Abstract

This study seeks to describe the struggle of a Muslim transgender ascetic in claiming religious space for transgender in urban Indonesia by creating a pesantren (Islamic school). The study was conducted in Al-Fattah Pondok Pesantren, the only Islamic school for transgender in Indonesia. Al-Fattah is created by Bu Maryani, a transgender ascetic, who contributed her money, thought, energy and prayers for this school, to provide spiritual sanctuary for transvestites, despites her worsening economy and health. While many transvestites look for alternative religion, the experience of Al-Fattah reveal that transgender Muslims may find their religious sanctuary within traditional Islamic practices, not outside the traditional institutions. Al-Fattah transgender Islamic school reveal the power of lived religion, pesantren, and traditional forms of religious rituals to validate Queer spiritual practices. We argue that the use of the traditional forms of religious rituals enable the Muslim transgender to overcome the dilemma of fluidity-and-fixity in queer religious practices.

Abstract

Da'wah is an effective means of the scholars to convey religious knowledge while maintaining the direction and orientation of the people. However, preaching with the provision of religious knowledge is not enough. Dai need to equip themselves with a pure heart, sincere love for others, love for the homeland, historical knowledge, respect and gratitude for previous scholars and leaders, and sincere aspirations to realize the common good, safety, prosperity and security for the wellbeing of the nation. In this article, the author, based on the thoughts and experiences of Habib Lutfi, the great Indonesian scholar who is also a reformer of Islamic da'wah in contemporary Indonesia, presents a fundamental da’wah thought reform which can be implemented in the contemporary Islamic world.  Habib Lutfi's messages lay a solid foundation for da’wah based on deep spirituality, the sincerity and purity, local history, revitalization of basic religious messages such as birrul walidain, trust in God (tauhid) and tolerance; unity, love for the motherland and arousing pride in the nation's own products. Habib Lutfi also emphasized that the next generation should not disappoint their predecessors , and that unity and economic nationalism for the wellbeing of the nation is closer to daulatul Islamiyah than aspiration for the formalization of religious law. Habib Lutfi's preaching approach summarized in the love for the country has been proven to be effective in tackling the increasing hoaxes and dividing the people. Habib Lutfi's da’wah is flexible, inclusive and based on solid foundation of sanad chain.

Abstract

AbstractIn this article, I describe a methodological model I used in a experimental study on how to integrate character within the practice of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) at the higher education Indonesia. This research can be added to research about character education and CLIL in tertiary education, giving nuances to the practice of CLIL so far predominantly a practice in primary and secondary schools. The research was conducted in Semarang State University, in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, in Sociology of Religion bilingual class. The research indicates that the integration of character within CLIL enrich the perspective of CLIL by strengthening the use of CLIL for intellectual growth and moral development. On the other side, the use of CLIL with character education gives methods and perspectives to the practice of character education which so far only emphasise contents reforms without learning methods reforms. The research also reveals that the weakness of CLIL in using text for classroom learning can be overcome by the use of specific reading and writing strategies. I develop a practical text strategy which can be effectively used in highly conceptual subject such as sociology of religion.

Abstract

This article explores the use of storytelling by the Muslims of South Sulawesi in their efforts to confront the formalization of Islamic law in the province. My specific objective is to nuance the existing approach to Islam and Muslim life, which to date focuses on scriptural argumentation, or analytical reasoning based on the Quran and other Islamic sources. The exclusive focus on scriptural argumentation as the main approach to explain Islam does not help us to understand how Muslims use non-analytical forms of human communication in response to shari’a formalization. The experiences of Muslims in South Sulawesi demonstrates that storytelling can be a meaningful and direct means to express Islamic identity and to challenge the formalization of shari’a. In the hierarchies of reasoning used in South Sulawesi by Muslims, scriptural argumentation is not the most important

Abstract

Landscape of Indonesian politics is overshadowed by wide and massive distribution of hoaxes and bullshits. This article reviews 70 latest articles to answer the following questions: what is underlying behind massive distribution of hoaxes? Why do many Indonesian educated publics believe and share hoaxes?  Why are there more religion-based hoaxes than science or economy sciences based hoaxes in Indonesia? The author finds that the massive distribution of hoaxes and their easy acceptance by Indonesian publics reveals the emergence of post truth, a mind set where emotion is regarded to be more important than fact, evidence, or truth. In religius context, post truth illustrates the distribution of banal religion, un-verified forms religious interpretation, in internet and social media. Political competition during the presidential election accelerates the distribution of religion-based hoaxes.

Abstract

The lifestyle development of Kudus City high school students who follow the Korean Wave has raised concerns over the decline of the long-rooted local culture of Gusjigang. This study aimed to determine the Korean Wave lifestyle, explain the influencing factors of the lifestyle, and analyze the impact of the Korean Wave lifestyle on Gusjigang values. A qualitative approach was employed in this study, with phenomenological research as the research design. The data in this study were obtained from the research informants. The data validity checking was conducted with the power credibility test, which in this study adopted the triangulation method. The current trend of the Korean Wave lifestyle among high school students in the Kudus Regency involves constantly seeking information about K-Pop through social media and mixing Korean and Indonesian in their daily conversations, which indicates the acceptance of Korean lifestyle. Several contributing factors to the Korean Wave lifestyle of high school students in Kudus Regency were the music lyrics' connection to the high school students' personal lives. At present, the Gusjigang lifestyle is still adhered to by high school students in Kudus City so that it keeps the habits that have been practiced for years.
