Abstract

The control of hybrid systems is a considerable challenge for the energy supply to consumers. For this purpose, this study implemented an intelligent control for a hybrid system connected to the electrical grid to meet the energy demand of a building in the city of Douala, Cameroon. In this work, an intelligent management system using fuzzy logic is proposed to overcome the challenges of this multi-source integration. The proposed method based on a fuzzy logic controller makes it possible to optimize the performance of the energy sources used with a coordination system. Thus, it makes it possible to adjust in real time the system control process based on climatic conditions and the characteristics of the storage devices in order to provide an adequate adaptive control strategy. Furthermore, this system effectively balances the energy supply from all sources. MATLAB/Simulink software and real building data are used to simulate the proposed intelligent management strategy. The results obtained indicate that energy is efficiently supplied to consumers with efficiency of 98% and reduction of fuel consumption of 45% based on the availability of the sources, thus demonstrating the benefits of the control strategy based on fuzzy logic for balanced system operation.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a new mathematical model describing the dynamics of overweight and obesity and their impact on diabetes and hypertension. In constructing the model, we consider negative and positive interactions among individuals with normal weight, overweight, and obesity, as well as social factors influencing overweight and hypertension diagnoses. As a novel contribution to transmission dynamics, we interpret the basic reproduction number from two perspectives: negative and positive interactions. Focusing on parameters linked to social factors and their health impact, we present theoretical results characterizing their influence on the basic reproduction number and compute corresponding sensitivity indices. Additionally, we perform a global sensitivity analysis of model parameters using first- and total-order Sobol’ indices with various methods and sampling techniques, concluding that parameters associated with social factors are among the most influential. We conduct computational simulations of the basic reproduction number and model’s compartments to examine the influence of social-factor parameters on overweight and hypertension. Our findings indicate the need to explore strategies to prevent the rise of overweight, obesity, and diabetes in the population. Social factors associated with overweight and hypertension diagnosis have a substantial impact on the progression of these dynamics. Recognizing this influence enables the identification of the most vulnerable groups and the design of more precise and effective interventions.

Abstract

In recent years, several researchers have investigated the challenges of accessibility in e-government portals and have contributed to many proposals for improvements. However, no comprehensive review has been conducted on this topic. This study aimed to survey and synthesize the published work on the accessibility of e-government portals for people with disabilities. We carried out a review using a systematic mapping study (SMS) to compile previous findings and provide comprehensive state-of-the-art. The SMS collected studies published between January 2000 and March 2025 were identified using an automated search in five known databases. In total, 112 primary studies were selected. The results showed a notable increase in interest and research activities related to accessibility in e-government portals. Journals are the most widely used publication channel; studies have mainly focused on evaluation research and show a commitment to inclusivity. “AChecker” and “Wave validator” are the most used accessibility evaluation tools. The findings also identified various accessibility guidelines, with the most frequently referenced being the web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG). Based on this study, several key implications emerge for researchers, and addressing them would be beneficial for researchers to advance e-government website accessibility in a meaningful way.

Abstract

The learning of computer programming comes with unique difficulties that vary among students depending on their backgrounds, learning methods, and objectives. This paper investigates the programming challenges first-year students from non-computing at the North-West University, South Africa, and computing backgrounds at the University of Dschang, Cameroon face. A questionnaire-based data collection method is utilized and categorizes participants based on their gender, age, fields of study, prior experiences in mathematics, statistics, English, and programming languages, lab use/access, learning strategies, and material preferences. The aim is to identify and analyze the student's understanding of the basic programming concepts and the specific challenges met during introductory programming modules. Analysis of the collected data shows that while a considerable percentage of non-computing students have prior experience in mathematics and English, they lack familiarity with programming. Equally, while most computing students are proficient in spoken English, they face significant challenges in programming, mathematics, and written English. Notable difficulties are experienced in grasping concepts like recursion, arrays, error handling, and function/procedure methods. Moreover, a comparative study reveals that both groups of students encounter similar challenges, however, non-computing students’ difficulties are more than their computing counterparts. This paper, therefore, suggests designing teaching methods and learning materials to specifically meet the needs of non-computer science students, and enhance their understanding and proficiency in computer programming.
