Abstract

This paper reports on a study looking at the reading and writing proficiency and vocabulary knowledge of Indonesian EFL teachers, the relationship between proficiency and years of service, and the teachers’ own perceptions of their proficiency in English. Three proficiency tests (Vocabulary Levels Test/VLT, Reading and Writing Tests), questionnaire, and interview were used to collect data. The results point to mixed levels of English language proficiency, negative correlations between years of service and vocabulary, reading and writing test results, and that teachers themselves had difficulties in judging their own English language proficiency. Factors that inhibit the capacity of teachers to focus on their English proficiency are presented. Limitations of the study as well as implications for EFL teachers’ professional development (PD) and future research are also discussed.

Abstract

Previous studieshave highlighted the benefits of self-regulated writing (SRW) strategies in the EFL/ESL context. However, little is known about the use of these strategies inthe process of completing a dissertation. Anchored by the limitations of previous studies, this case study aimed to investigate and understand the use of SRW strategies by Indonesian doctoral students majoring in English Language Education. Through purposive sampling, four doctoral students at a public university in Indonesiawere selected as the participants. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The qualitative data analysis indicated that the participants used eight SRW strategies, namely idea planning, noticing, text processing, selecting physical environments, seeking social assistance, feedback handling, goal-oriented monitoring and evaluating, and self-talk. This article provided descriptions and explanations of how each strategy was used in the process of completing the participants’ dissertations. The findings of this study also provide pedagogical implications especially in raising doctoral students’ awareness in using SRW strategies as well as contributing to the theoretical development of SRW theory.

Abstract

Abstract: Twenty research papers published in international conference proceedings are analyzed in terms of its thematic progression manifestation to know the coherence built within the papers. The analysis obtained that among the three thematic progression manifest, zig-zag pattern is the most frequent pattern manifest by 388 patterns, followed by theme reiteration by 317 patterns and multiple rheme by only 8 patterns. This indicates that although the writers are lack of information regarding thematic progression, their unconscious manifestation of thematic progression allows the coherence built within the text, making the readers able to comprehend and understand the papers easily. Abstrak: Sebanyak 20 artikel yang telah publikasi di prosiding konferensi internasional dianalisis berdasarkan manifestasi Pola Great Tema untuk mengetahui koherensi yang dikembangkan dalam artikel. Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the correlation between reading and listening in TOEFL ITP test and how much reading predicts listening. It involved 50,684 reading and listening scores in 2015-2019 test periods of undergraduate students in one of the state universities in Malang. The data were collected by using standardized TOEFL ITP issued by ETS. Using Pearson Correlation Product Moment and linear regression analysis, the result demonstrated reading and listening had significant, linear, and strong correlation (.682), and reading significantly predicted 46.5% variance of listening. The results lead to the hypothesis that two language input skills, reading and listening significantly correlated and predicted one another. The result also suggested that correlation language skills not only occurred among reading and writing and listening and speaking, but also it happened in reading and listening. Moreover, the results suggested the combination of reading and listening activities in classroom activities.

Abstract

EFL teachers’ reasons for selecting instructional materials during the COVID-19 pandemicThe COVID-19 pandemic has changed how teachers teach and students learn in the classroom. One of the challenges in the online teaching is that teachers are required to prepare the instructional materials for their students. This study aims at investigating the EFL teachers’ reasons for choosing the instructional materials in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. By employing a set of questionnaires, this study collected the data from 219 English teachers from various levels of education online via the google form link. The data collection was done for one month starting from 5 May to 5 June 2020. The data were analyzed through a content analysis by identifying, grouping, and categorizing similar and different responses. The results of analysis showed that the EFL teachers have five categories of reasons in selecting the instructional materials in the time of pandemic: the instructional materials should be easy, relevant, simple, attractive, and absent from crime, pornography, and viruses. These results suggest that the EFL teachers make use of these reasons in selecting and developing the instructional materials for their students during and after the pandemic. For future textbook developers, these considerations can be used a reference to develop textbooks which accommodate students’ voices and teachers’ voices during the online teaching and learning activities. Abstract

Rhetorical studies thus far have investigated the crucial rhetorical pattern in research discussion. However, those studies have not provided sufficient analyses on Toulmin’s model as a framework to determine arguments’ quality in research discussion. This study aims to investigate the ELE undergraduates’ arguments’ quality that manifested in research discussion. The finding of the study reveals undergraduates’ tend to form almost-complete arguments that consist of four Toulmin arguments elements, namely “Claim”, ”Data”, ”Warrant”, and “Back-Up” while “Qualifier” and “Rebuttal” are missing. This study provides interpretive elaboration of overall quality of the arguments and possible factors that led two elements being disregarded.
