Abstract

Writing remains a challenging skill for many students, particularly in generating and organizing ideas. Although the effectiveness of outlining techniques has been widely investigated, teachers' perceptions of their use remain underexplored despite their importance for effective classroom implementation. Understanding teachers' perspectives is essential for informing pedagogical practices and supporting the effective use of outlining techniques in writing instruction. This study explored teachers' perceptions of outlining techniques and identified their benefits and challenges in writing instruction. Using a basic interpretative qualitative design, this study involved five English teachers from schools in Sidoarjo and Surabaya. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and observations and analyzed thematically through coding, theme identification, and interpretation. The findings revealed that teachers perceived outlining positively because it helped students organize ideas and supported a more systematic writing process, although several implementation challenges were identified. Overall, the findings provide insights for optimizing outlining techniques in writing instruction

Abstract

Writing is an essential skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, particularly in developing students’ ability to produce narrative texts. This study aims to explore English teachers’ perspectives on the use of ChatGPT as a writing assistant in narrative writing instruction and to identify its perceived benefits and challenges. A qualitative study employing a basic interpretative design was conducted with five English teachers selected through purposive sampling based on their experience using ChatGPT in teaching. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that teachers perceive ChatGPT as a valuable tool for supporting students’ idea generation, language development, and understanding of narrative text structure. It also assists teachers in preparing instructional materials and facilitating classroom activities. However, teachers also reported challenges, including students’ over-reliance on ChatGPT, ethical concerns related to plagiarism, difficulties in monitoring responsible use, and the potential reduction of students’ critical thinking skills. These findings imply that ChatGPT can effectively support narrative writing instruction when integrated with appropriate pedagogical guidance, ethical awareness, and teacher supervision to promote meaningful and responsible learning.

Abstract

Vocational high school students often face difficulties in developing their English-speaking performance in classroom learning. Integrating digital visual media may support students in practicing speaking more effectively. Therefore, this study investigates the effectiveness of Digital Storyboard using the Storyboard That platform to improve vocational high school students’ speaking skills. This study employed a one-group pre-experimental design involving students from a public vocational high school in Sidoarjo. Students’ speaking performance was measured using pre-test and post-test assessments and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test and effect size analysis. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ speaking scores, with the mean score increasing from 45.06 in the pre-test to 57.06 in the post-test. The statistical analysis indicated a significant difference between the two tests (Z = -5.233, p < .001), with a moderate-to-large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.71). These findings suggest that digital storyboard media can effectively support the improvement of vocational high school students’ speaking performance in English learning.

Abstract

This study aims to deliver a detailed account of the prevailing literature while offering significant observations by accentuating the primary aspects of the flipped classroom and its benefits, factoring in the hurdles related to this teaching technique. The modern world is transforming into an environment where a wide range of technologies emerges, undergoes testing, and subsequently spreads swiftly. This significant transformation is evident in various fields, especially in education. This shift calls attention to the essential task of rethinking and rigorously scrutinizing the prevailing educational paradigm, the positions of instructors and students, and the teaching resources in practice. Additionally, the transition from traditional methods to innovative strategies is inevitable. The flipped classroom blends engaging learning experiences through collaborative and individual tasks in class, while lower-level tasks and self-study occur outside using digital resources. The researchers perform a theoretical review to thoroughly explore the incorporation of the flipped classroom model into our educational practices. The flipped classroom framework presents a promising strategy for boosting student learning and engagement. By thoughtfully addressing the related challenges and capitalizing on the potential advantages, educators can cultivate a more vibrant and effective learning atmosphere. Additional studies are required to evaluate the enduring consequences of the flipped classroom approach and to ascertain effective methods for its application.
