Abstract

Utilization of educational applications in assessing the reading skills of junior high school studentsGlobalization and the advancement of technology are giving a new challenge as well as opportunities for English educators around the globe. Indirectly, there are obstacles associated with learning English due to the fact that technology has become an integral aspect of human existence. The teaching of reading skill also faces the same challenge. Nowadays, reading is seen as more important than other skills, considering that reading has become one of the aspects of literacy. With regard to assessment, the availability of an educational application might be advantageous for teachers to assess students' reading skills. The current study investigates the types of application used by teachers in assessing students’ reading skill and the type of reading assessment that occur during the implementation of the application. Through open-ended interview and document analysis method, the research result indicates that the implementation of Google Form as an educational application to assess students reading skills demonstrated a reading assessment based on traditional assessment approaches with a focus on intensive reading. This study has shown the appropriate media for assessing students reading skill along with the reading focuses and assessment design that is suitable for it. In addition, in this study, Google Form dominates the most considerable use of media to assess students reading skills. Therefore, teachers could also save more time in assessing students’ reading by utilizing educational applications.Penggunaan aplikasi pendidikan dalam menilai ketrampilan membaca siswa SMPGlobalisasi dan kemajuan teknologi memberikan tantangan sekaligus peluang baru bagi pengajar bahasa Inggris di seluruh belahan dunia. Abstract

This study aims to determine the description of the moral values contained in the English textbook for class XI Senior High School, which the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia approved. The present study uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with a qualitative design method. This study uses critical discourse analysis to determine the moral values in visual and verbal texts. The study found the English textbook contains moral values in behaving in the surrounding environment, both in individual and in groups. Another thing is that most of what is listed in this English textbook contains moral values such as a sense of responsibility for oneself and others. The other findings, a sense of concern for the surrounding environment and concern for others, are described from visual and verbal texts. Thus, the moral values found in this textbook need to be known by teachers and students so that they can think more critically and read about understanding moral values such as a sense of responsibility, care, and concern.

Abstract

This study aims to find patterns of interaction between students and teachers in ELT classes. Participants involved in this study were 32 students and one English teacher. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive design. This relates to the use of language in a social context, namely interaction or dialogue between students and teachers. The author uses 2 types of instruments, namely observation using the blue print protocol and also recording all English learning activities in the ninth grade of SMP N Toboali. Then after making observations and obtaining all the required data, the authors conducted an analysis using FIAS (Flanders Interaction System Analysis) which consisted of 3 parts, namely the teacher's indirect influence, the teacher's direct influence and students' speech responses. The teacher's indirect influence consists of 3 kinds of interactions such as receiving feelings, praising encouragement, accepting or using student ideas, and asking questions. Then, the teacher's direct influence consists of lecturing or explaining, giving directions, and criticizing or justifying authority. The last is the student's response which consists of the student's speech response, student initiation, and silence. According to the research results, there are four types of classroom interaction research: content traffic, teacher control, teacher support, and student participation. Based on the results of the data found, it shows that the dominant pattern used in this study is student participation, with a total of 54 or 45% of utterances. Hence, it can be concluded that the students of ninth grade students at SMPN 3 Toboali were active during the teaching and learning process in class.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how student presences (teaching, social, and cognitive) manifest in online discussions. This study takes place in a pragmatic class in English Magister Class where the researcher is also one of the students. The case study design was applied to this qualitative study, where the sample was taken purposively, consisting of 18 students and two lecturers. The data findings were analyzed using the Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) act taxonomy by Herring et al. (2005). The results revealed that from three presences in Community of Inquiry (CoI), not all students were involved in the discussion, and not all problems or questions raised reached the resolution stage as the goal of cognitive presence. However, there is one thing that can be underlined in the master's study that the authors encountered is that there is no activity in the form of rejecting, which is a speech act that says that they do not agree with other people's opinions, so they look like they agree and follow the direction of the discussion as has been presented by the facilitator.

