Abstract

Manggarai, a community in Flores, Eastern Indonesia is known for its rich culture of folk songs with unique rhythm and lyrics. There are various types of folk songs for different purposes such as traditional chants, harvest celebrations, lamentation of the dead, war anthems, children songs, and other  profane functions. When European missionaries started Catholic evangelization in Manggarai in the beginning of the 20th century, many of these folk songs were prohibited due to their use in rituals deemed idolatry. However, some missionaries saw the potential of folk songs for evangelization and empowered local artists to arrange Catholic liturgical songs based on these traditional songs. Eventually, many folk songs were adapted and transformed into Catholic hymns. This paper explores this irony through socio-historical research to understand the relationship dynamics between the Catholic Church and the Manggaraian culture. This research has discovered that there is a dialectical encounter between Catholicism and the Manggaraian culture which has shaped a unique identity of the Catholic Church in Manggarai

Abstract

This article explores the position of customary law before state law and Catholic religious law regarding marriage in Mangggarai, Flores, Indonesia. This study applied a critical analytic approach. This study found that the legal position of Manggarai adat concerning marriage is weaker and tends to be marginalized. It happened because state law explicitly Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage merely accepting the legality of marriage based on religious law and not customary law. Meanwhile, religious law, in this case, Catholicism, does not provide space for customary law in matters of marital legality. As a result, many married couples who have been bound their marriage according to customary law experienced injustice as their marriage was considered illegitimate according to religious and state law. However, this research found many positive contributions of customary law to the process, legality, and integrity of marriage. Therefore, this study recommends that the Indonesian Marriage Law and Catholic Religious Law need to accommodate customary law in marriage, taking into account human rights and justice principles. Both laws need to be revised so that they can place local customary law in an equal position. Keywords: Marriage; Manggarai; Customary law; Religious law; State law Hukum Adat di hadapan Hukum Agama dan Negara Tentang Pernikahan Di Manggarai, Indonesia Timur AbstrakArtikel ini mengeskplorasi posisi hukum adat di hadapan hukum negara dan hukum agama Katolik mengenai perkawinan di Mangggarai, Flores, Indonesia.

Abstract

This article explores the adaptation and modification of the tradition of woni in Manggarai culture, Flores, in encounters with Muslims. Before the Manggarai people met the Muslim community, the tradition of woni was used to honor clans that had certain ceki. Ceki can be compared to the concept of totems in classical anthropological studies, namely animals or plants that are considered sacred by a particular community and become symbols and identities of a clan. Due to its sacred nature, the animal or plant is treated as taboo. In encounters with Muslims, Manggarai Catholics practiced the tradition of woni by providing halal food. This is also done to maintain inter-religious harmony. However, along with the growing awareness of the concept of halal, accompanied by a movement to purify the teachings of Islam and the rise of identity politics, the question of food provided by non-Muslims becomes increasingly sensitive and even crucial. This factor encourages Catholics to adopt variations in practicing the tradition of woni. Employing an ethnographic approach, this study found seven models of adaptation to the tradition of woni practiced by Manggarai Catholics today. The more rigid the Muslim community practices the concept of halal, the higher the adaptation of the Manggarai Catholics to conform to the Muslim standards. Conversely, the easier the practice of Muslims regarding halal food, the model of adaptation by the Manggarai Catholics may become lesser.

Abstract

This study explores the perspective of women in Manggarai, Flores Island in Indonesia, and the communaltraditional concept of bride-wealth as a symbol of respect for women. This study uses a qualitative approach by interviewing forty women, both married and unmarried. The respondents were asked their opinion regarding their imagination about bride-wealth and its influence on their courtship, engagement, wedding, and married life. The results indicated the presence of a gap between the social imagination of bride-wealth and the women’s true experience. Most respondents stated how bride-wealth had strained their relationship and become a source of worry. The study therefore argues that bride-wealth as a sign of respect for women in Manggarai is merely a social imagination ingrained into the women’s expectations. The study also indicates that education has changed the status of women and enables them to be independent.

Abstract

This study explores the relations between Catholics and Muslims in Manggarai based on their different perspectives on pork being served in communal dining settings. Pigs carry significant meaning for people in Manggarai as a sacrificial animal, a symbol of culture and belief, which is why pork has been served as the main course at various celebrations. It is common for a Muslim family to provide pig at certain rituals, notwithstanding the fact that they will not eat it. To cater to Muslim families, Catholic families have a tradition called woni, whereby they serve their Muslim guests a pork-free ‘special menu’. This tradition, however, has become less popular over the past few years because of its sensitive and conflicting nature. Through a socio-historic approach, this study argues that food can be a medium to both strengthen and sever inter-faith relations. This includes a closer look at a new dakwah movement, the politics of identity, religious conflicts, majority-minority tensions in Indonesia and abroad are also key factors that can affect Catholic-Muslim relations in Manggarai.

Abstract

Migration is one of important issues in the Manggaraians' life. Their migration from Manggarai to various regions in Indonesia has made subtantial impacts on Manggaraian society. Over a long period of time, they have transformed from an agrarian society into an industrial society. This socioeconomic shift has become one of recurrent themes in Manggaraian popular songs. Two of the songs featuring this theme are “Lelak Loce Renda” written by Felix Edon and “Hemong Beo” written by Yasintus S.A. Jaar. Two questions that the present study intends to answer are, what factors encourage Manggaraian people to migrate out of their home region according to the lyrics of the abovementioned two songs? and how do they perceive migration as part of their socioculturalral realities? The answers to these questions are developed using a sociocultural perspective based on a theoretical concept posited by Everett E.Lee named pull and push factors. The study has led to the conclusion that the factors that has motivated the Manggaraians to migrate out of their home region thus far can be grouped into "push" factors and "pull" factors. The greatest push factor is found in a Manggaraian cultural value called goet-goet because of which they see migrating for better future is a respectable decision. The greatest pull factor is the expectation that the places to which they want to migrate offer more economic opportunities than those available in their hometown or home villages.

Abstract

The people of Gendang Rejeng are potentially at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes due to their unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits linked to their traditional practices. There are efforts to identify the potential risk of type 2 diabetes and carry out preventive and promotive measures based on local potentials. The efforts include: 1) health check-ups; 2) diabetes screening; 3) health education; and 4) discussion with community leaders on adapting traditional practices to be more health-friendly. Through the study we discovered that out of 29 people of Gendang Rejeng that had been screened for diabetes, 62.1% had a low risk, 13.8% had a higher risk, and the remaining 24.1% had a moderate risk of diabetes. There is a need to study local potentials and traditional elements which can be incorporated into the efforts to reduce the risk of diabetes and prevent other health complication. Ginger is an example of one of the local potentials that can be utilized for consumption to improve the health of the people of Rejeng

Abstract

Religious education has been one of most controversial problems debated in the drafting of laws relation to education and religion in the history of Indonesia. Since the establishment of the nation, the position of religious education in school has been questioned. This debate arose in particular because many private schools organized by religious communities, institutions and foundations, especially the Christians/Catholics, only gave Christian/Catholic religious education to all the students, including to the Muslims. This research explores the social and political context of this issue and specifically looks at its practices in the contemporary era on one of the Catholic campuses in Flores. This study used a qualitative approach by combining text and context analysis. Specifically for field data obtained by in-depth interviews and FGDs on a number of Catholic school organizers, school principals, teachers and non-Catholic students who take part in Catholic religious studies. This study found that when the issue of religious instruction in schools was discussed, the debate should not only be directed at what religious lessons were given to students but rather on what religious lessons students should receive from any religion that could help students to be able to overcome the problems of society, nation and state specifically in the context of pluralism.
