Abstract

This study deals with the discourse marker in Joko Widodo’s Speeches in KTT APEC CHINA in 2015. This study attampted to investigate the domaint elements of Discourse Marker of Joko Widodo speeches in KTT APEC in CHINA 2015, the type and how discourse marker are coded in the president Joko Widodo specches in KTT APEC in CHINA 2015. The study was conducted by quantitative design. The data in this study were the vidio of JOKO widodo’s Speeches in KTT APEC in China 2015 which got 102 clauses from the vidio. The clauses were transcribed in order to be analyzed. In relation to the problems of the study, the purpose of the study is to find the types of discourse markers and to elaborate the reasons of occurrence of discourse markers used the speech based on situational context. And this research was using descriptive qualitative method. From the data analysis and findings, there were four categories from discourse markers found in Joko Widodo speeches they are interpersonal category, referential categories, structural category and cognitive category,  and the dominant category found was cognitive category.Keywords: Discourse Markers, Speeches and Types, KTT APEC

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining code switching in Sarah Sechan talk show program on NET TV. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of code switching occurring in the talk show, the process of code switching, and the reasons for code switching in the talk show. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The source of data was Sarah Sechan talk show. There were five episodes of Sarah Sechan talk show as the data of this study. The technique of data collection was documentary technique and the instrument of data collection was recorder. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings showed that all types of code switching occurred in Sarah Sechan talk show with different proportion. The most dominant type occurring in the talk show is intra sentential switchingThe processes of code switching occurred in Sarah Sechan talk show are insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization. Reasons for using code switching were expressing solidarity, ethnic identity marker, changing the topic, switching for affective meaning, and emphasizing the meaning. Keywords: Code Switching, Types of Code Switching, Processes of Code Switching, Reasons for Code Switching, Talk Show

Abstract

This research dealt with politeness strategy used in the movie The Silence of the Lamb. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate the kinds of politeness strategies used by the antagonist and protagonist characters when they expressed their utterances in the film “The Silence of the Lambs”, (2)  to explain how the strategies used by the two characters, (3) to know the reasons of those characters in employing politeness strategies. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The source of data of this study was the movie. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) Based on the categories of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson, all categories of politeness strategies were found in this film. (2) The bald on record strategy was used for eight times by the antagonist, while the protagonist used it for five times. (3) The use of politeness strategy by the antagonist and protagonist was aimed to perform acts based on J. R. Searle’s theory, namely representatives, directives, commissives and declaration. Abstract

There are two problems proposed in this paper, i.e. about (1) the transitivity systems elements that characterize English for SMK 1 Textbook for Grade X, and (2) the relevance of transitivity elements (Process and Circumstance) with the English teaching and learning processes. By using the theory of SFL, it can be described (as qualitative descriptive method of research), that in all Units of reading texts in the English textbook there were 238 clauses selected methodologically to be analyzed. In these clauses, all Process Types can be found with varieties of the usage. It is found that in all units of reading texts, Material Process types was the dominant type used, i.e. (48.6%), followed by Relational Process type (27,2%), Mental Process (18.6%) Verbal Process type 8,4%, and Behavioral and Existentional 7.0% each respectively. Related to the circumstance, the dominant one is Circumstance of Location (Time and Place = 37.7%). For the participant, it is related to the process exists in the text, i.e. Actor for Participant 1 and Goal for Paticipant 2.Keyword: Transitivity Systems Analysis, Textbook, Vocational High School

Abstract

Television advertisement has a promotional function as a medium to advertise a product. It implicitly persuades people to create demand of a product that is being advertised. Implicit meaning can be studied with semiotic; it is the theory and study of sign, symbol, and signification as communicative behavior, especially as elements of language or other system of communication. This study is aimed to identify the types of signs of milk television advertisements. The writer focuses on four advertisements of milk products 'Bear Brand Sterilized advertisements, which published on television media since June 2009-2015. The methodology used in this research is qualitative method and the researcher uses semiotics approach of Charles Sanders Peirce. The data of this analysis are phrases, sentences, images, objects, and colors in each advertisement. The writer identifies some signs in each scene of the advertisement. The data are found in 25 in the bear brand advertisements. The result of this study shows that each scene contains signs such as icon,index, and symbol. There are 22 of icons, 8 indexes, and 26 symbols. In the analysis using Charles Sanders Pierce Triadic theory, the writer found that in every advertisement uses signs which consist of representament, object, and interpretant. The combination of the three signs will deliver the meaning of the selected object (advertisement) to the reader. The result of the study shows that the three kinds of signs are used to create clear meanings and both of them have a strong relationship in delivering messages of the products.Keywords: Television Advertisement, Semiotic, Icon, Index, Symbol

