Abstract

This research entitled: "Comparative Study of Al-Azhar and Al-Mishbah Interpretations in the Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 153 Regarding the Concept of Patience" raises a comparative study of the interpretation of Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (Buya HAMKA) in the Tafsir Al-Azhar and Prof. Dr. M. Quraish Shihab, MA in the Tafsir Al-Mishbah. The selection of this topic is due to the inaccurate understanding of the Indonesian Muslim community regarding the need for patience. Researchers often find that the meaning of patience is equated with "enduring poverty and misfortune" or being 'forced' to accept misfortune. In this context, patience falls into the "passive" or "forced" realm. Examining several verses about patience, including the command of Allah SWT to ask for help with patience and prayer (QS Al-Baqarah: 153), the researcher believes this verse and other verses of patience should be understood as "active and productive patience." This article shows that patience is a very important moral or behavior for every Muslim to maintain their honor, dignity, and status as superior Muslims. Every Muslim must be patient in receiving blessings or trials in open or narrow, easy or challenging circumstances. Prof. Hamka and Prof. M. Quraish Shihab see the essence of patience as a person's ability to control emotions to control themselves in good or harmful situations. According to Buya Hamka, patience is a noble and enlightened attitude of the soul, which is achieved through self-control, steadfastness, and persistence in all trials and gratitude to God and holding fast to piety, while according to M. Quraish Shihab, patience is restraining oneself from the tumult of the heart to achieve something good through the holiness of God.

Abstract

Devotion to one's parents is a commendable character often referred to as Birrul Walidayn. Children's devotion to their parents will not always be commensurate with the sacrifices parents make for their children. Devotion to parents can be shown through good service, polite words, and devotion to both. In this era, we often see the phenomenon of children disobeying their parents, which, of course, is very contrary to what Allah SWT and the Prophet Muhammad commanded. This research aims to determine the interpretation of Birrul Walidain in QS Al-Isra [17] 23-24 according to Tafsir Al Azhar and Marah Labid, as well as compare the similarities and differences between the interpretation of Birrul Walidain between the two interpreters. This research is library research. The data sources used are primary and secondary data, primary data in the form of the Tafsir Al Azhar Book by Hamka, the Book of Tafsir Marah Labid by Syekh Muhammad Nawawi, and secondary data in the form of journals, theses, scientific articles, and books that support this discussion. The method used to analyze this writing is the muqaran method. Based on the data analysis, from the interpretation of QS Al Isra verse 24, Buya Hamka and Sheikh Muhammad Nawawi agree that a child must care for both parents patiently and sincerely, be humble towards them, and pray for them.

Abstract

The interpretation of the mutasyabihat verses in the Qur'an is a complex problem in Islamic studies. These verses have meanings that seem ambiguous or open to various interpretations. The interpretation of the Qur'an can vary greatly depending on the context. Some differences can arise in literal versus figurative understanding, historical context, and philosophical or theological approaches in interpreting this holy text, especially in interpreting the mutasyabihat verses related to the nature of Allah, which will be the focus of our discussion in this writing. The problem is that there are still many people who make an understanding that equates the nature of Allahﷻwith creatures (Tasybih). For example, some people think that Allah sits on the 'arsy, or in other words, Allah needs his creatures. This kind of understanding is wrong understanding and can even influence the understanding of Muslim society and affect our faith as Muslims, even though we know that equating Allah with his creatures is Haram. So this study tries to explore the interpretation of the mufassir figures, namely, Imam Asy Syaukani and Quraish Shihab. Especially the interpretation of the mutasyabihat verses related to the nature of Allah. Based on the description above, this study has several study focuses: 1) How do Imam As Syaukani and Quraish Shihab interpret the meaning of istiwa in the letter al-A'raf verse 54. 2) How do Imam As Syaukani and Quraish Shihab interpret the meaning of yad in the letter sad? 75. In this study, we use Qualitative research with library methods. This study's results explain that both have broad differences in interpreting the meaning of istiwa and yad. And each uses a different method of interpretation. 1) Imam Syaukani is of the opinion that Allah resides in an unknown way. Meanwhile, Quraish Shihab assumes that the meaning of istawa is the power of Allah. 2) Imam Syaukani interprets the meaning of yad to mean "without intermediaries." Quraish Shihab interprets the meaning of yad "as an indication of the special treatment and respect that humans receive from God.”

Abstract

Tolerance is an issue that holds its sensitivity and complexity. A misunderstanding or lack of awareness of the urgency of tolerance can be a detrimental trigger for conflict. Therefore, in the context of the existence of Muslims as the majority in this country, it is very important to explore the meaning of tolerance from the perspective of scholars. This research is based on Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tafsir Al-Quranul Majid, two works of Qur'an interpretation that greatly influence. Using a qualitative approach and literature method, this study aims to provide in-depth insight into the views of scholars regarding tolerance. The analysis results of the two interpretations indicate a common view in interpreting verses that contain a message of tolerance. Both interpretations agree that in the holy book of the Qur'an, there is a teaching that difference is a reality that is part of the will of Allah SWT. Furthermore, there is a message to uphold the teachings of Islam and invite people to Islam while still believing that there is no coercion in embracing religion. In other words, both recognize that the values of tolerance, as explained in the Qur'an, are the main foothold for realizing peaceful coexistence in a heterogeneous society. This study observes that a deep understanding of religious teachings can be a bridge to prevent the emergence of intolerance. Thus, further investigation into the context of tolerance from the scientific perspective of Islam contributes positively to strengthening the foundations of harmony and tolerance in the social life of mankind.

Abstract

Technological advances and the diversity of social media have become a trigger to see all the advantages that other people have, giving rise to feelings of being left behind and even blaming yourself for not having achieved what other people have achieved. This feeling arises because someone tends to compare themselves with other people, also known as social comparison, when viewing content on social media, such as Instagram. This research was written using the library research method, and data collection was obtained from various books, journals, and previous research. The research results show that being grateful and not belittling other people are commendable attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an Surah Ibrahim [14]: 34, Surah Saba [34]: 13, Surah al-Hujurat [49]: 11, dan Surah al-Ra’du [13]: 11, so these two attitudes can be used as solutions to avoid the negative effects of social comparison.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the meaning of the word wasaṭ and its various derivations in the Qur'ān. This word is closely related to an important theme that is highly relevant in people's lives, namely moderation. Moderation plays a key role in creating balance, harmony and tolerance at various levels, whether local, national or international. In order to comprehensively understand the concept of moderation, this study focuses on three main questions: what is the basic and relational meaning of the word wasaṭ, how has it developed historically, and how is the weltanschauung or worldview associated with the word wasaṭ reflected in the Qur'ān. This research is a literature study that collects data through the documentation method. The main sources used include the Qur'an, translations, tafsir, as well as various dictionaries to identify the meaning and derivation of the word wasaṭ. In the analysis, the author applies Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic theoretical framework, which includes three main aspects: (1) basic and relational meaning, (2) meaning in synchronic and diachronic contexts, and (3) weltanschauung or worldview related to the word. The basic meaning of the word و-س-ط is "middle". Relationally, through syntagmatic analysis, this word contains the meaning of justice, choice, excellence, best, and dominance, and refers to a just and superior figure. In paradigmatic analysis, the word wasaṭ has similar meanings with jānibun and qalbun, but contrasts with ḥaddun, shafā, ṭarafun, aṭrāfun, 'ażīmun, and karīmun.
