Abstract

Background: Indonesia is in second place with the highest number of Tuberculosis (TB) cases in the world with a death rate reaching 144,000 cases per year. Smoking has become the second biggest risk factor for TB in Indonesia after poor environmental conditions and Indonesia ranks third with the highest number of smokers in the world. Objective: To analyze the relationship between cigarette expenditure and TB Case Notification Rate in 2021-2022. Method: The study design is an observational quantitative study using secondary data. Mapping was carried out using the QGIS application and spatial analysis was done using the GeoDa application's spatial regression. Results: in 2021 the majority of provinces in Indonesia are in the medium category for average per capita weekly cigarette expenditure and is in the low category for CNR TB. In 2022, most provinces in Indonesia were in the high category for average per capita per week cigarette expenditure and in the medium category for TB CNR. Papua Province needs to get more attention from the government because even though the average cigarette expenditure is low, the TB rate is high. DKI Jakarta Province needs to receive more attention because apart from its high TB rate, the average per capita cigarette expenditure is also high. There’s a relationship between cigarette expenditure and TB CNR in 2021 but not in 2022. Conclusion: There was an increasing trend in cigarette expenditure and TB CNR in Indonesia from 2021 to 2022 and a lack of consistency in the relationship between the two variables from 2021 to 2022.

Abstract

Background: The Nutrition Heart Program is a community empowerment initiative implemented to enhance the weight of toddlers based on local food capabilities. The 2024 evaluation results revealed that 46.85% of participants experienced fluctuating weight trends. Narayan's four elements of community empowerment (access to information, inclusion/participation, accountability, local organizational capacity) play a crucial role in future program enhancements. Objectives: To assess the Nutrition Heart Program based on the four elements of community empowerment. Methods: The research was conducted using a qualitative design and was conducted in 10 nutrition centers supported by Amerta Kasih. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews with cadre representatives, pregnant women, and field assistants at each nutrition center. Triangulation of methods was utilized to validate the validity of the results of data collection, namely by observation and document studies. Results: Access to information on the program includes the use of WhatsApp, flyers, field facilitators, and health workers. Most mothers of toddlers actively participated, although some were also mothers of toddlers who were passive due to work commitments. Cadres play an active role in program implementation, handling certain administrative reports are done by cadres as a form of accountability. There are no local organizations engaged in program implementation. Conclusions: Three of the four elements of community empowerment are evident in the nutrition heart program. Efforts should be made to establish or involve local organizations in program implementation of the program, as well as efforts to optimize the implementation of the other three empowerment elements.

Abstract

Background: TikTok is a social media application that has become popular among the younger generation due to its short, creative, and straightforward content. These aspects can render TikTok a potential application for mental health education. However, the downsides of lacking credibility checks and the potential for spreading misinformation exist and can be harmful to users.  Objectives: This scoping review aims to explore the potential and challenges of TikTok as a medium for mental health education. Methods: This study employed a scoping review approach. Three databases were employed in the data review: Science Direct, ProQuest, and PubMed. ‘Mental Health’ and ‘TikTok’ were the primary keywords. After rereading each paper with consideration for the relevance and lucidity of the findings, it was determined that 16 articles were suitable for this evaluation. Results: TikTok may be used as a platform of mental health education, awareness-raising, and support due to its wide reach and interactive nature. Its effectiveness relies on the content type and quality, psychological characteristics of users, and credibility checks. Minimizing the danger of misinformation and emotional disturbance of users is a concern. There needs to be more media literacy, content regulation, and active participation of mental health professionals in content creation to harness the TikTok platform to its full potential as a mental health education tool.    Conclusions: TikTok can to be a powerful tool for mental health education and literacy, but its effectiveness is contingent on content quality, user characteristics, and credibility filtering. To realize maximum gains and reduce the risk of spreading misinformation and injurious content, strict moderation, regulation, and user education are required.

Abstract

Increased volumes of domestic hazardous waste, especially during the pandemic, pose a serious challenge to health and the environment. In Medokan Ayu Village, Surabaya City, ineffective waste management has the potential to harm the community and the environment. Therefore, this community service activity aims to train housewives in identifying and managing domestic B3 waste in a safe and integrated manner. The method applied includes three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In the implementation stage, socialization, training on waste sorting and labeling, and assistance in establishing waste banks were conducted through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. The evaluation results showed that 90% of the participants could practice B3 waste management correctly. In addition, 7 waste banks were formed in each RT that support waste management and provide economic benefits, with an income of up to Rp300,000 per RT. In conclusion, this activity succeeded in increasing community awareness and skills in effectively managing hazardous waste. This model can be replicated to support sustainable waste management in other areas.

Abstract

Purpose: E-waste is among the most rapidly increasing types of waste worldwide. This paper aims to systematise the existing literature and explore future research prospects on the effect of e-waste on urban health. Methods: This systematic review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. This literature search utilized articles available in the ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases, published within the last ten years (2014-2024), to explore the relationship between e-waste and urban health. Results: E-Waste poses serious environmental and health risks, especially in areas with weak regulations and poor waste management. Exposure to hazardous substances through air, soil, and water, such as lead, mercury, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), can lead to respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurodevelopmental issues. Informal recycling worsens these risks, particularly for workers and nearby communities. Weak enforcement, economic barriers, and low public awareness further exacerbate the problem. Effective mitigation includes extended producer responsibility (EPR), formal recycling systems, and a circular economy. Urgent action is needed through stronger policies, enforcement, and awareness; future research should focus on developing sustainable e-waste solutions. Conclusion: Our findings underscore the urgent need for integrated e-waste management policies and practices to safeguard urban public health and mitigate the adverse effects of e-waste exposure. This review lays the groundwork for future research aimed at understanding and addressing the complex health challenges posed by e-waste in urban environments.

Abstract

Introduction: Mount Semeru experienced a pyroclastic flow in 2021. Volcanic material was observed heading towards Lumajang Regency. Natural resources and the environment were significantly affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru. The eruption can have both short-term and long-term impacts on the surrounding natural resources and environment. In 2023, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with Master of Disaster Management, Postgraduate School of Universitas Airlangga (MDM PGS UNAIR) implemented the Assistance for Recovery and Productivity Improvement of Natural Resources and Environment (ARPINRE) program in the areas affected by the Mount Semeru eruption, namely Lumajang Regency, East Java Province. This article aims to report the results of the ARPINRE program in Lumajang Regency. Methods: The disaster-prone area assistance was carried out based on various theories and approaches related to disaster management. These include Disaster Management, Water, Air, Sanitation, and Health (WASH) along with indicators from SPHERE.Results: Before conducting the assistance, the team conducted a study of inventory and prioritization of issues. Technical guidance activities were conducted as a follow-up to the established interventions. There were three technical guidance (I, II, III). Based on the results of pre-tests and post-tests distributed to technical guidance participants, as well as interviews with the self-sustaining community (SSC), it was concluded that there was an increase in public understanding of the importance of waste sorting and management through Integrated Waste Management Sites (IWMS) and the importance of biopores as a means of water conservation and composting. Stimulus provision, an integral part of this activity, was also carried out alongside technical guidance III. Evaluation results showed an increase in the average pre-test score from 52.67 to 65.33 in the post-test.Conclusions: Despite this increase, the average score remained low. Continued socialization about solid waste management is necessary.
