Abstract

This study examines the persistence of Shalawat Ngelik, a traditional form of religious musical performance practiced in Kampung Mlangi, Yogyakarta. Although earlier studies have documented the historical background and cultural characteristics of this tradition, the social mechanisms that enable its continuity across generations remain insufficiently explored. This research analyzes Shalawat Ngelik as a social practice using Pierre Bourdieu’s conceptual framework of habitus, capital, and field. The study employs a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with community members and performers, field observations during religious gatherings and practice sessions, and supporting documentation related to the activities of the Shalawat Ngelik group. The findings show that the persistence of Shalawat Ngelik is sustained through the interaction of several forms of capital embedded in the religious life of the community. Social capital emerges through networks associated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and communal religious activities. Cultural capital appears in the musical competence required to perform the repertoire and distinctive vocal techniques of Shalawat Ngelik. These competencies gradually develop into symbolic capital as skilled performers gain recognition within community events. Economic capital operates collectively through practices such as berkat, which support communal performances without turning the tradition into a commercial activity. The study also finds that the regeneration of Shalawat Ngelik occurs through the reproduction of religious and cultural habitus rooted in everyday participation rather than through formal institutional training. This study shows that the continuity of Shalawat Ngelik is maintained through the interaction of social networks, cultural competence, symbolic recognition, and communal support embedded in local religious life. The findings contribute to discussions on the persistence of local religious traditions and the role of social practice in sustaining cultural expressions within contemporary Muslim communities.

Abstract

Contemporary pesantrens have developed in response to modernity and digitalisation. Santri non-mukim, who attend activities at the Jegongan Manfaat pesantren but do not live there, face challenges such as inconsistent commitment, minimal supervision, and attachment to other areas, such as school, work, and family. This study uses Pierre Bourdieu's practice-based theory of habitus, capital, and field to analyse strategies for nurturing non-resident students at the Jegongan Manfaat pesantren. A qualitative research method involving observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation was employed using a case study approach. The results show three main strategies: community-based mentoring through age-based segmentation to strengthen solidarity; an interpersonal approach involving persuasive discussion and personal guidance; and implementing a contemporary Islamic education curriculum that connects religious studies with modern issues. Repetitive social practices and intense interactions allow religious values to be internalised, forming the habitus of non-resident students. These findings emphasise the role of contemporary pesantrens as effective environments for shaping religious attitudes in the face of modern challenges.

Abstract

This article discusses the study of the living Qur'an of “women’s Pesantren” with a character study approach namely Nyai Munjidah Wahab. So far, women’s Pesantren have been stigmatized as a group of women who only act as “konco wingking”, and their scope of work is only in the domestic or internal area of the pesantren. The leadership of “women’s pesantren” is often considered as a "second class leader" because the main support for pesantren is the kyai or male figure. Nyai Munjidah Wahab gave a different color among the women’s Pesantren in general, by not only becoming the leader of her pesantren but entering the public sphere through organizational and political channels to become a regional head. With the living Qur'an method, this study aims to examine the religious reasoning that frames Nyai Munjidah's behavior on one side and see how Nyai Munjidah Wahab brings QS. An-Nisa: 34 to life in her thoughts and behavior both in her family, Pesantren and in her public leadership. The Living Qur'an of “women’s Pesantren” is analyzed using a gender and cultural perspective. Data collection techniques using observation and interviews. The results of this study indicate that the forms of Nyai Munjidah Wahab's living Qur'an are manifested in several forms of culture, both cognitive and non-cognitive cultures as well as performative and informative cultures that are thick with the values of gender equality. From a cultural perspective, Nyai Munjidah's living Qur'an is a form of active and passive cultural adaptation carried out by Nyai Munjidah Wahab as a “woman’s Pesantren”.
