Abstract

Abstract

Marana river estuary and its surrounding coastal area have been converted into extensive fishpond. This muddy environment with abundant fish in shallow waters, mangroves and Nypa palm attracts various species of birds to forage for food. This area also visited by migratory birds. However, avifauna in this area still poorly studied. Based on this, research on abundance, diversity of bird species and its conservation status was conducted. The aim of this study was to determine the abundance, ecological index and conservation status/protection status of bird species in coastal and estuary of Marana River, Maros Regency. Totally, six stations were set up in three different habitat types. Two stations were placed in the mangrove area around the mouth of the river, two stations in the pond area next to the river and two stations in the middle of the river that entered further inland. Data was collected using the point count method, with 3 replicates of different observation points set up randomly at each station. Each point has a circular observation area with a radius of 50m. The distance between observation points is 300m with a bird watching time of 20 minutes at each observation point. Bird species outside the observation area were also recorded but not counted. From the observations, a total of 22 bird species from 14 families were recorded from all stations. Most of the bird species dominated by waterbirds and open country specialized birds i.e: Whiskered Tern (Dara-laut Kumis), Glossy Swiftlet (Walet Sapi) and Little Egret (Kuntul Kecil). From ecological index analysis, bird community in all stations is categorized as stable, with moderate diversity, low dominance and high eveness index except for station 2 which is mostly dominated by Whiskered Tern. All bird species conservation status is categorized as Least Concern (LC) by IUCN. Little Egret (Kuntul Kecil), Cattle Egret (Kuntul Kerbau) and Great Egret (Kuntul Besar) are included in appendix III CITES. Furthermore, four shorebird species: Far Eastern Curlew (Gajahan Timur), Eurasian Whimbrel (Gajahan Pengala), Whiskered Tern (Dara-laut Kumis) and White-winged Tern (Dara-laut Sayap Putih) are protected by the Indonesian Government. It is concluded that bird communities in study sites are stable and Marana estuary can still support bird life, especially for migratory and protected bird species.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Sicyopus zosterophorus (Gobiidae) has a habitat in clear and fast-flowing rivers. This fish species is found in several rivers in Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi, one of which is the Bohi River. Studies on the type of food S. zosterophorus in the Bohi River have never been carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research that aims to determine the type of food S. zosterophorus in nature as important information for life history and feeding in controlled habitats. This research was carried out from December 2019 to January 2020. The fishing was done using a scoop net by snorkeling to get fish at the bottom of the river. The fish obtained were then preserved using 5% formalin and then taken to the laboratory for identification of digestive tract contents. Data on the composition and percentage of types of food in the digestive tract were processed using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the contents of the digestive tract of S. zosterophorus were dominated by insects (74%), crustaceans (7%), plants (5%), and phytoplankton (3%). The contents of the digestive tract were not identified as much as 11%. Based on this, S. zosterophorus in the Bohi River is categorized as stenophagic and is a carnivorous fish, especially insectivorous and phytobenthic eaters. This research can be used as a basis for providing natural food for S. zosterophorus in aquaculture. Keywords: Goby fish, insectivorous, phytobenthic, stenophagic

Abstract

The existence of mangrove in coast areas have both ecologic and physical important functions.  Mangrove is a high productive ecosystem. Litters from fallen leaves and twigs are organic sources for macrozoobenthic life.  The aim of this research was to determine the response of macrozoobenthics on total organic matter content and other chemical-physico characters of sediments due to differences in mangrove conditions. This research was conducted from May to September 2016 in Sub-district of Ampallas, Distric of Mamuju, Province of West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Sediments in 20 cm2 transects were collected using small shovel to obtain the macrozoobenthic samples. The sediments contained macrozoobenthics were sieved using a 1 mm mesh size sieve net. Four sampling sites were chosen, each to represent areas with no mangroves, low, medium, and high densities.  The total of organic matter samples were collected using 2 inch diameter of PVC pipe cores, which were analyzed further using Loss by Ignition method.  Besides total of organic matter, several parameters (i.e. redox potential, sediment pH, salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen) were measured.  The results showed that gastropods dominated the existed macrozoobenthics.  Gastropods and oligochaete lived in greater amounts in high mangrove density site with higher organic matter content and fine substrate. Keywords: mangroves, macrozoobenthics, organic matter, Distric of Mamuju

Abstract

Penja fish belong to the group of goby fish that migrate amphidromously and consist of various species with varying migration periods. In their life cycle, some species experience changes in shape (metamorphosis) and changes in body color caused by changes in habitat and eating habits, namely from planktivore when they are at sea turning into herbivore and becoming benthic organisms when in rivers. The time period of penja fish migration has a correlation with the occurrence of a new moon phase accompanied by rain. The silting of the river and development in the river area without a fish migration route will cut off the migration path for the amphidromous goby species, in addition, the phenomenon of drought in every dry season also threatens the existence of freshwater ichthyofauna.
