Abstract

Determinant of stunting in children 2-3 aged years in Ciamis District West Java ProvinceBackground: The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is still high (at 37,2%), while in the province of West Java is at 35,8%. Household food security is one of the indirect causes of the nutritional problems. Aspects of food security in the form of food availability and access to food are related in a household that affects the aspect of the level of food consumption in every household or individual that is not being met. Objective: The study aims to analyze whether household food security was the determinant of stunting in children aged 2-3 years in Ciamis Districts. Methods: This was an observational study with a case-control design. Subjects in this research are households. Information from a total of 349 households, i.e. 168 had stunted and 181 without stunted children, were collected. Respondents consisted of mothers, fathers, and children aged 2-3 years in Ciamis District. Subjects were selected using quota sampling. Data were analyzed using t-test and logistic regression. Results: Food availability, food access, energy, and protein consumption were not associated with stunting (p>0,05). There were significant differences between the average height (Z-score) of children based on the father's height, the mother's height, and the mother's education level (p<0,05). Breastfeeding, initial formula feeding, father's education level, and a large number of families were not associated with stunting (p> 0,05). Conclusion: This study observed that household food security was not the determinant of stunting. After controlling for potential confounders, the children's heights were independently associated with parental heights and maternal education.

Abstract

Failure to thrive in children is influenced by the quality of food consumed. Children aged six months and above require complementary feeding as a nutritional supplement, which should be prepared with texture suitable for their age to ensure digestibility. Local fish, containing low allergencity protein, is a recommended choice for complementary feeding. This activity aimed to enhance knowledge among mothers of toddlers, particularly those with children aged 6–12 months, about complementary feeding using local ingredients. The participants were mothers active in Naluri Posyandu and Kencana Posyandu in Panglayungan Village, Tasikmalaya City. The method involved stages of activity, including (1) monitoring child weight and (2) providing nutritional education on complementary feeding. The nutritional status monitoring showed that 20,00% of toddlers in Naluri Posyandu were stunted, with 9,00% severely stunted. While in Kencana Posyandu, 21,00% were stunted and 6,00% severely stunted. Through educational activities, mothers’ knowledge significantly improved, with pretest scores averaging 5.87 and posttest scores 8.02. The Wilcoxon test confirmed a significant difference in knowledge before and after intervention (p-value =0,000, p-value <0,05). This program had a positive impact on enhancing maternal knowledge. It is recommended that posyandu continue regular educational activities on complementary feeding and related topics, either through posyandu cadres or in collaboration with relevant institutions.

Abstract

The incidence of stunting under five is also related to the low level of knowledge in providing food intake that can meet children's needs. Appropriate intervention is expected to be able to deal with stunting incidents which can be irreversible at a later stage This study aimed to determine the effect of developmental stimulation interventions and providing MP-ASI nutrition education on stunted children under five. The design of this study was experimental with pre and post design. This study used educational media MP-ASI modules and stimulation, detection, early intervention of child growth and development (SDIDTK) by first conducting developmental screening using a developmental pre-screening questionnaire (KPSP). The intervention is carried out for 1 month. The subjects in this study were 44 stunted toddlers in Condong Village using a purposive sampling method. For data that were not normally distributed, the Wilcoxon test was used to determine the significance of the effect of the intervention, and for normally distributed data, a paired t-test was used. There were significant differences in the variables of weight, height, nutritional status, height/age, and energy intake of stunting toddlers before and after the intervention (p-value<0,05). However, there were no significant differences in the variables of protein, fat intake and child development (p-value>0,05). It is necessary to carry out further research related to the duration of providing child development stimulus to stunting toddlers, so that the results of changes in child development can occur significantly.

Abstract

Abstract Stunting is a chronic nutritional issue caused by long-term malnutrition, significantly impacting children's growth and health. Although the national stunting rate has decreased, prevalence in some areas, such as Tasikmalaya City, remains relatively high. In August 2022, the Kahuripan subdistrict recorded a stunting rate of 9.41%. This problem is influenced by the community's lack of understanding of the importance of good nutrition, limited education on exclusive breastfeeding and complementary foods, and the limitations of posyandu cadres' skills in detecting stunting. In the Kahuripan subdistrict, posyandu cadres' skills are currently limited to weighing and recording data, without in-depth evaluations of children's growth. To address this issue, there is a need to empower posyandu cadres and educate mothers on the importance of providing nutritious food and proper techniques for monitoring nutritional status. This community service program aims to enhance the knowledge of posyandu cadres and mothers regarding nutrition, particularly through the use of local foods as complementary foods such as chaya pudding, and the use of simple technology for stunting detection. Educational activities are conducted through lectures and demonstrations, as well as simulations of chaya pudding preparation. The program took place on July 6, 2024, with 20 participants who engaged enthusiastically. This activity is expected to improve the quality and quantity of food provided to toddlers and reduce the prevalence of stunting. Keywords: posyandu cadres; toddler; stunting; complementary feeding

Abstract

This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design to measure the effectiveness of a public health campaign in improving balanced nutrition awareness in primary school children. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test using a structured questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. The results of the analysis showed a significant increase in the average score of students' knowledge from 65.20  7.80 before the intervention to 88.60  5.20 after the health campaign (p=0.001), as well as students' awareness which increased from 60.30  6.70 to 85.50. This study provides empirical evidence that well-designed nutrition education can be a solution to address nutritional problems in children, such as malnutrition and obesity, thereby supporting the creation of healthier and more productive generation in the future.
