Abstract

This article discusses the study of the living Qur'an of “women’s Pesantren” with a character study approach namely Nyai Munjidah Wahab. So far, women’s Pesantren have been stigmatized as a group of women who only act as “konco wingking”, and their scope of work is only in the domestic or internal area of the pesantren. The leadership of “women’s pesantren” is often considered as a "second class leader" because the main support for pesantren is the kyai or male figure. Nyai Munjidah Wahab gave a different color among the women’s Pesantren in general, by not only becoming the leader of her pesantren but entering the public sphere through organizational and political channels to become a regional head. With the living Qur'an method, this study aims to examine the religious reasoning that frames Nyai Munjidah's behavior on one side and see how Nyai Munjidah Wahab brings QS. An-Nisa: 34 to life in her thoughts and behavior both in her family, Pesantren and in her public leadership. The Living Qur'an of “women’s Pesantren” is analyzed using a gender and cultural perspective. Data collection techniques using observation and interviews. The results of this study indicate that the forms of Nyai Munjidah Wahab's living Qur'an are manifested in several forms of culture, both cognitive and non-cognitive cultures as well as performative and informative cultures that are thick with the values of gender equality. From a cultural perspective, Nyai Munjidah's living Qur'an is a form of active and passive cultural adaptation carried out by Nyai Munjidah Wahab as a “woman’s Pesantren”.

Abstract

Local wisdom is deeply embedded in various regions, including Semarang City. However, many forms of this wisdom remain unpublished despite their unique characteristics and cultural significance. Research from the 2018 Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) UNESCO convention identified traditions such as the Dugderan and Warag Ngendog, offerings at Rewanda Cave Kreo in Gunung Pati sub-district, and the Bende Nangkasawit carnival. However, lesser-known traditions persist, such as Nyadran in Kyai Asy'ari Sentono village, Ngijo sub-district, where dozens of goats are ritually slaughtered. This study aims to analyze the meaning of Nyadran, examine its social construction using Peter L. Berger's theory, and explore the values represented within the tradition. The research employs a qualitative approach with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings reveal three key aspects: First, the Nyadran tradition symbolizes gratitude, spiritual reflection, and devotion to Islamic teachings. Second, the social construction of Nyadran follows Berger's stages of externalization, objectivation, and internalization, solidifying it as an annual community tradition without empirical foundations. Third, the tradition reflects significant cultural and economic values, fostering communal solidarity while supporting local economic activities. Despite its importance, Nyadran remains underrecognized. Therefore, it is recommended that stakeholders, including cultural organizations and local governments, document, preserve, and promote this tradition to ensure its sustainability and broader appreciation. By highlighting the cultural richness of Nyadran, its values can contribute to strengthening both local identity and tourism in Semarang City

Abstract

In the midst of modernization, many traditional arts are endangered due to lack of interest from the younger generation. Globalization has brought challenges to the preservation of traditional arts, including efforts to maintain cultural identity in Indonesia. This research examines the role of the Gambang Semarang Art Company (GSAC) Community in the formation of art activist identity in the younger generation through a qualitative case study approach. The research aims to understand the motivation of the younger generation to join GSAC, the activities organized by the community, as well as the role of the community in shaping the identity of art activists in the younger generation. The research findings show that: (1) young people are motivated to join GSAC because of their love for traditional arts and the need for a supportive community; (2) in order to preserve Gambang Semarang, GSAC organizes various creative activities, including rehearsals, collaboration with schools, and participation in festivals; (3) GSAC plays three important roles in helping to shape the identity of art activists, namely as a forum for identity negotiation, an agent of cultural adaptation, and a space for social interaction. In the face of the challenges of globalization, this research makes a significant contribution to efforts aimed at the preservation of arts and culture. By showing how local arts groups can evolve into dynamic centers of cultural identity, this research also uses theories of symbolic interactionism and social identity.

Abstract

Muslim fashion, which is synonymous with simplicity and piety, is now undergoing a transformation into a medium for self-expression, aesthetics, and even lifestyle, especially among female college students. This study aims to understand how Muslim female students at Semarang State University (UNNES) adapt contemporary Muslim clothing through social media. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection methods in the form of in-depth interviews, observations, and digital documentation from informants' social media posts. The results of the study show that social media, especially Instagram and TikTok, play a central role in the process of adapting fashion styles. Muslim female students are not only passive consumers, but also play an active role in choosing, combining, and representing clothing that suits their aesthetic tastes, personal identity, and religious values. There is a process of negotiation between sharia values and modernity, which gives birth to new forms of Muslim clothing that are more flexible and adaptive to the context of the times. In this case, social media is not just a channel for information, but also a space for producing new meanings that change the way people think, appear, and interpret Islamic identity in everyday life

