Abstract

The development of digital technology and social media has driven changes in Generation Z's consumption behavior, particularly through self-reward lifestyle, shopaholic behavior, and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). These three factors have the potential to increase consumptive spending patterns and decrease the quality of financial management. This study aims to analyze the influence of self-reward lifestyle, shopaholic behavior, and FOMO on consumptive spending patterns and financial management of Generation Z. This study uses a quantitative method with a causality approach. The research sample consisted of 152 Generation Z students majoring in Islamic Banking at UIN North Sumatra who were selected using the Slovin formula. Data were collected through a Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using multiple linear regression with the help of IBM SPSS 26. The results showed that self-reward lifestyle, shopaholic behavior, and FOMO have a positive and significant effect on consumptive spending patterns. In addition, the third variable also has a negative and significant effect on Generation Z's financial management. These findings emphasize the importance of controlling consumptive behavior and increasing financial literacy to create more rational and sustainable financial management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the influence of religiosity, lifestyle and Sharia financial literacy on paylater usage behaviour in North Sumatra. This study employs a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 100 students from the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra who have used or are currently using paylater services. The data were analysed using multiple linear regression with the aid of SPSS. The results indicate that, taken together, all independent variables have a significant influence on ‘PayLater’ usage behaviour. However, when analysed individually, only religiosity has a significant influence, whilst lifestyle and Sharia financial literacy do not have a significant influence. These findings indicate the existence of a gap between religious values and financial behaviour (value-behaviour gap), whereby a high level of religiosity is not always accompanied by financial practices that conform to Sharia principles. The coefficient of determination of 0.506 indicates that the research model has a reasonably strong explanatory power. This study makes an empirical contribution to understanding the use of ‘paylater’ services among Muslim students and emphasises that the implementation of religious values and Sharia financial literacy needs to be strengthened in a more practical manner in order to foster financial behaviour that is in line with the principles of Islamic economics.

Abstract

This research aims to thoroughly investigate the extent to which financial technology and the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS) service influence the overall effectiveness and efficiency of payment systems utilized by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) operating within the bustling and dynamic environment of Medan City's Car Free Day (CFD) zone. The study employs a comprehensive quantitative research methodology, meticulously collecting data through carefully designed questionnaires distributed directly to MSME owners and operators who conduct their business activities in the CFD area. To ensure the relevance and accuracy of the sample, purposive sampling techniques were utilized, resulting in a total of 84 participants who met specific criteria related to their engagement with digital payment systems and QRIS usage. The responses obtained from these questionnaires were measured using a Likert scale, allowing for nuanced analysis of respondents’ perceptions and experiences, and the data were then processed and analyzed using the latest version of IBM SPSS Statistics (version 29), ensuring rigorous statistical testing and validity. The findings from the analysis reveal compelling evidence that financial technology services have a positive and statistically significant influence on the effectiveness of the payment systems employed by MSMEs, with a t-value of 4.822 and a p-value less than 0.05, indicating strong significance. Similarly, the implementation and utilization of QRIS services also demonstrate a positive and significant impact, with an even higher t-value of 10.238 and a p-value below 0.05, underscoring QRIS as the most influential variable among those examined. When considering both variables collectively, the results show that financial technology and QRIS services together exert a highly significant and positive effect on payment system effectiveness, as evidenced by the F-statistic of 166.846 and a p-value less than 0.05. The coefficient of determination (R²) is calculated to be 0.805, meaning that approximately 80.5 % of the variation observed in the effectiveness of payment systems can be attributed to these two key independent variables, while the remaining 19.5 % of the variation could be explained by external factors not directly measured within this study.

Abstract

The advancement of financial technology has driven the emergence of various innovations in digital financial services, one of which is Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL). This service facilitates the payment process, offers payment flexibility, and provides quick access to financing, making it increasingly popular, particularly among university students. However, the use of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) without proper financial management may potentially lead to financial distress, a condition in which individuals experience difficulties in meeting their financial obligations due to limited economic capacity. This study aims to: (1) examine the intensity of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) usage among students at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra; (2) analyze the impact of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) usage on the financial distress experienced by students; and (3) analyze the efforts undertaken by students to minimize financial distress resulting from the use of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL). This study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The research participants consisted of students at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra who use Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation and were subsequently analyzed using the interactive data analysis model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal that, first, the intensity of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) usage among students is categorized as high. The high level of usage is influenced by several factors, including ease of access, various promotional programs, economic needs, and a tendency toward a consumptive lifestyle. Second, intensive use of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) contributes to the emergence of financial distress, as indicated by difficulties in managing finances, increasing installment burdens, delayed bill payments, and psychological pressure arising from financial obligations. Third, students undertake several efforts to minimize financial distress, including limiting their use of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), preparing financial budgets, prioritizing needs over wants, and improving financial literacy as a foundation for managing personal finances more efficiently. Overall, this study confirms that Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), as one of the services offered by financial technology, provides convenience and flexibility in meeting transaction needs. Nevertheless, when its use is not accompanied by sound financial management and adequate self-control, the service may increase the risk of financial distress among university students