Abstract

In the teaching-learning process, the lecturers usually play the role of dominant turn-takers. Meanwhile, students mostly perform as small turn-takers. In EFL classrooms, different turn-taking patterns are essential to analyze to identify the students' language politeness during the turn-taking process. The present study analyzed the turn-taking and relational work concerning politeness in online class discussions. For this study, a conversational analysis was performed on online class(es) discussions between students and lectures. A video recording of a classroom conversation between ELT and TEFL was employed. The study found that 16 out of 40 quotations displayed a turn-taking of the Appealing Strategy (AS). The relational work strategy of Being Cooperative (BC) was cited in 22 of 40 quotes. In relational work strategies, BC indicated that the students' responses related to what the lecturer mentioned. Turn-taking and relational work strategies could be one of the tools to determine the students' politeness by combining the characteristics as politeness indicators that focus on students' answers when speaking with the lecturer. Further investigations on gender disparities that use turn-taking and relational work to maintain politeness in online lecturer-student dialogues may prove insightful.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the types of cohesive devices utilised in the recount text writing of Tenth-grade students at MAN Huta Godang during the academic year 2022/2023 and to identify the most prevalent form of cohesive device. The data was taken from 5 students writing. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method that includes cohesive devices in students' writing. It was found that the types of grammatical cohesion were reference, conjunction, and ellipsis. The most frequently used type of grammatical cohesion is the reference. Students who recount text writing using grammatical cohesion can be in the "fair" category with a percentage of 30.2%. The study suggests students should be aware that merely including a large number of cohesive elements in an essay does not guarantee that the essay will demonstrate or even produce cohesiveness; rather, the cohesive elements must be used in a logical and consistent manner throughout the text. Abstract

This research aims to identify the process types of the transitivity system from the reading passages and conversational texts of the EFL textbook entitled Modul Pengayaan for seventh-grade junior high school students, which is composed based on the implementation of Kurikulum 2013. The present study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data of this study are obtained from reading texts and conversational texts (text dialogues). The collected data of the transitivity process presented in sentences and clauses were analyzed using Halliday's transitivity system. The results show that all the process types of transitivity system with 35 processes were found in the reading passages and conversational texts of the textbook, namely: material process with 5 data (14.28%), mental process with 12 data (34.28%), verbal process with 3 data (8.57%), relational process with 13 data (37.14%), behavioral process with 1 data (2.85%), and existential process also with 1 data (2.85%). All the types of transitivity processes have been presented adequately based on Halliday's theory, although the two types of transitivity process (behavioral and existential process) almost have come from ignorance. Therefore, this study suggests that the textbook designer and material developer produce diverse clauses and sentences by using the six process types of transitivity in English written texts, especially in the reading passages and conversational texts.

Abstract

Examining cohesion of students’ compositions (e.g., students’ thesis writing, narratives) has been conducted by many researchers, yet cohesion of students’ multimodal text creations (a picture with captions) is still paucity. Therefore, this study aims to fill the research gap by examining the cohesion of students’ multimodal text creations using grammatical cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (2014a) and inter-semiotic cohesive devices proposed by Liu and O’Halloran (2009). The students’ caption text analysis showed that students use three cohesive grammatical devices: references at 49%, conjunctions at 46%, and substitution at 5%. The most frequent types of them used by the students are personal references at 76%, additive conjunction at 63%, and clausal substitution at 67%. In addition, the analysis of inter-semiotic cohesive devices shows that parallel structure is hardly found in multimodal texts. Still, surprisingly, inter-semiotic polysemy is utilized by students to create co-contextualize relationships between language and images and experiential convergence. The study concluded that students in the twelfth grade of Nurul Huda Vocational High School lack using various cohesive devices. Nonetheless, they complement their caption with inter-semiotic cohesive devices embedded in the images. This study implies that the students still need more time allocation to study the subject at hand and go through the writing process as professionals do to create a better text for more elaboration and characteristics of written language with accuracy and consistency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the grammatical cohesive devices used in the recount text writing of bilingual students. The cohesive device is crucial because it consists of grammatical and lexical devices that contribute to the writing’s strength and accuracy, as well as its contextual understanding. Twenty bilingual ninth-grade students of a junior high school participated in this study. The students’ recount text writings were used as the main data in this research. The qualitative descriptive method employed in this study to thoroughly assess and describe students’ writing and its’ cohesive device used. The result shows that the bilingual ninth-grade students were able to use grammatical cohesion in their recount text writing. The result revealed the reference is most dominated in 68.42% and the second device is in conjunction with 29.97%. Meanwhile, substitution showed the low rank with 1.61% and the last was ellipsis with 0%. Furthermore, in the reference device category, personal reference becomes the most highly used at 85%, meanwhile in the conjunction category, additive category becomes the most frequent one at 46% as well as nominal substitution at 50% in the substitution device. It was also found that the ninth-grade students of bilingual class can write well using numbers of grammatical cohesive devices even though there was still some monotonous repetition in their writing.  he findings of this study have pedagogical implicature as the need to enhance students’ knowledge of grammatical cohesion device because understanding of cohesiveness is necessary for pertaining to the text’s cohesion and coherence particularly in writing ability.