Abstract

The popularity of the Boys' Love (BL) series from Thailand has reached a global audience including Muslim women. This raises a moral dilemma felt by Muslim women due to their dual identity. The dual identity includes identity as a Muslim woman and identity as a connoisseur of the Boys' Love (BL) series from Thailand. The moral dilemma that occurs is certainly very related to the contradiction between their norms and preferences. The purpose of this study is to explore in depth the moral dilemma and also the effort to overcome the perceived moral dilemma and analyze the reasons and viewing behaviors shown for the preference as connoisseurs of the BL Thai series in Muslim female students at one of the public universities in Semarang. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation and in-depth interviews. The results of the study show that: (1) The reasons why Muslim female students consume the Thai BL series are different from each other. (2) The behavior of Muslim female students watching the BL Thailand series is shown through the frequency of consumption of the BL Thai series to their interaction with the community. (3) There is an impact felt by Muslim female students as a result of enjoying the BL Thailand series. (4) The moral dilemma felt was guilt due to enjoying the BL Thailand series. (5) There are two efforts made to overcome moral dilemmas, namely by responding to the moral dilemma or avoiding the perceived moral dilemma.

Abstract

Abstract

Globalisation and modernisation are often perceived as threats to preserving cultural traditions. This study explores how the Jalawastu community in Brebes, Central Java, Indonesia, maintains its cultural identity through practising and transmitting oral traditions. Despite exposure to external influences—including interpersonal interactions and digital communication technologies—the Jalawastu people demonstrate a dynamic between adaptation and cultural continuity. Their exposure to the outside world, facilitated by interpersonal interactions and communication technologies, has had significant implications for the continuity and transformation of their oral traditions. Using a qualitative research design, data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis draws on oral tradition and social change theories, particularly Ogburn’s (1922) and Soekanto’s (2012) works. The findings reveal a complex interplay between cultural preservation and transformation. Oral traditions are being preserved through their integration into cultural tourism, while shifts occur due to increased interaction with outsiders, especially through employment and intermarriage. These changes have prompted younger generations to leave the village, often due to their inability to conform to traditional norms. The study offers valuable insights for cultural policy, community development, and heritage education programs, particularly in rural and indigenous settings facing similar challenges.

Abstract

The Pesanggrahan Dalem Paku Buwono IX (PB IX) is situated in Langenharjo Village, Sukoharjo Regency, Indonesia. The site was founded in 1870 by PB IX (1830-1893), but it is currently facing environmental degradation, despite its past pristine water and natural hot springs. However, with the new management takeover by GPH Wicaksono, a descendant of the Surakarta Royal Family, there is hope for the conservation of this heritage site. This research explores servant leadership practices within the cultural context of GPH Wicaksono as the manager of heritage site in Langenharjo village. Drawing on Greenleaf's servant leadership principles, it examines how Javanese culture, and the wisdom of the manager can foster collective engagement in environmental preservation. The study aimed to provide valuable insights into leadership's role in promoting sustainability for the heritage site and the local community. The identification of servant leadership implementation in the heritage site was using a qualitative approach. Data collection involves on-site observations and in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders, including community leaders, members of the community, and cultural enthusiasts. The data is analyzed using phenomenology analysis to identify specific servant leadership behaviors of site manager and their role in fostering environmental preservation and sustainability within the community. The study's findings showed that the manager is dedicated to preserving the heritage site by promoting strong ties with Javanese culture and tradition. He encourages an eco-friendly mindset and collective participation to sustainably protect the environment. He also values effective communication and respects his colleagues, which in turn fosters trust and empowerment among the team. By following principles of Javanese culture, he leads and empowers communities toward environmental sustainability. This study contributes to the importance of incorporating cultural values in leadership practices to foster collective engagement and green awareness for long-term environmental preservation. It serves as an initial study for further research using quantitative analysis to deepen our understanding of servant leadership’s effectiveness in diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

JADAM is an organic farming method that has been proven to empower farmers, not only allowing farmers to make their own fertilizers and pesticides, but also returning farmers to become experts in agriculture and their own land because of the experiments and introduction of biological potential in the environment they observe. The purpose of this article is to develop a JADAM model that is adjusted to the availability of materials in the surrounding environment. It is done under the concept of organic farming, and community empowerment. This article is developed from the results of a community service activities. The findings of the research show that there are three ways of making organic fertilizer from materials found the surrounding, namely household organic waste, leaf shoots, and a combination of waste to make organic NPK. Another interesting development of the JADAM method is an organic fertilizer that can be drunk, made from fruits and vegetables. It proves that organic fertilizer is more than safe so that it can be drunk.
