Abstract

This article discusses the design of a hydroponic planting process monitoring system based on the internet of things. This device uses an ESP32 microcontroller board as the main controller. The parameters that were monitored and acquired were the conditions of the hydroponic growing media. Those parameters are; water pH, water temperature, water turbidity level, and ambient air temperature and humidity. The five parameters are measured by analog sensors integrated with the ESP32. These parameters affect the growth process and the quality of crop yields. This article also describes the calibration method for each sensor used for parameter measurement. Then the monitoring of these parameters is carried out by utilizing a real-time database, namely Google Firebase. This platform is very suitable for all IoT-based monitoring and control applications. Measurement result data is uploaded and saved to the real-time database. Then paired by Android-based applications. This application was created to be used by hydroponic farmers who use this device. Thus the results of monitoring can be used to optimize the process of growing hydroponic plants.

Abstract

This article discusses the instrumentation system of airlangga robotic triage assistant version 1 (ARTA-1), a robot used as a contact-free triage assistant for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) suspects. The triage process consists of automatic vital signs check-up as well as the suspect’s anamnesis that in turns will determine whether the suspect will get a specific care or not. Measurements of a suspect’s vital conditions, i.e. temperature, height, and weight, are carried out with sensors integrated with the Arduino boards, while a touch-free, hand gesture questions and answers is carried out to complete anamnesis process. A portable document format (PDF) format of the triage report, which recommends what to do to the suspect, will then be automatically generated and emailed to a designated medical staff.

Abstract

The use of solar PV system in Indonesia has expanded to various field and area. One example is residential buildings in urban areas. This article discusses calculation methods for designing a solar power generation system that is applied to residential buildings, such as homes, offices, or colleges. Electricity generated from the solar home system (SHS) is used to support many kinds of electrical equipments, where the electrical equipments are used by building occupants in their daily life. The calculation method is considered from the potential of solar energy and the reliability of the on-site system to generate electricity. The system is designed in an off-grid topology by exchanging connections with the public electricity grid owned by PLN. Calculation results shows that this SHS has a generation capacity of 1 kWp, 24 V 300 Ah battery storage, and a 200 W inverter. This SHS can reduce electricity usage in this sector by 18.2 kWh in average every month.

Abstract

Biogas is a gas obtained from the breakdown of organic matter (such as animal waste, human waste, and plants) by methanogenic bacteria in an oxygen-free (anaerobic) state. The biogas produced mainly consists of 50-70% methane, 30-40% carbon dioxide, and other gases in small amounts. The gas produced has a different composition depending on the type of animal that produces it. It is challenging to obtain biogas concentration data because the monitoring equipment is currently minimal. Therefore, this research discusses how to make a monitoring system for biogas reactors. Sensors are installed in the digester tank and storage tank. The installed sensors are the MQ-4 sensor to detect methane gas (CH4), MG-811 sensor to detect carbon dioxide (CO2) gas, MQ-136 sensor to detect sulfide acid gas (H2S), and Thermocouple Type-K to detect temperature. The sensor will send a signal to the control unit in Arduino Mega 2560, then processed and displayed on the liquid crystal display (LCD). The sensor calculation results' accuracy is not much different from the reference based on the sensor readings. The sensor deviation standard is below 5.0, indicating that the sensor is in precision. The sensor's linearity of MQ-4 is 0.7%, the MG-811 is 0.17%, the MQ-136 is 0.29%, and the Type-K Thermocouple is 1.19%. The installed sensor can be used to monitor gas concentration and temperature in a biogas reactor.

Abstract

Rooftop photovoltaic (PV) plant is one ot the independent electricity that us favorable in recent year. Rooftop PV plant can be used as the source of smart building as well as fast charging station. Although rooftop PV plant could provide clean and sustainable energy from solar, they also come with disadvantages in term of intermittent power output. This intermittent power output is due to the uncertainty of the source. To tackle this problem, maximum power point tracking method is essential. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method can be used to extract maximum power from the solar cell in all conditions. This paper proposes an intelligent method for designing DC-DC MPPT based on fruit fly optimization (FFO) on realistic rooftop PV plant. Practical rooftop PV plant in Universitas Airlangga is employed as the testing system. The proposed method's efficacy is evaluated using time domain simulation. According to the simulation results, the proposed method can significantly extract power from PV.

Abstract

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is a technique to optimize the photovoltaic (PV) current generation, so it can improve the efficiency of solar energy harvesting. MPPT works by searching the voltage which generates the maximum power, called the maximum power point (MPP). MPP value changes by the fluctuance of ambient temperature and solar insolation level depicted by the I-V curve. Searching the MPP will be more complex if the partial shading is happened. The effect of partial shading will rise to more than one local MPPs. In this research, an optimization algorithm is modeled and simulated the MPPT technique in partial shading. The optimization uses the new metaheuristic algorithm which inspired from a physical phenomenon, called Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA). The AOA uses mathematical modeling which has convergence capabilities, balanced exploration, and exploitation and is suitable for solving complex optimization technique, like MPPT. The research used varies partial insolation percentage. The implementation of MPPT-AOA compared to other metaheuristic algorithms to analysis its performance in the aspect of PV system parameters and tracking process parameters. The simulation result shows that the AOA can enrich the MPPT technique and improve the solar energy harvesting which is superior to other algorithms.
