Abstract

This study explores how transformational leadership shapes team commitment and fosters loyalty and engagement among academic and administrative staff in higher education institutions in Makassar, Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and documentation at three selected universities. The findings reveal that transformational leaders—such as rectors, deans, and department heads—play a vital role not only as policy makers but also as role models, facilitators, and motivators. By clearly communicating the institution’s vision, encouraging open dialogue, and empowering team members, these leaders cultivate a strong emotional connection between individuals and the organization. Key strategies identified include entrusting staff with leadership roles in strategic projects, offering open and meaningful recognition, and creating a collaborative work environment. These approaches were shown to enhance intrinsic motivation, strengthen a sense of belonging, and build long-term organizational commitment. The study highlights the significance of human-centered leadership in navigating the complex challenges faced by today’s higher education institutions.

Abstract

In Indonesia's tourism industry, where workforce diversity is high and service excellence is essential, the urgency to implement inclusive and equitable workplace practices is increasingly critical. Many tourism businesses still struggle to translate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts into meaningful employee outcomes, creating a pressing need for empirical investigation. This study aims to examine the influence of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on employee engagement and organizational commitment, incorporating psychological safety as a mediating variable and leadership style as a moderating variable. A quantitative research design was adopted using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). Data were collected through purposive sampling from 350 employees in hotels, travel agencies, and hospitality services across Indonesia, all with at least one year of experience in the tourism sector. The analysis confirms that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion significantly enhances employee engagement and commitment. Psychological safety serves as a robust mediator, while leadership style significantly strengthens these relationships. Furthermore, both engagement and commitment positively affect employee retention. The study’s novelty lies in modeling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as a higher-order construct and empirically testing its indirect and interaction effects in the context of Indonesia's tourism industry. These findings make theoretical contributions to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion literature and provide practical insights for promoting inclusive workplace policies that foster long-term workforce stability.

Abstract

Aims: This study aims to explore the key issues and potential for implementing Green Infrastructure (GI) in the Tallo River area of Makassar, the largest city in Eastern Indonesia. Given its strategic location near the city center and its extensive undeveloped wetlands, the Tallo River region presents a valuable opportunity for sustainable urban development. The research emphasizes the need for integrated planning that addresses natural, economic, and social dimensions, positioning the Tallo River as a multifunctional resource capable of delivering diverse environmental benefits. Methodology and results: Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a decision support and spatial analysis tool, this study evaluates environmental and socio-economic characteristics of the Tallo River area within the Green Infrastructure framework. Spatial data were analyzed to identify and map existing ecological functions, climate adaptation potential, and flood mitigation capacities. Through this process, various GI components and their functions were classified, and priority zones for Green Infrastructure implementation were delineated based on overlapping environmental and social values. Conclusion, significance and impact study: The findings highlight the critical role of GIS in supporting integrated urban planning and environmental management. Conceptualizing the Tallo River area as a multifunctional green space offers a pathway to enhance ecological resilience, address climate risks, and improve urban livability. This study provides actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners, reinforcing the significance of spatial analysis in guiding sustainable development strategies in rapidly urbanizing regions.
