Abstract

This study explores how digital media enhances geography learning in Indonesian high schools, specifically focusing on SMA Swasta Budi Agung Medan. In the context of global advancements in educational technology, the integration of digital media in geography education has become increasingly relevant, particularly given the subject’s emphasis on spatial and visual understanding. This research aims to examine the role of digital media in supporting geography learning and to identify the challenges teachers face during its implementation. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, involving interviews with teachers, students, and school administrators at SMA Budi Agung Medan. The findings reveal that digital tools such as Quizizz, Wordwall, and Google Earth are actively used and have increased student motivation, engagement, and comprehension of complex geographical concepts. However, several challenges were identified, including limited access to digital devices among students, insufficient teacher readiness to integrate technology effectively, and difficulties maintaining classroom discipline during interactive sessions. The study concludes that while digital media significantly enriches geography learning, its success depends on improving infrastructure, providing continuous professional development for teachers, and adopting effective classroom management strategies. These findings offer valuable implications for policy development, teacher training programs, and curriculum planning to optimize the integration of digital media in geography education.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada dinamika ketegangan identitas etnik masyarakat Simalungun di Kota Pematang Siantar, sebuah kawasan yang dulunya merupakan wilayah adat mereka, namun kini lebih banyak dihuni oleh kelompok etnis lain seperti Jawa dan Batak Toba. Tujuan utama kajian ini adalah menggali pandangan komunitas Simalungun mengenai pengalaman marginalisasi budaya yang mereka alami, serta menelusuri faktor-faktor yang memicu konflik antar-etnik dan kemungkinan solusi yang dapat diterapkan. Pendekatan penelitian dilakukan melalui wawancara secara mendalam dengan sejumlah informan utama dan pendukung yang berasal dari latar belakang etnis dan profesi yang beragam. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ketidakseimbangan dalam representasi budaya di ruang publik, kurangnya partisipasi masyarakat Simalungun dalam struktur pemerintahan lokal, serta adanya stigma negatif terhadap kelompok ini menjadi penyebab utama timbulnya gesekan. Meskipun secara lahiriah hubungan antar-etnik terlihat rukun, banyak warga Simalungunkhususnya generasi muda merasa tersisih dan mengalami krisis identitas. Kesimpulan dari studi ini menekankan perlunya peran aktif pendidikan, pemberitaan media yang adil, serta dukungan kebijakan dari pemerintah guna menciptakan ruang keberagaman budaya yang lebih adil dan inklusif di wilayah tersebut

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the philosophical meanings contained in the Ketupat Eid tradition among the Javanese community in Dolok Malela Village. Ketupat Eid is a tradition held after the Idul Fitri celebration as a form of gratitude for successfully observing the fasting during the month of Ramadan. In this study, a qualitative approach using case study methods was employed to explore the cultural, religious, and social values behind the implementation of this tradition. The findings indicate that the Ketupat Eid tradition has deep symbolic meanings. Ketupat, as a symbol of the success in performing the fast, represents purity, peace, and togetherness. Furthermore, the process of making and presenting ketupat during this celebration embodies a philosophy about the relationship between humans and God, among fellow humans, and with nature. The people of Dolok Malela Village interpret this tradition as a means to strengthen the ties of friendship, build social solidarity, and revive the values of mutual cooperation in daily life. Ketupat Lebaran also functions as an effort to preserve the culture and identity of the Javanese community in the village. This tradition not only has a religious dimension but also contains social meanings that teach the importance of togetherness, tolerance, and care for one another. This research concludes that the Ketupat Lebaran tradition in Dolok Malela Village plays an important role in strengthening the social and cultural structure of the community while also teaching life values that are relevant to the challenges of the times.

Abstract

This research examines the application of digital technology to enhance students’ learning motivation in Sociology subjects in the 10th grade at SMAS Muhammadiyah 8 Kisaran. The background of the study is based on the fact that learning is still dominated by conventional methods, while today’s learners are a digital generation that requires a more interactive and contextual approach to learning. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and students, as well as observations during the learning process. The research results show that the use of digital media such as Quizizz and Wordwall can significantly enhance students’ attention, active participation, and learning motivation. Students showed positive responses as learning felt more enjoyable and competitive. However, there are challenges such as limited internet access and teacher readiness. Technology integration has proven to be effective in supporting learning that aligns with the characteristics of Generation Z. Therefore, the use of digital media is recommended as an innovative strategy in Sociology education.

Abstract

This research analyzes ethnic leadership in Suka Mandi Hilir Village and its influence on emerging social tensions among residents. The main objective of this study is to understand how village leaders from majority ethnic groups manage interethnic relationships and address potential conflict in a multicultural setting. The primary method used was a descriptive qualitative approach involving in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that unequal representation in leadership contributes to feelings of social exclusion among minority groups, particularly during village head elections. However, the village head’s efforts through interethnic social programs and the role of religious leaders and women’s prayer groups proved effective in mitigating conflict and fostering social cohesion. Village forums remain symbolically exclusive, thus requiring communication reform to ensure equal participation among all residents.

