Abstract

This article explores the role that literature plays in social movements, particularly in the gender equality movement such as women’s autonomy in social settings. By comparing two literary works, A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen and Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, the article investigates the impact of literature on the first wave of the feminist movement in Norway in 1879 and the portrayal of women's conditions in Indonesia at the time. The research employed qualitative research methods such as content analysis and discourse analysis, as well as comparative analysis of the two literary works. The research found that A Doll’s House played a significant role in the Norwegian feminist movement and gave women confidence and the awareness that they were not merely puppets for men, but human beings whose voices needed to be heard. Similarly, Bumi Manusia showed resistance and awareness of the oppression faced by Indonesian women, highlighting the role of literature in promoting equality movements. These important literary works demonstrate the power of literature in documenting, retelling, and raising awareness of people's stories, ultimately reaching a larger audience.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze the Indonesian film Menjelang Magrib released in 2022 using critical genre theory. The movie is potentially a social thriller, where the antagonist is not an individual but rather society. This qualitative research adopts a descriptive approach and will gather data through observation methods with heuristic and hermeneutic readings of selected character dialogues relevant to the topic of analysis. The findings indicate that the society in the film indeed serves as the antagonist, as it discriminates against a person with mental health problems by shackling her and acting selfishly towards the environment. The movie sheds light on the issue of discrimination and environmental degradation and depicts society as the cause of these problems. The use of critical genre theory provides a framework for understanding the societal elements at play in the film and helps to analyze the film's message and purpose. Overall, the study supports the notion that Menjelang Magrib can be analyzed as a social thriller, where society serves as the antagonist.

Abstract

Government policies, including curriculum development, significantly impact education quality. Indonesia's frequent curriculum changes contrast with Türkiye's 2017 curriculum overhaul. Türkiye outperforms Indonesia in science literacy based on PISA 2018 results. The Merdeka Belajar policy aims to enhance Indonesia's global competitiveness, particularly in STEM education. Curriculum approaches differ, with Türkiye emphasizing practical learning and early physics concepts, while Indonesia relies more on rote memorization. Frequent curriculum changes in Indonesia stem from political and regional factors. This study highlights disparities in PISA scores and curriculum structures, underscoring areas for Indonesia's improvement. Adapting to international standards while considering local contexts is crucial for enhanced science literacy. The research employs a case study methodology, utilizing curriculum documents, interviews, and research articles for analysis, providing insights and recommendations for both countries. Research results indicate that Türkiye's structured curriculum and emphasis on practical learning contribute to its higher science literacy scores compared to Indonesia. In conclusion, this study underscores the need for Indonesia to align its curriculum policies with international standards, while also focusing on fostering critical thinking and practical learning approaches to enhance science literacy outcomes and remain globally competitive in education. Keywords: Curriculum Development; Education Policies; Science Literacy; Comparative Study

Abstract

This study investigates the learning and reinforcement of gender roles throughout people's lives and the evolution of women's roles in Indonesia. By conducting a comparative analysis of two novels (Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and Antologi Rasa by Ika Natassa) the study explores the depictions of gender progression in Indonesian literature. Specifically, the analysis focuses on how gender roles and expectations have evolved between the era depicted in both literary works. In Bumi Manusia, women are depicted in traditional roles such as prostitutes, mistresses, wives, helpers, and teachers, whereas in Antologi Rasa, women hold positions as respectable as men, highlighting the progress of gender equality in present times. Additionally, the analysis examines the autonomy of the characters in terms of education, career, and family choices, highlighting the freedom women characters have in Antologi Rasa compared to the restrictions placed upon women in Bumi Manusia. The comparison of these novels provides valuable insight into the changing attitudes and roles of women in Indonesian society.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has compelled a shift to online learning, thereby necessitating parental involvement in their children's education at home. In this study, we aim to explore the perceptions and roles of parents in guiding their children's mathematics education during the pandemic. Our research comprises a sample of 67 participants who are parents of junior high school students with diverse occupational backgrounds in Jambi, Riau, and West Sumatra. We adopted an accidental sampling technique to select our research sample. The primary instrument for our study is a questionnaire that consists of closed questions that probe parents' emotions, knowledge, and perceptions regarding their responsibility in supporting their children's learning at home. Our survey was conducted in two phases: the initial phase spanning six months at the onset of the pandemic, and the second phase occurring several months later. Our findings indicate that during the first phase, parents were generally unaware of their roles and held negative perceptions of the online learning process. However, in the second phase, parents demonstrated a more proactive and mentoring role in supporting their children's online learning. Our study highlights the vital role of parents in facilitating their children's education during the pandemic and suggests that parental involvement is essential for optimizing online learning outcomes.

Abstract

This paper examines the role of empathy in fostering a gender-sensitive atmosphere in elementary schools, especially among sixth-grade students. It seeks to address the issue of lack of empathy, which has been linked to the prevalence of sexism, misogyny, and sexual abuse in today’s society. The research objective is to assess the efficiency of incorporating an empathetic approach in classroom activities to enhance gender awareness among students. The research uses a qualitative experimental design and an empathetic approach by applying Gender Responsive Scorecard (GRS) and Empathy map as the foundation of activities design. The research result indicates and provides evidence of the effectiveness of the empathic approach in improving students' understanding of experiences that differ from their own, especially regarding gender. In addition, the results will guide educators and researchers on how to incorporate an empathetic approach in promoting gender responsiveness in the classroom.

Abstract

This research aims to apply the phenomenological and psychosocial approaches in analyzing the main character in "L’Enfance d’un Chef" by Jean-Paul Sartre. In this study, the author uses a qualitative descriptive method to explore the subjective experience of the character and the concept of freedom in the literary work. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of human experience in their social environment through a phenomenological approach in literature. The study starts with identifying the background and context of the literary work and exploring the theories related to this research, including phenomenology and psychosocial theory. The author applies phenomenological and psychosocial approaches to analyze the main character and understand his subjective experience. The results show that the main character, Lucien, has a complex and interrelated subjective experience with his social environment. Phenomenological analysis helps the author understand how Lucien perceives and gives meaning to his life experience, while psychosocial analysis helps the author understand the social and psychological factors that influence Lucien's life experience. The conclusion of this study is that the phenomenological and psychosocial approaches can be used to analyze characters in literature and can provide a deeper understanding of the subjective experience of humans in their social environment
