Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Self Managed Learning (SML) approach in Social Studies (IPS) learning and to evaluate students' learning independence as a representation of learning automation. The concept of learning automation in this context goes beyond the integration of technology; it emphasizes the development of student autonomy in managing their own learning processes actively and responsibly. The research employed a classroom action research design based on Kemmis & McTaggart's spiral model, involving 20 sixth-grade students at SD Pelita Hati Jember. The findings indicate that the SML approach, supported by learning contracts, significantly improved students’ cognitive achievements and key indicators of independent learning such as initiative, responsibility, and self-evaluation. Despite challenges in time management and intrinsic motivation, this approach proved effective in shifting from conventional instructional methods toward an empowering learning model. SML-based Social Studies instruction is highly relevant for nurturing 21st-century skills and character in elementary school students.

Abstract

Banyuwangi, with its extensive coastal area and long shoreline, possesses highly important yet vulnerable coastal ecosystems, particularly due to decreasing mangrove cover, increasing plastic waste, and the declining population of sea turtles. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), as character-based educational institutions, have great potential to instill environmental awareness in younger generations. Therefore, contextual learning activities that directly engage students in coastal conservation efforts are needed. The field practice program at MA Unggulan Al-Anwari Banyuwangi was implemented as an effort to enhance students’ understanding and awareness of maritime issues and coastal conservation. The implementation method consisted of preparation, execution, and evaluation stages, involving 30 students in a series of activities including the planting of 60 mangrove seedlings and 40 sea pandan seedlings, a beach clean-up, and the release of 50 sea turtle hatchlings in the coastal area of Santen Island. The results showed that students not only gained contextual learning experiences, but were also directly involved in real actions to protect coastal ecosystems. There was an 11% increase in understanding, obtained from comparing pre-test and post-test scores. One-month post-planting monitoring showed that the seedlings remained in good condition, although height growth had not yet been significant. The average height increase of mangroves was 4.3 cm, while sea pandan showed an average increase of 3 cm within one month after planting. In addition, students consistently filled out the booklet as a recording instrument, reflecting the development of environmentally conscious habits. This program has proven effective as a pesantren-based environmental education medium while supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, SDG 13, and SDG 14.

Abstract

This study examines linguistic elements in Tengger folktales and their impact on the understanding of speech acts and the social functions of language. The analysis was conducted using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative findings, based on linguistic analysis, indicate that the content of Tengger folktales holds strong potential as material for understanding speech acts and the social functions of language. These social functions are reflected in the narratives through messages conveyed in interactions among parents and children, among siblings, and between humans and their natural environment. From a pragmatic perspective, the understanding of speech acts can be developed through the design of teaching materials. Social functions of language can be naturally derived from the content and embedded social values of the folktales. Pragmatic aspects, particularly speech acts, need to be systematically developed within speech segments, which can be facilitated through instructional materials or learning media. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative instruments, with data categorisation based on contextual criteria. The results of the t-test indicate that appreciative listening to Tengger folktales has a significant effect on students’ understanding of speech acts and the social functions of language. These findings suggest that folklore-based appreciative listening is an effective approach for developing the social functions of language
