Abstract

This article examines the critical role of the dimensions of Sufism represented by Sufi ulama in the public sphere (political power) state, either directly or indirectly. In Indonesian historicity, the relationship between Sufi ulama and the state has lasted centuries, even to the modern era. In political theory, there is a "descending of power" and an "ascending of power". Descending power is identical to religiopolitical power, namely power based on religion by placing Sufi scholars as representatives of the people and above the king's power. Power is interpreted as a political system that separates religion and state. This problematic relationship places Sufi ulama in a transcendent way to become part of the state both directly and remotely. Examples of ascending of power are shown clearly through the figures of Habib Lutfi bin Yahya and KH. Maimun Zubair (Mbah Maimun) is in the midst of a potential nation clash during the 2019 presidential election process. This study is based on secondary sources in related references and primary sources. The primary source is based on the thoughts of a Sufi teacher and the murshid of Majelis Shalawat Kubro, Shalawat Muhammad, and Shalawat Adlimiyah in East Java.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of Majelis Shalawat as a “new” Sufi institution that flourished in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Majelis Shalawat as another alternative to the tarekat is another option for the community because it teaches various dimensions of truth and makrifat. This following research focused on 3 (three) Majelis Shalawat, they are: (1) Majelis Shalawat Kubro (Gus Syamsu Dhuha), (2) Majelis Shalawat Muhammad (Gus Kahar), and (3) Majelis Shalawat Adlimiyah (Gus Mursyidin) in East Java. The three murshids become one unity because there is a key figure beyond them, namely KH. Muhammad Tamyiz (Mbah Tamyiz). Mbah Tamyiz connected with Sufi scholars from the 1970s to 1980s who were continued by his three successors. Secondly, it is built based on a specific Sufi education pattern, namely the strict mujahadah and riyad traditions. Thirdly, on the basis of scientific genealogy and educational patterns, which finally forming doctrines or thoughts. Abstract

As a symbol system, istighosah ritual can be categorized as a part of slametan ritual. However, substantively, it is viewed from its motif and target and also its forms of execution; there is a difference between istighosah and slametan. Slametan ritual is understood as form of syncretism of Java Islam. But, istighosah ritual is assumed as more “genuine”, as a part of traditional santri community tradition rooted from a big tradition of Islam (high Islam) in Middle East. But it is too bad that istighosah ritual has not been studied by observer elaborating study of local tradition and Islam in Indonesia. Finding of this study seems to have a shifting of orientation and also other deep meaning change which can be expressed. At the genuine concept of Istighosah, it emphasizes on two elementary aspect; (1) Target motif and (2) Form of application. Its field study shows the gradual change of “contemporary” istighosah execution starting to exit from this “track”. There is a cultural system change at the group of traditional Muslim entity. To analyze it, this research use the perspective of Geertz’s symbolic-interpretative as a theoretical framework.

Abstract

This paper examines the teaching of Wiḥdat al-Wujūd in Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in Surabaya and Bojonegoro from 2011 to the study period. As a Sufi “organization,” Majelis Shalawat under Gus Kahar and Gus Mursyidin (murshid) learned the Sufi thoughts on Ibnu ‘Arabi doctrine. This article was established on qualitative research using participatory techniques, in which the author was deeply involved in the Majelis Sahalawat. On the one side, this paper explores the Sufi education system of Gus Kahar and Gus Mursyidin from ‘lelaku’ or riyāḍah. The result of the inquiry presented a connection between the sanad and Sufi scholars in Java. On the other hand, Sufi thought in various Majelis Shalawat indicates a strong Wiḥdat al-Wujūd thought. This article argues that the thought of Wiḥdat al-Wujūd continuing living from time to time is proven by the thoughts of the two murshids in Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in East Java. These two murshids do not directly use the term Wiḥdat al-Wujūd; instead, the term aḥad or aḥadiyah is more frequent, which is synonymous with Wiḥdat al-Wujūd doctrines of Ibnu ‘Arabi. It also emphasizes that Indonesian Sufism denotes the importance of locality and cultural catharsis within Javanese Muslim’s spiritual practices.

Abstract

This paper examines and shows at the same time about Javanese Islam (Islam Nusantara) which is typical of a few Muslims in the world. The characteristic in question is a combination of Javanese culture (Javanese original religion, Hindu and Buddhist) with the intrinsic dimension of Islam itself. This combination occurs because it is bound by a red thread called mysticism, which is between Javanese mysticism and Islamic mysticism as a compound. The two conception of mysticism is because the essence of mysticism actually contains the teachings of the unity (tauhid) of God. This encounter through mysticism allows for acculturation between Javanese culture and Islam. This thesis is based on the reconstruction of the thinking of Sufi teachers in the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in Surabaya and Bojonegoro as a research base. The Sufi masters referred to were placed as sub-alternations which were prevalent in post-colonial studies. As a sub-altern, this paper is believed to better narrate the perpetrators of Islamic mysticism in understanding the dialectic between Islamic mysticism and original Javanese culture or Javanese mysticism itself. Their relations gave birth to what is called Javanese Islam which is typical in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines the rise of Islamic populism in post-truth Indonesia. It particularly discusses the proliferation of Islamic populism narratives in social media that lead to hoaxes and hate speeches which appeared in series of political elections. This article argues that there has been a similar pattern of Indonesian form of populism to that of other parts of western countries, particularly the US and the UK. Like populism in the latter two countries, the issue of “indigeneity” has generated the reproduction of post-truth narrates, ranging from false-news, hoaxes, and hate-speeches, blaiming the so-called “foreign” elements of the country. Islamist mobilisation is central to explain the proliferation of post-truth politics which cultivates tensions and divisions among society and reserves as a threat to democratic consolidation in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the fashion trends of millennial Muslim women from conservative to modern perspectives within the framework of religion in Indonesia. The backdrop of this research is the ongoing discourse between groups that argue that millennial Muslimah fashion should adhere to Islamic Sharia principles and those advocating for a more modern and stylish representation of Islamic identity to the general public. The research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) indexed in Scopus using the Watase Uake tool, Publish or Perrish, publications from international journals such as Springer and Taylor and Francis, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) technique, narrowing down from 281 articles to 16 selected as research data. Millennial Muslimah fashion in Indonesia has undergone evolution from its introduction to innovation. Initially faced with hierarchy and prohibitions, it has now transformed into a stylish trend reflecting piety, innovation, and global influences. This transformation is influenced by the conflicting paradigms of right-wing and left-wing Islam, leading towards a moderate Islamic stance. A new identity for millennial Muslimah fashion has emerged through phenomena like hijabers, hijrah groups, and pop culture, creating a style that combines Islamic values with contemporary trends.
