Abstract

This collaborative classroom action research described the use of storytelling in teaching English speaking. The qualitative data consisted of field notes, students’ diaries, photographs, and videos of teaching and learning process collected through observations and analyzed descriptively. The quantitative data were the students' scores in their English speaking performance generated through speaking tests and analyzed by using Microsoft Excel. The findings showed that the use of storytelling in teaching speaking could attract students’ attention to the lesson and encourage them to speak English. Pronouncing words, constructing sentences, and retelling the story could enhance students’ speaking performance. The students’ mean scores in their speaking performance tests got a significant improvement from cycle to cycle.

Abstract

The present study examines four pairs or eight students who wrote their creative writing assignments collaboratively. As opposed to the popular view, which stated that writing is one of the most difficult subjects to learn for EFL students, many studies have reported that collaborative writing (henceforth CW) is regarded as a technique that can improve students’ productive writing skills to a great extent. The researchers would like to see how effective CW was for the students who did their writing assignments with their pairs by employing a qualitative case study to examine the eight students’ experiences in writing their essays and fictional stories. The researchers wanted to know why some students could adapt to this learning model, and others faced some problems or failed to achieve the target of learning outcomes. Opened-ended questionnaire and in-depth interviews are used to elicit data from the students. The first pair was the most successful example of partnership in writing since they opened themselves for critiques and suggestions. In contrast, the second pair had some problems that disturbed their collaboration as they did not seem to open themselves for critiques and suggestions. The third pair failed to do an effective partnership because they could not solve problems that blocked their cooperation right from the beginning. The fourth pair found their way for an effective collaboration when they opened themselves for critiques and suggestions. The success or failure in the partnership heavily depends on each student collaborator's willingness to open themselves for criticism and suggestion.

Abstract

Driven by sparse investigations on cultural content in a textbook in English as a foreign language context, this study aims to analyze the cultural information embedded in an English textbook for senior high school students in Indonesia. A critical content analysis was employed to analyze the textbook entitled “Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade XI” in compliance with the cultural information cores from Adaskou et al. (1990). The findings showed that the textbook contains four main topics of cultural information infused in 14 reading texts, 20 pictures, 30 recordings, and seven cultural awareness texts. The reading texts provide equal information related to target culture (i.e., the culture belongs to English speaking countries) and local culture, but the pictures, recordings, and cultural awareness topics tend to inform the target culture information. Furthermore, the researchers found several weaknesses in the reading texts and pictures where the information provided was too general that they neither contain cultural information nor relevant to other information in the textbook. Meanwhile, all pictures were in white and black with less detail provided. The results suggested that teachers should adapt and balance the cultural information in the textbook with their local cultures or norms by finding other materials from various sources.

Abstract

The principal objective of English language instruction in Indonesia is to furnish Indonesian pupils with the ability to communicate effectively in English. The English communicative skills of Indonesian school graduates have been found to be low, which can be attributed to the prevalent use of traditional student-centered approaches that emphasise linguistic structural properties. Additionally, the lack of exposure to and usage of the target language in the classroom further contributes to this issue. A limited number of students possess the ability to effectively convey concepts, perspectives, and emotions utilising English as a means of interaction. The objective of this review article is to advocate for the effectiveness of the task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach in enhancing the communicative abilities of students in Indonesia. This paper utilises various theoretical frameworks and empirical studies to undertake a critical examination of the advantages and drawbacks associated with the implementation of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in Indonesia. The argument posits that Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) facilitates organic learning, engenders inherent motivation among students, and fosters the development of language skills, which may result in an expedited enhancement of communicative proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract: Nowadays, the rapid development of technology has an impact on increasing the number of users of information and communication technology (ICT). The development of technology has brought to various applications that can be used in the context of learning. However, the development of technology is not accompanied by an increase in teacher competence in integrating technology into learning and teaching process. This condition is caused by some factors, such as, teachers are less motivated and do not get sufficient knowledge and skills to take advantage of these learning applications. This current training activity aims to improve the competence of teachers in utilizing ICT as a learning medium as well as to produce scientific articles as a result of community service. This training was conducted in an offline mode at SMPN 46 Muaro Jambi, with the agenda and materials prepared by the team. The number of participants who attended this training was 50 teachers from 3 different schools located around the location of the training. The training material is in the form of practical use of learning applications consisting of HotPotatoes, Kahoot, and Superteacher. As a result, participants were enthusiastic in participating in the training and were able to use some of the learning applications carried out in the training.

For 21 students in junior high school who have been distributed a questionnaire could be found that some students have some problems in reading efficacy and intrinsic motivation (reading work avoidance). Some solutions to solve students’ reading motivation are 1) Sociocultural environment is part of a solution in creating reading motivation in order peer influence happened on it. 2) By viewing locus of control, appropriate book and text determine the reading motivation of the students. 3) Furthermore, the students must be given the freedom to choose the kinds of text that they want to read. 4) reward and punishment can be applied on the reading class to invent students’ reading motivation 5) activating the school library can increase reading interest but must be accompanied by making several programs that support reading activities.