Abstract

This study examines the widespread phenomenon of online gambling among adolescents, including in rural areas, which has created quite complex social problems. This study aimed to describe the level of adolescent involvement in online gambling, its impact on social behavior, and family and community efforts to prevent it in Kotasan Village, Galang District. The study used a qualitative descriptive method with primary informants (village officials and community leaders), key informants (adolescent online gamblers), and supporting informants (peers and community members). Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that adolescent involvement in online gambling in Kotasan Village, Galang District, is relatively high, especially among those who have dropped out of school or are unemployed. They generally access online slot and lottery applications via smartphones, often playing in coffee shops or areas with free Wi-Fi, with the most significant influence coming from peer encouragement and easy access to technology. The impacts are evident in changes in social behavior (becoming withdrawn, lying, neglecting responsibilities), family conflicts due to misuse of money, decreased school performance or work motivation, and psychological problems such as stress and mild depression. Preventive efforts undertaken by families, community leaders, and religious institutions are still limited to advice, reprimands, or spiritual activities. However, they fail to address the root of the problem and are inconsistent. These findings confirm that online gambling poses a serious threat to adolescent development and social order, necessitating a more comprehensive prevention strategy through synergy between families, communities, religious leaders, and village governments, focusing on supervision, digital literacy, and the provision of productive activities.

Abstract

Kearifan lokal merupakan aset penting yang harus dilestarikan, termasuk pemanfaatan tumbuhan oleh masyarakat di pedesaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisasi jenis-jenis tumbuhan berupa sayuran dan buah-buahan yang dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat Desa Naman, Kecamatan Naman Teran, Kabupaten Karo. Metode pengabdian dilakukan melalui observasi langsung, wawancara dengan tokoh masyarakat, dan dokumentasi lapangan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lebih dari 15 jenis tumbuhan yang dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan pangan maupun obat tradisional, seperti sawi, wartel, tomat, jeruk, dan pisang. Pemanfaatan ini tidak hanya berfungsi untuk kebutuhan sehari-hari, tetapi juga memiliki nilai sosial budaya dan ekonomi. Inventarisasi ini diharapkan menjadi referensi dalam pengembangan potensi lokal berbasis kearifan tradisional.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) with the theme of Sustainable Lifestyle at SMAS Budisatrya Medan. Rising waste accumulation and declining ecological awareness among students underscore the need for educational intervention. The research specifically aims to describe how P5 is carried out and how students, teachers, and the school perceive its impact. Using a qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and documentation, the study engaged students, teachers, and the principal as participants. The findings show that students actively participated in waste sorting, recycling, and reforestation, which nurtured ecological awareness and values of discipline, responsibility, and cooperation. Teachers highlighted that P5 was more effective than conventional classroom learning because it provided direct experiential engagement, although limited facilities, time constraints, and uneven motivation were noted as challenges. The principal emphasised that P5 aligned with the school’s vision of fostering environmentally responsible characters but required family and community reinforcement. In conclusion, this study proves that P5 enhances ecological awareness and strengthens character formation through experiential learning, with sustainability hinging on wider stakeholder involvement.

Abstract

The phenomenon of phubbing ignoring social interactions by focusing more on smartphone use is increasingly widespread among students at SMAS Budi Satrya Medan and has a significant impact on their learning behaviour. This study aims to identify the negative effects of phubbing on students’ concentration, motivation, and academic performance, as well as to explore the strategies teachers implement to address this issue. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, in depth interviews, and document analysis. The results indicate that phubbing behaviour causes serious attention diversion, disrupts the learning process, lowers student participation, and weakens social interaction in the classroom. Teachers employ various methods such as restricting smartphone use during lessons, educating students about the negative impacts of phubbing, using face-to-face communication approaches, and assigning group tasks to minimize phubbing effects. This study emphasizes the crucial role of educators in actively raising awareness and creating a conducive learning environment to reduce phubbing behaviour and support optimal academic achievement in the digital era.

Abstract

This research examines the ecology of rice fields in the Pantai Labu District. The community in the Pantai Labu District utilizes the ecology of rice fields not only as a food supplier but also as a tourist destination that can add value to the rice fields in the Pantai Labu District. The aim of this research is to describe how the community is able to increase the high value of the rice fields in Denai Lama Village, Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency. This research also discusses the culture and local wisdom in the Denai Lama Tourism Area and the activities that are characteristic of the culture and local wisdom in the Denai Lama Tourism Area, Deli Serdang Regency. The method used in this research is qualitative research with ethnographic methods. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation. The research results state that Denai Lama Tourism Village is the first Tourism Village in Deli Serdang Regency, initiated by the Head of the Department of Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism of Deli Serdang Regency. This village is also considered one of the cleanest villages in Indonesia and has often received national awards. By utilizing the rice fields not only for food supply but also as a tourist destination, it adds value to the rice fields which has a significant impact on Denai Lama Tourism Village. The principle of this tourism village is more towards education, culture, culinary, making it an attraction for Denai Lama Village. This place is located on vast hectares of rice fields, with interesting photo spots for visitors. There are also many unique activities in Denai Lama Village, such as traditional culinary snacks, an annual folk festival, and a horse dance performance. Ethno-tourism in Denai Lama Village is a suitable title for research because it is one of the local wisdoms in North Sumatra, specifically in the Pantai Labu District, Deli Serdang Regency.
