count and reducing wound diameter. The 60% concentration was the most optimal compared to other concentrations, although the differences were not statistically significant.

Abstract

Introduction: Cutaneous wounds in male rats (Rattus norvegicus) are widely used as models for wound-healing research. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory biomarker that increases in response to injury. Berastagi orange peel extract (Citrus sinensis L.) is known for its anti-inflammatory properties; however, its effectiveness in reducing serum CRP levels in cutaneous wounds has not been extensively studied. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of topically administered Berastagi orange peel extract on serum CRP levels in male rats with cutaneous wounds. Methods: A total of 25 male rats were divided into three groups: control, treatment with orange peel extract, and treatment with a standard ointment. Wounds were inflicted on the rats' backs, and treatments were administered for a few days. Serum CRP levels were measured using the ELISA method. Results: Results indicated that the group receiving Berastagi orange peel extract exhibited a significant reduction in CRP levels compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The standard ointment group also showed a reduction, but not as effectively as the orange peel extract. Conclusion: Berastagi orange peel extract significantly reduces serum C-reactive protein levels in male rats with cutaneous wounds. These findings support the use of natural extracts as alternatives in wound healing therapy.
