Abstract

Hari demi hari, Iran terus melancarkan serangan terhadap pangkalan AS, mengancam posisi AS di Timur Tengah. Sejak Revolusi Islam di Iran pada tahun 1979 yang menggulingkan monarki Iran di bawah pemerintahan Mohammad Reza Pahlavi yang diketahui mendapat tekanan imperialisme AS, hubungan Iran-AS semakin memburuk.

Abstract

Islamic  radical  movements  in Indonesia  are various.  Their slogans  about Islamic  union  are  refutable  by  heteroginities  of   groups  and  pattern  of movements. This article portrays about their variety of  movements. Broadly speaking , these groups are divided into two models. First, Islamic radical movements from their origins, such as HTI, Tarbiyah-Ikhwanul Muslimin and  Orthodox-Wahabi   Movement.  Second,  Islamic  radical  movements which have been metamor phosis, though ideologically they are in line with transnational Islamic radical movements in the Middle East. Examples of the second model are among others Front Pembela Islam (FPI), Laskar Jihad (LJ), Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI). These groups make Indonesian Islam more discursive in terms of  their contestation in gaining supports from Muslims in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines the role of two Sufi orders, the Naqshbandiya order and the Qadiriyya wa al-Naqshbandiya order, in the social and cultural transformation of Malay and Javanese Muslims in contemporary Sumatra, specifically in the Malay Riau region. Socio-political approach is employed in order to analyze the internal and external dynamics of the actors involved in the object of study. The argument presented in this article states that, the Naqshbandi order or ‘Malay Riau Muslim tarekat’ has played a vital role in the social and cultural transformation of Malay Muslims by promoting a peaceful and moderate interpretation of Islam. However, the more legalistic and rigid interpretation of Islam from Saudi Arabia has promoted the Naqshbandi order to adopt a more Shari‘a-oriented approach which has gradually eroded the spiritual essence of the order’s culture and given way to more radical Islamic beliefs in the Malay Riau region. In response, the Qadiriya wa al-Naqshbandiya order continues to represent the authentic Javanese Muslim traditions and beliefs, propagating the original heritage of Malay Islamic tradition and culture. This article found out that the ethnicity embedded in the followers of tarekat may influence the orientation of a particular sufi order.

Abstract

This article examines the historical and political dynamics between secularism and Islamism in the context of modern Turkey, with a focus on two central figures: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Atatürk, as the founder of the Republic of Turkey, established the foundations of the state based on principles of secularism and Western modernism, including the abolition of the Caliphate and reforms in law, education, and public symbols. In contrast, Erdoğan and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) have integrated Islam into national identity through policy reforms, education, and historical discourse. Drawing on perspectives from the politics of religion and political sociology, and employing conceptual frameworks such as Public Religion and Political Islam, this article adopts a qualitative research approach based on library research and Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to trace the relationship between discourse, power, and the construction of national identity, as well as the ideological dynamics between secular and religious groups in Turkey’s contemporary public sphere. The findings indicate that despite their differing approaches to religion, both Atatürk and Erdoğan employed centralized and symbolic forms of power to shape national narratives. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of state–religion relations in the politics of the modern Muslim world, offering a critical reflection on the future of democracy, pluralism, and religious freedom in Turkey.
