Abstract

This research aimed to develop, evaluate the feasibility, and test the effectiveness of role-play game-based speaking learning materials for tenth-grade Logistics Engineering students at SMKN 1 Angkola Sangkunur. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) design following the Borg and Gall (1983) model simplified into five stages (needs analysis, planning, product development, validation and revision, and field trial), the study involved 32 students as the sample. Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, expert validation sheets, and speaking skills tests (pretest-posttest). Expert validation results indicated that the developed materials were highly feasible (average score 4.65 out of 5). Practicality testing showed a score of 4.58 (very practical category), and student responses were very positive (95%). The pretest mean score was 55.40, which increased significantly to 90.81 in the posttest (t-value 26.50 > t-table 2.04, p < 0.001), with an N-Gain score of 0.78 (high category). These findings demonstrate that role-play game-based speaking materials are valid, practical, and effective in improving vocational students' speaking skills, particularly in fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, vocabulary, and confidence

Abstract

The low level of literacy culture remains a significant challenge in improving the quality of education in rural areas. One of the main causes is the limited access to engaging reading materials and the lack of optimal community involvement in supporting school literacy activities. This community service program aims to enhance students’ reading culture through community-based Reading Corner assistance in Aek Tapa Village. The implementation method consisted of several stages, including preparation, socialization, the establishment of a literacy community, the provision of a Reading Corner, reading activity assistance, and monitoring and evaluation. The target participants were elementary school students, teachers, parents, and local community members. The results of the program showed an increase in students’ interest in reading, an expansion of reading collections through community book donations, greater parental involvement in reading activities, and the establishment of a village literacy community that independently manages the Reading Corner. This program demonstrates that collaboration among schools, higher education institutions, village governments, and the community can create a sustainable learning environment that supports the School Literacy Movement.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and functions of illocutionary acts in the movie script A Man Called Otto (2022), directed by Marc Forster. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes all utterances produced by the main character, Otto Anderson, based on Searle’s (1979) classification of speech acts. The objectives are to identify the types of illocutionary acts and explain their functions within the conversational context of the movie. The findings reveal 371 illocutionary acts classified into five categories: representative (35.58%), directive (28.84%), expressive (24.53%), commissive (9.43%), and declarative (1.62%). Among the 29 identified functions, asking (10.24%), expressing anger (9.97%), and explaining (7.82%) are the most frequent. The results indicate that Otto primarily uses language to express beliefs, convey information, and communicate emotional states. The predominance of representative and expressive acts reflects his direct yet emotionally complex personality and illustrates his gradual character development throughout the story. This study demonstrates the applicability of Searle’s speech act theory in analyzing movie scripts and contributes to pragmatic studies of cinematic discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and compare the word formation processes found in the Archipelago and Politics sections of The Jakarta Post based on George Yule’s (2010) theory. A qualitative descriptive method was applied to analyze data collected from six online news articles published in 2025, consisting of three articles from each section. The findings show that several word formation processes were used in both sections, including borrowing, compounding, blending, conversion, acronym, derivation, and multiple processes. A total of 118 word formation items were found in the Politics section and 116 items in the Archipelago section. Among all types, derivation was the most dominant process, accounting for 46.61% of the data in Politics articles and 79.31% in Archipelago articles. The Politics section contained more acronyms, compounds, and conversions, while the Archipelago section relied more heavily on derivational forms. The study concludes that different news sections tend to use different linguistic patterns depending on their topics and communicative purposes. These findings contribute to the understanding of morphology, particularly the use of word formation processes in media texts.

Abstract

This study analyzes connotative meaning in selected songs from Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album using Geoffrey Leech’s theory. The research aims to identify the types, functions, and characteristics of connotative meaning found in the lyrics. A qualitative descriptive method was employed. The data consisted of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences containing connotative meanings from seven selected songs. The findings reveal three types of connotative meaning: positive (30 data), negative (35 data), and neutral (14 data). Negative connotation was the most dominant type, reflecting themes of heartbreak, emotional conflict, and insecurity. The dominant function was conveying emotion (27 data), while the most frequent characteristics were associative and subjective meanings (19 data each). The study concludes that connotative meaning plays a significant role in enriching the emotional and artistic quality of the album’s lyrics.

Abstract

Environmental crisis has become a lived condition that reshapes cultural imagination, ethical reasoning, and everyday language about the more-than-human world. Despite the rapid growth of ecocriticism, contemporary British drama remains comparatively underexamined, since existing work often prioritizes novels and climate fiction or focuses narrowly on theatrical performativity and environmental symbolism rather than the textual construction of eco-consciousness across multiple plays. To address this gap, this qualitative descriptive study investigates how eco-consciousness and human nature relations are articulated in three contemporary British plays, Colder Than Here by Laura Wade, Greenland by Moira Buffini et al., and Earthquakes in London by Mike Bartlett, focusing on how dramatic texts construct eco-consciousness and human–nature relations. Methodologically, the research employs qualitative close reading and systematic coding of dialogues, monologues, stage directions, and setting descriptions, guided primarily by Garrard’s ecocritical concepts and informed by Buell’s environmental criticism. The findings reveal convergent patterns across the corpus: anthropocentric ideology is normalized through everyday language that frames nature as a resource for development; ecological awareness and environmental ethics surface through characters’ moral reasoning, grief, and responsibility narratives; and human–nature interconnectedness is dramatized as an affective and social condition in which ecological loss disrupts relationships, well-being, and imagined futures. By combining comparison with close textual evidence, the study offers an original contribution to ecocriticism and contemporary drama studies, demonstrating how British theatre provides a distinctive cultural arena for articulating ecological anxiety, ethical deliberation, and sustainability discourse within the wider environmental humanities.
