Abstract

The study aimed to examine the learners’ perception of the use of local-based digital storytelling on learning resilience and learning autonomy. Perceived ideas were purposively taken from 30 learners who experienced a local-based digital storytelling-making process in an English for Communication in Academic Settings class. The findings of the study revealed that learners perceived digital storytelling as highly motivating and useful for learning resilience and learning autonomy. They indicated a need for more local-based digital storytelling in their language learning, recognizing its value in understanding the necessity of resilience in overcoming adversities. Learners believe that digital storytelling practice improves their creativity, critical thinking, and information retention, hence strengthening the connections between real-life experiences and academic knowledge. The collaborative and participatory aspect of digital storytelling enhances students' self-learning and ownership of learning autonomy. Examining learners’ perceptions can be useful to articulate their ideas about the language learning process related to learning strategies, strengths and weaknesses to improve. It can also assist language educators to promote inclusivity in the classroom by providing insight into the individual qualities of learners.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a nutrition problem that can slow down the growth. With prevalence at 32.5%, Landak Regency in West Kalimantan has been designated as a stunting hotspot. The lack of a maximum penalty for the stunting case in Landak Regency is not based on factors causing the stunting itself, because there is no identifiable factor causing the stunting in certain area due to narrow roads and sharp curves. Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify causes and distribution of the stunting case in Landak Regency. Methods: A total of 330 households in Meranti, Sebangki, and Senakin were included in this cross-sectional study because they were at a risk of the stunting. Toddlers, mothers, health care, and environmental factors were among the found variables. The researchers employed a basic random sampling strategy for the sampling and used the secondary health center data to find out whether or not toddlers were stunted. Researchers in this study collected data on the independent variables by observing and interviewing participants. Using the chi-square test, the data was analyzed. Results: The results showed that determinants of the stunting in Landak Regency were the history of early breastfeeding initiation (p-value=0.032), exclusive breastfeeding (p-value=0.042), frequency of exclusive breastfeeding (p-value=0.040), the continued breastfeeding (p-value=0.024), complementary feeding (p-value=0.042), immunization history (p-value=0.007), infectious disease history (p-value=0.000), maternal height (p-value=0.046), delivery assistance (p-value=0.000), access to health services (p-value=0.004), the role of health workers (p-value=0.002), and family latrine ownership (p-value=0.000). Conclusions: Several factors were found to be associated with incidence of the stunting among toddlers in Landak Regency.

Abstract

Teaching and learning effectiveness rely on multiple factors, including cognitive, social, and teaching dimensions. Although past research has looked into how the community of inquiry (CoI) affects learning, there is still limited knowledge about how CoI connects with project-based learning and digital storytelling. This study examined the connection between the community of inquiry (CoI) framework and critical thinking skills within project-based learningusing digital storytelling. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed to analyze the relationships among cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence (components of CoI), as well as their impact on engagement and critical thinking skills. Data were collected from 100 students engaged in a digital storytelling project through self-reported questionnaires on a Likert scale. The findings revealed that cognitive and social presences significantly affect student engagement and critical thinking, in line with the CoI framework. Conversely, teaching presence showed an insignificant relationship with engagement, indicating that in contexts that emphasize critical thinking, cognitive presence is more vital. This study highlights that while teaching presence can enhance emotional engagement and lower cognitive load, its role may be less prominent in activities focused on critical thinking. The results emphasize the need for context-specific strategies in applying the CoI framework to effectively develop critical thinking skills in project-based learning settings involving digital storytelling.

Abstract

This study investigates the differences in writing strategies between upper secondary school students from rural schools in Penang, Malaysia, and Pontianak, Indonesia, to understand the influence of cultural and educational backgrounds on their approach to writing tasks in English. Utilizing a structured questionnaire with a Likert Scale, data from 109 Malaysian and 100 Indonesian students were analysed through descriptive statistics and t-tests for Equality of Means. The findings reveal significant differences in general, pre-writing, during-writing, and post-writing strategies between the two groups. Malaysian students exhibit a stronger inclination towards writing in their native language and utilizing bilingual dictionaries, while Indonesian students demonstrate a higher preference for writing in English during leisure, using English-to-English dictionaries, and relying on English grammar books. The study highlights the diverse approaches to language use and learning, suggesting potential cultural or educational influences shaping these practices. The data accentuates the importance of considering these contextual factors in enhancing writing instruction and suggests tailored educational interventions to address specific needs and practices. The findings also suggest educational interventions can improve planning and outlining skills, promote creative language use, and increase language resource usage. Educators should consider students cultural and educational contexts, tailoring strategies to diverse learning styles by integrating bilingual resources, promoting language experimentation, and emphasizing feedback and revision.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low development of students' soft skills in the learning process in higher education, which tends to focus solely on cognitive aspects. This study aims to develop an integrated thematic Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model that aligns with the Content-Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, where English is learned through specific course content to strengthen students' work skills. Using the ADDIE development model, a mixed method approach was used in this study involving 100 Management Study Program students and two English lecturers. Data were collected through a needs analysis based on Target Situation Analysis (TSA), a Likert scale survey validated with Cronbach's Alpha, and semi-structured interviews analyzed thematically. The expert evaluation recommended adding real case studies and more interactive activities. The final evaluation showed that integrating PjBL and CLIL effectively improved students' communication and soft skills. The results of this study indicate that the model can support curriculum development and improve students' readiness to face academic and professional demands. In conclusion, the development of integrated thematic PjBL with a language and CLIL can effectively train and strengthen students' soft skills in higher education. Implementing integrated thematic PjBL with a language and content-integrated learning approach can effectively support the development of students' soft skills in higher education, especially in collaboration, communication, and contextual problem-solving.
