Abstract

In early 2020 a high mortality of pigs in Malacca Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province was confirmed as an ASF infection which then spread to all of Timor Island, Flores Island, and Sumba Island. One of the risk factors for the spread of ASF is swill feeding. The purpose of this study was to study the feed management practices of pig farmers during the ASF outbreak and to measure the relationship between feed management practices and the ASF outbreak in Kupang City. The study used a case-control study approach to study feed management practices for pig farmers during the outbreak and their relationship to ASF. A total of 69 farmers who had experienced the incidence of dead and sick pigs were taken as case samples and 21 farmers were randomly selected from around the area as controls. The data in this study were analyzed by descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis was used to measure the relationship between feed management practices and the incidence of ASF. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that swill feeding practice had a significant correlation with the incidence of ASF (P 0.038<0.05) with OR (2.94), while the factor of cooking or not cooking feed before being given to pigs was also significantly correlated with the incidence of ASF (P 0.003<0.05) with OR (0.1). In conclusion, based on epidemiological analysis, the factor of swill feeding practice that is not cooked is highly correlated with the incidence of ASF in Kupang City.

Abstract

For the people of East Nusa Tenggara, pigs do not only have economic value but also have social and cultural values. For this reason, it is necessary to perform a good farming management to keep the pigs free from diseases such as Hog cholera (HC). The aim of this study is to measure the association between pig farmers knowledge and attitude and practice regarding HC controlling in Kota Raja Sub-district, Kupang City. In this study, data was obtained by questionnaire and interview of pig farmers which was done in Kota Raja Sub-district from August until October 2018. Data was analyzed with chi square (χ2) analyses to measure the association between variables. The result of this study show that the knowledge variable is associated with attitude variable with P<0,05 (OR:6,3), but is not significantly associated with practice variable. The attitude variable is associated with practice variable with P<0,01 (OR:0,1). In conclusion, pig farmers in Kota Raja Sub-district need to improve practice regarding HC controlling by improvingnowledge about HC disease, which will improve farmers attitude toward HC controlling programs.

Abstract

Plastic waste in the ocean shows varying abundance at the surface, midwater, and sea floor. As plastic waste remains in the water for longer periods, it breaks down into smaller particels known as microplastic. This research aims to determine the presence, characteristic (shape and color), and abudance of microplastic in the gill and digestive tract organs of Indian scad (Decapterus russelli) and fringescale sardinella (Sardinella fimbriata) obtained from Oeba Fish Landing Base, Kupang City. The organs used were isolated with 10% KOH for 48-72 hours, and after disintegration, observations were made under a microscope. The results showed the presence of microplastics in both the Indian scad and fringescale sardinella. The microplastics found in the gills of the Indian scad included fibers and fragments in black, purple, and transparent colors, while in the digestive tract, fibers and fragments in black and transparent colors were found. The microplastics found in the gills of the fringescale sardinella included fibers and fragments in black, transparent, and green colors, while in the digestive tract, fibers, films, and fragments in black, transparent, and blue colors were found. The abundance of microplastics in the Indian scad was 0.9 particles/ind, consisting of 0.5 particles/ind in the gills and 0.4 particles/ind in the digestive tract. The abundance of microplastics in the fringescale sardinella was 1.4 particles/ind, consisting of 0.9 particles/ind in the gills and 0.5 particles/ind in the digestive tract

Abstract

The market is a public place that is used as a meeting place between sellers and buyers to conduct transactions. Traditional markets are markets that have not paid attention to health principles such as environmental sanitation. Poor sanitation plays a role in increasing the breeding of vectors such as rats. This study aims to measure the success rate of catching rats using roasted coconut, salted fish, and sweet potato bait, identify the types of rats that have been caught in the market, and analyze the relationship between the sanitation of the market and the success rate of catching rats and the level of rat density. This type of research is a descriptive study with market observation methods, collection of rat samples and identification of rat morphology. The total traps used in each market were 24 traps for 6 days at 8 points indicated by rats. At the Oeba market, rats prefer salted fish bait with a success rate of 25%, then roasted coconut with a success rate of 16% and sweet potatoes with a success rate of 2%. At the Oesapa market, rats preferred salted fish bait with a success rate of 29%, then roasted coconut with a success rate of 17% and sweet potatoes with a success rate of 3%. There are 5 types of rats and 1 type of shrew that have been caught, namely the house rat (Rattus tanezumi), the wirok rat (Bandicota indica), the rat rat (Rattus norvegicus), the bush rat or tree rat (Rattus tiomanicus), the field rat (Rattus exulans) and House shrew (Suncus murinus). Sanitation in the Oeba market and Oesapa market is included in the poor category so that the level of rat density in the Oeba market and Oesapa market is relatively high with percentages of 14% and 16% respectively.

Abstract

Infection by the parasitic worm Anisakis sp. can cause anisakiasis in humans and is an important food safety concern, particularly in mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis). This study aimed to identify the morphology of Anisakis sp. larvae in mackerel tuna obtained from the Fish Auction Center (TPI) in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Examination was conducted on internal organs (liver, intestine, and gonads), and the larvae found were observed using SEM. The results revealed the presence of Anisakis sp. larvae characterized by typical morphological features, including a boring tooth and papillae in the anterior part, as well as a mucron in the posterior part. These findings confirm Anisakis sp. infection in mackerel tuna and provide detailed morphological data useful for species identification and zoonosis prevention through marine fish quality monitoring.
