Abstract

This paper focuses on how to reduce cheating and minimize errors while automatically grading paper-based multiple-choice questions (MCQ) by making the whole process relatively fast, less expensive, more credible, and fairer especially when the number of examinees and number of questions are large. Credibility is obtained when techniques and best practices are introduced in the design process of MCQ. Fairness is obtained by personalizing evaluation through permutation of answers and questions. The distance introduced in personalization has led to the modification of the traditional automatic grading process where an application mapping the test number with its responses in the grading software is loaded automatically at each start of the grading process. On the extracted header fields, 2DFFT is applied as well as the reduction of computed coefficients to obtain the corresponding final local characteristic in the representation. The minimization of image processing errors is then obtained by training a support vector machine (SVM) for handwriting optical character recognition (OCR) using the Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset with 99.5% accuracy. The tests are carried out in several subjects at Fotso Victor University Institute of Technology (UIT) in Bandjoun and the ColTech of the University of Bamenda and teachers as well as students after investigation have confirmed that our method reduces cheating and improves the error rate during grading with fewer complaints.

Abstract

This study's examination of the impact of public debt servicing on financing costs in Nigeria from 2000 to 2022 is necessary due to the growing conversation on the burdensome nature of public debt servicing. Using a population of bilateral and multilateral loan units and the universal sampling method, the study used an ex post facto research methodology. The dependent variable was revenue retention, while the variables of emphasis were loan servicing, loans from the World Bank, the IMF, and Paris Club. Diagnostics such as regression analysis, normality test, variance inflation factor, correlation matrix, and descriptive statistics analysis were used in the investigation. The findings showed that the Paris Club loan estimate had a positive but statistically insignificant impact, the World Bank and IMF loans had a statistically significant positive impact, and the loan servicing had a statistically significant negative impact on the public. It is recommended that World Bank funds should be employed to sectors that enhance revenue, such as improving tax administration, digitizing tax records, and expanding the tax base. Again, IMF loan should be more of strengthening fiscal operations. Prudent Borrowing is strictly advocated to reduce the heavy burden of debt which Nigeria current faces.

Abstract

In the current era of the Industrial Revolution, there is a substantial increase in effluents from industrial discharges and domestic waste flowing into the sea, leading to contamination of water bodies. This includes pollutants such as heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) and microplastics, which eventually settle and contaminate sediments. Research on sediment contamination in Indonesia has been quite numerous and varied, but none has employed the scientometric method to analyze the trend of sediment contamination. Using CiteSpace, this study analyzes trends and patterns in research topics, citation frequency, and publication numbers over the past 25 years, based on co-occurrence, co-word, and co-citation analyses. The study examined 177 research articles indexed by Scopus. Findings reveal substantial international collaboration, with Indonesia leading with 167 publications, Malaysia with 19, and Japan with 15, showing a significant gap. The research spans various subject areas, including Environmental Science (111 articles), Earth and Planetary Sciences (74 articles), and Agricultural and Biological Sciences (55 articles). This study will provide a quantitative and visual overview of sediment contamination research in Indonesia, offering a comprehensive discussion of the findings.

Abstract

Bahay Pagbabago ni Apong Pilar is a community-based, church-initiated, and DDB (Dangerous Drugs Board) recognized and accredited formation shelter in San Simon, Pampanga. Using the sequential explanatory design, this study conducted surveys and focused-group discussions with 32 reformists to assess the shelter's formation program based on the reformists' standpoints. Quantitative results using Spearman's rank correlations showed that there seemed to be a significant relationship between attitude towards livelihood (ρ (2) = 6.589, sig. = 0.037*, p < 0.05) and spiritual activities (ρ (27) = 0.587**, p < 0.01), as formative components of the program, and perceived self-improvement (ρ (2) = 13.573, sig. = 0.001**, p < 0.01) during their stay in the formation shelter. It suggests that as the reformist develops a more positive attitude towards the livelihood, sports, and spiritual activities being offered at the formation center, it is also more likely that they may develop a higher sense of self-improvement.  Qualitative data yielded three general themes: (1) finding a higher purpose and deeper meaning in life through spiritually uplifting undertakings; (2) having family-oriented treatment, making them feel nothing less of their humanity; and (3) having holistic and dynamic activities, those that focus on the developmental facets. These are the elements deemed by the reformists as important, which constitute effective reintegration to their families, communities, and society.

Abstract

Abstract

In this paper, we present a mathematical model for the study of resistance to tuberculosis treatment using fractional derivatives in the Caputo sense. This model takes into account the relationship between Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes and differentiates resistance cases into MDR-TB (multidrug-resistant tuberculosis) and XDR-TB (extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis). We present the basic results associated with the model and study the behavior of the disease-free equilibrium points in the different sub-populations, TB-Only, TB-HIV/AIDS, and TB-Diabetes. We performed computational simulations for different fractional orders (α-values) using an Adams-Bashforth-Moulton type predictor-corrector PECE method. Among the results obtained, we have that the MDR-TB cases in all sub-populations decrease at the beginning of the study for the different α-values. In XDR-TB cases in the TB-Only sub-population, there is a decrease in the number of cases. XDR-TB cases in the TB-HIV/AIDS sub-population have differentiated behavior depending on α. This knowledge helps to design an effective control strategy. The XDR-TB cases in diabetics increased throughout the study period and outperformed all resistant compartments for the different α-values. We recommend special attention to the control of this compartment due to this growth.

Abstract

Abstract

This study provides a conceptual framework to analyze where the formal and informal inter-organizational interactions influence the adoption decisions of open standards inter-organizational information systems (IOIS). Based on the Internet, open standards IOIS can help companies access to broader markets and make interfirm collaboration much easier and cheaper. In spite of these benefits, open standards IOIS have not been widely adopted by companies for external connection, which leads to questions about the importance of higher openness for inter-organizational systems. We argue that the characteristics of supply chain networks are fundamental for companies' choices of IOIS. The levels of linkages and interdependence between companies will affect how companies respond to external influences as well as heat demand for broader connection or tighter integration. Personal guanxi, the informal connections between individuals, also play an important part in companies' adoption decisions, especially in Asian countries where guanxi is prevalent business culture. Combining the different theoretical perspectives, we propose a conceptual framework and several integrative propositions for the analysis of the adoption decisions of open standards IOIS in the inter-organizational context.
