Abstract

Abstract

National chili demand continues to increase, but productivity at the farmer level remains low due to attacks by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) virus. Benai Kecil Village, Benai District, Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau, is a horticultural center with low chili productivity (4–5 tons/ha), far below the potential of commonly used superior varieties. This community service activity aims to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in chili cultivation by initiating the use of the superior virus-resistant Neno variety. The program was implemented for five months with stages of socialization, field practice, mentoring, monitoring, evaluation, and follow-up. The results of the activity indicated that farmers improved their understanding and skills in chili cultivation techniques, including seeding, soil cultivation, maintenance, and pest and disease control. The evaluation showed that the Neno chili variety has the potential to be developed because it is adaptive to dynamic climate change and effectively reduces the risk of curly virus attacks. In addition, the use of virus-resistant varieties can also support environmentally friendly pest and disease control. This program demonstrates that the development of the superior Neno variety has the potential to be a sustainable strategy for increasing chili production while simultaneously strengthening food security and farmer welfare.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in cultivating chili plants and preventing geminivirus infection, a major constraint in production. The activity was carried out through outreach activities covering the stages of land cultivation, virus infection prevention techniques, whitefly population control as a vector, land clearing of weeds that are hosts of geminivirus, sanitation of infected plants, and proper pesticide use. In addition, participants were also introduced to the use of chili varieties resistant to the yellow geminivirus as an alternative sustainable solution. The results of the activity showed an increase in farmers' understanding of healthy cultivation strategies and integrated pest control, with an average score increasing from 45% to 85%, with the vector control aspect increasing from 30% to 90%. This outreach is expected to reduce the level of virus infection and increase chili productivity.

Abstract

Women has a strategic role in rural economic development, including in micro-business groups such as the Joint Business Group (KUBE). However, limited production skills, weak business management, inadequate financial recording, and traditional marketing strategies remain significant obstacles to improving competitiveness. This community service program was carried out at KUBE Kerupuk Lomang Ubi Bersinar Kuok, Kampar Regency, with a focus on strengthening women’s roles through a sociopreneurship approach. The implementation methods included training on production skills (quality control, SOP preparation, and product certification), facilitation of modern production equipment, training on business management and simple financial recording, as well as training on digital marketing strategies and product branding. The program was implemented in a participatory manner by involving female KUBE members, the village government, and Universitas Riau students through the MBKM program. The results showed an increase in production capacity of approximately 30%, the establishment of more organized financial records, and the adoption of digital marketing strategies that expanded market reach. Socially, women’s roles in KUBE were strengthened through the involvement of the Women Farmers’ Group as suppliers of raw materials, which contributed to greater independence and family economic contribution. Economically, KUBE members gained higher income and improved competitiveness of cassava-based products, a local specialty of Kuok.
