Abstract

Skin diseases can get natural therapies from medicinal plant-based products. In this study, a topical cream was formulated from ethanol extract of Acacia sieberiana, beeswax and Vitellaria paradoxa (shea) butter. GC-MS characterization with co-injection of the topical cream revealed Stearic acid (31.43%), Palmitic acid (23.15%), Oleic acid (21.44%) and Linoleic acid (16.20%) as the major components. Seven phenolic conpounds were identified and quantified by HPLC- DAD and Ferulic acid (12.81±0.26 mg/g) was the most abundant. The cream showed good antioxidant properties evaluated through ?-Carotene-linoleic acid assay, DPPH• radical scavenging, ABTS•+ assay, CUPRAC assay, and metal chelating assay. The cream had higher activity in the DPPH• assay (IC50 = 32.10±0.84 µg/mL), ABTS•+ assay (IC50 = 22.49±0.62 µg/mL) and CUPRAC assay (IC50 = 49.27±0.79 µg/mL) than ?-Tocopherol. The antioxidant effects are an indication that the cream can reduce oxidative stress on the skin including aging, carcinogenesis and inflammation. At 100 µg/mL, the topical cream showed tyrosinase inhibition of 48.23±0.87% regarded as relatively good compared to the standard tyrosinase inhibitor kojic acid, which showed 79.50±0.32% inhibition at the same concentration. The cosmetic cream was able to inhibit the melanin production rate-limiting enzyme, tyrosinase, indicating that it can control hyperpigmentation and skin spots.

Abstract

This paper presents an artificial intelligence direct torque control (DTC) method for an electric vehicle (EV) drive system. The architecture of the proposed electric vehicle is that of four wheels each with an induction motor (IM). A comparative study of the different torque and speed controllers proposed in this paper is made. An electronic differential is used to control the speed of each wheel as well as a variable master-slave control (VMSC) for the management of the magnetic quantities because the motors on the same side are fed by the same converter. This study allows highlights the performance of the propulsion system in terms of dynamics and safety of the vehicle and better stability. The different controllers are implemented by the MATLAB/Simulink software and the simulation results obtained show better flexibility in the control of the vehicle. It is worth noting that direct torque control with fuzzy logic (DTFC) performs better than DTC associated with neural networks in terms of a time reduction increase of 1.47%, an overshoot of less than 5.33, and a static steady-state error close to zero.

Abstract

Inappropriate use of antibiotics alongside improper waste/wastewater disposal can contribute to the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance. This research aimed to assess the knowledge, practices, and patterns of antibiotic usage among animal farmers in Calabar Metropolis. Employing a descriptive cross-sectional approach, a structured questionnaire was utilized to elicit information from 137 animal farmers. Data were analysed using SPSS version 25, with Chi-square statistics being employed to ascertain associations between different variables. The findings indicated a high level of knowledge regarding antibiotic use and the repercussions following its misuse on the environment, with 74.5% exhibiting high levels of knowledge. Majority (92.7%) of the respondents used antibiotics for various purposes in the farm. About 55% of respondents who used antibiotics had training on antibiotics use. Majority (79.6%) of the respondents had poor waste/wastewater disposal practices. Associations were found between farmers’ knowledge level on antibiotic resistance and level of antibiotics use (p=0.031). Moderate antibiotic use was more among farmers with high knowledge level. An association was also found between farmers’ training on antibiotics use and farmers’ level of antibiotics use (p=0.043). Mandatory and targeted training for animal production farmers on proper and judicious antibiotic use is expedient to safeguard public health.

Abstract

The learning and mastering of programming language syntax pose a significant challenge for non-computing students. Most teaching approaches and existing educational tools often fail to address this issue. Therefore, this paper introduces an interactive learning environment called PyLe, specifically designed for introductory programming in Python programming courses. We evaluated the effectiveness of PyLe on first-year students at North-West University in South Africa and the University of Yaoundé 1, Cameroon. Firstly, the study conducts an experiment to assess the effect of PyLe on the time taken to solve a problem and the response quality. Secondly, PyLe’s usability and its instructional value were evaluated by the students and the instructors, respectively. The results from post-test method and a quantitative survey indicate that PyLe improves students’ ability to learn and master program syntax and has a high usability rate. Moreover, feedback from students and teachers affirms PyLe’s potential to address programming syntax challenges for non-computing students. However, the analyses revealed no real relationship between the time taken to complete a task in PyLe and the quality of the solution. This study contributes to improving the teaching and learning of computer programming, which has been considered difficult for both computing and non-computing students.

Abstract

Suicidal thoughts often serve as a precursor to suicide, which is a leading cause of death globally. In the Philippines, social work service users frequently present suicidal thoughts as an area of concern, yet the absence of standardized protocols and supportive systems complicates the role of Filipino social workers. Guided by Rolfe et al.’s Critical Reflection Model, this paper contemplates a social work helping process with a service user living with passive suicidal thoughts. Using a single case presentation, the paper illustrates the application of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed social work counseling as an approach. Preliminary observations from the case suggest notable reductions in distress levels and underscore the importance of adapting and replicating the approach across diverse contexts. Additionally, the paper offers relevant practice insights drawn from the experience. It concludes with recommendations for advancing practice and future research in this critical area.

Abstract

This study aims to examine whether the internal factor (cash flow) and external factor (leverage) affect firm value through profitability as a moderating variable in technology sector companies 2018-2021. The method used in this research was a deductive approach, quantitative types, and descriptive characteristics. The number of technology sector companies listed on the IDX is 27 companies which the amount of sample that is selected by using purposive sampling technique is 5 companies. The SmartPLS 3.0 application was used in this study to make it easier for researchers to analyze data. The conclusion obtained show that internal (cash flow) and external (leverage) factors do not affect firm value through profitability as a moderating variable. However, researchers can prove that external factor (leverage) can affect profitability which is evidenced by the p-values in the hypothesis test, namely 0,010<0,05 which indicates that external factor (leverage) have a significant effect on profitability. Keywords: Internal Factor (Cash Flow), External Factor (Leverage), Profitability, and Firm Value.