Abstract

This research dealt with the students’ reception on the intellectual and emotional domain of novel which entitled “Negeri Lima Menara” from gender perspective. The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate students’ reception of the novel at the intellectual aspect from gender perspective. (2) to investigate students reception of the novel at the emotional aspect from gender perspective. The data were obtained from questionnaire and the source of data were 32 students 16 male and 16 female from two classes students at second semester of language and arts faculty at state university of Medan, By applying purposive sampling. The research design of this study applied descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by administering questionnaire. The results of data analysis in general were (1) Male students were more good reception in both intellectual domain and emotional domain. Furthermore, the points of intellectual domain (respectively-%) were Structure 40.625%, Language 43.75%, Theme 50%, Tempo 15.625%, and the points of emotional domain (respectively-%) were Interest 43.75%, Authenticity 34.375%, the ability to belief 40.625% contained on the novel.However, female students’ was higher in 2 points both in intellectual domain and emotional domain. Furthermore, the two points of intellectual domain (respectively-%) were Characterization 50%, Plot 43.75% and the 2 points of emotional domain (respectively-%) Involvement 46.875%, Joy 43.75% contained on the novel. On the other hand both male and female have an equal point of emotional domain (respectively-%) they were Emotion 43.75%, but male had high score than female, male score 65 meanwhile female score 63 at the emotion point of emotional domain. Implication: male is more rationally meanwhile female is more emotionally. Keywords: students’ reception, intelectual, emotional domain, gender’s perspective.

Abstract

A number of ecological linguists, using critical discourse analysis, have found that between culture, language, and biodiversity has a correlation. One of them is Suku Anak Dalam or called Orang Rimba. Suku Anak Dalam is a semi nomadic ethnic group living in National Park of Bukit Dua Belas, Jambi Province. The language is indigenous and endangered so that it must be documented. The speakers of a language will lose their language; even language is often regarded as a symbol of tribal identity or national identity. In the midst of the widespread use and dissemination of foreign vocabulary, some regions still maintain the cultural vocabulary that characterizes the region. This research was conducted for the reason of collecting the lexical items from Suku Anak Dalam language into a dictionary. Abstract

At present time, millions of people work in the maritime field worldwide. Of the millions people, they come from different countries with a diverse background with different level of English proficiencies which they bring from their home countries. That is why; the mastery of standard maritime communication system is a must. To be able to communicate correctly and properly in the Maritime World and industry, the ships’ crews must understand and master the typical features of Maritime English. This paper focuses and reviews an account of the typical features of Maritime English communication in terms of 1) Maritime English spelling system in communication, 2) maritime symbols and their meanings, and 3) typical expressions. The research dealt with Metaphor Sentences. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the translation strategies of metaphors are used in The Magic of Thinking Big and (2) to describe the translation strategies maintain metaphors in The Magic of Thinking Big. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were sentences. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) The metaphor in The magic of Thinking Big were translated by applying six translation strategies, namely: word for word Translation (5.3%) lieral translation (4.3%), faithful translation (57.5%), Free translation (3.2%), communicative translation (30.5%) and discursive creation was found (2.2%). (2) The metaphors are maintained that found in the Magic of Thinking Big are original metaphors turned into another original metaphors, stock metaphors turned into another stock metaphors, adapted metaphors turned into adapted metaphors, dead metaphors turned into dead metaphors, original metaphor turned into stock metaphor, stock metaphor turned into original metaphor, meanwhile, 10 original metaphors and 1 dead metaphor are no longer classified as metaphors. Language has special characteristic that is metaphor sentences, therefore in the case of translating of metaphor sentences in which their concept in unknown for readers, the translator often faces the problems to find out the translation strategies to translate metaphor in a source language (SL) and how the metaphor sentences are maintained in the target language (TL).Keywords : Metaphor, Translation Strategies, Maintain Metaphor
