Abstract

This study examines the comparative economic efficiency and financial feasibility of irrigated and rainfed rice farming systems in Tilongkabila District, Bone Bolango Regency. The objective is to evaluate the cost structure, revenue, net income, and economic feasibility of switching between farming systems. Data were collected through a survey of 64 farmers, comprising 43 irrigated rice farmers selected via simple random sampling and 21 rainfed rice farmers selected via saturated sampling. The analysis reveals an interesting phenomenon: in terms of capital efficiency, rainfed rice farming is actually superior with an R/C Ratio of 1.59 compared to 1.48 for irrigated rice farming. However, in terms of nominal net income, irrigated rice farming yields significantly higher returns of IDR 3,907,744 per planting season, compared to rainfed rice farming which generates IDR 3,003,523. The Incremental B/C Ratio of 3.21 confirms that transitioning from rainfed to irrigated rice is economically feasible. These findings indicate that the higher nominal income of irrigated rice farming is not matched by its cost efficiency ratio. This study recommends the implementation of cost-saving technology interventions in irrigated rice farming to enhance efficiency, as well as irrigation infrastructure support for farmers currently dependent on rainfed rice farming.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the capacity of farmers through socialization and training in the production of Biosaka elicitors in Telaga Biru District, Gorontalo Regency. Biosaka is a natural elicitor produced by the manual crushing of healthy plants in pure water, not fertilizers, hormones, or enzymes, thereby triggering the plant's natural defense response and holistically improving soil health. The activity was carried out on April 26, 2024, at the local Agricultural Extension Center (BPP), involving a group of farmers selected based on their high dependence on synthetic chemical inputs. The methodology of the activity combined interactive lectures, reflective discussions, and hands-on training guided by agricultural extension workers. The results showed that all participants were able to correctly understand the concept of Biosaka and successfully produced the elicitor independently with consistent quality—characterized by visual features (no sedimentation, no foaming, thick and shiny appearance) and an increase in the average Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) value of 250–350 ppm. Beyond the technical aspects, this activity built collective awareness of the importance of reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and transitioning to sustainable agricultural practices based on local resources. By actively involving farmers and supported by local agricultural extension workers, this activity became the first step towards realizing more independent, environmentally friendly, and equitable agriculture in Telaga Biru District.

Abstract

Empowering the economic community of Suka Makmur Village, Bone Bolang District, is a strategic step in supporting local independence and achieving sustainable development. One potential natural resource with high economic value that has not been optimized is palm sap. The palm sugar artisan community has so far focused on traditional palm sugar production, which, although a local characteristic, has not provided significant added value. Given this situation, this community service activity was carried out to introduce and socialize the concept of palm sap-based product diversification, emphasizing the potential for developing liquid palm sugar and palm syrup as innovations that are more adaptive to modern market needs. The implementation method was carried out in a participatory manner through socialization and counseling, accompanied by group discussions to explore opportunities, challenges, and market potential for palm sap derivative products. The results of the activity showed an increase in community understanding of product diversification, awareness of the importance of hygienic processing, and a collaborative spirit to continue innovation at the village level. This activity not only provided new insights to the community but also generated initial data on the palm sap value chain and production capacity that can be used as a basis for developing further programs. Thus, this program plays a role in strengthening sustainable local agribusiness systems through community empowerment based on local natural resource potential.
