Abstract

Women workers in the entertainment sector, such as pubs, are particularly vulnerable to discriminatory treatment and stigmatization from society. This issue is also prevalent among women in Borong. This study explores the community's views in Borong, East Manggarai, regarding their perceptions of women pub workers through the lens of Karol Wojtyla's philosophy. Utilizing a qualitative method, data was collected through in-depth interviews with community members. The community's perspectives from the field research were then analyzed in the context of Wojtyla's philosophical thoughts on persona. The study found that women workers in Borong's pub entertainment sector do experience societal stigmatization. The most common stigma involves labeling them as "tool women," and categorizing them as "heavy equipment" or "light equipment." This stigmatization is highly detrimental to these women. According to Wojtyla, negative stigmatization contradicts the concept of humans as unique, valuable, and precious individuals. Labeling humans as "tools" opposes the idea of humans as individuals who embody personal subjectivity. Humans, as persons, are not objects, as in the cosmological view, but are someone, based on the personalistic view. In conclusion, the stigmatization of women as tools diminishes their dignity as unique and valuable individuals. This study recommends that citizens be educated to develop solidarity and sensitivity towards human dignity. They should become individuals who respect other human beings. The stigmatization of viewing women as tools must be eradicated to uphold the noble dignity of humans. Everyone needs to learn solidarity with all, including those considered weak.

Abstract

This study explores the relations between Catholics and Muslims in Manggarai based on their different perspectives on pork being served in communal dining settings. Pigs carry significant meaning for people in Manggarai as a sacrificial animal, a symbol of culture and belief, which is why pork has been served as the main course at various celebrations. It is common for a Muslim family to provide pig at certain rituals, notwithstanding the fact that they will not eat it. To cater to Muslim families, Catholic families have a tradition called woni, whereby they serve their Muslim guests a pork-free ‘special menu’. This tradition, however, has become less popular over the past few years because of its sensitive and conflicting nature. Through a socio-historic approach, this study argues that food can be a medium to both strengthen and sever inter-faith relations. This includes a closer look at a new dakwah movement, the politics of identity, religious conflicts, majority-minority tensions in Indonesia and abroad are also key factors that can affect Catholic-Muslim relations in Manggarai.

Abstract

This article explores the position of customary law before state law and Catholic religious law regarding marriage in Mangggarai, Flores, Indonesia. This study applied a critical analytic approach. This study found that the legal position of Manggarai adat concerning marriage is weaker and tends to be marginalized. It happened because state law explicitly Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage merely accepting the legality of marriage based on religious law and not customary law. Meanwhile, religious law, in this case, Catholicism, does not provide space for customary law in matters of marital legality. As a result, many married couples who have been bound their marriage according to customary law experienced injustice as their marriage was considered illegitimate according to religious and state law. However, this research found many positive contributions of customary law to the process, legality, and integrity of marriage. Therefore, this study recommends that the Indonesian Marriage Law and Catholic Religious Law need to accommodate customary law in marriage, taking into account human rights and justice principles. Both laws need to be revised so that they can place local customary law in an equal position. Keywords: Marriage; Manggarai; Customary law; Religious law; State law Hukum Adat di hadapan Hukum Agama dan Negara Tentang Pernikahan Di Manggarai, Indonesia Timur AbstrakArtikel ini mengeskplorasi posisi hukum adat di hadapan hukum negara dan hukum agama Katolik mengenai perkawinan di Mangggarai, Flores, Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of interfaith relations and religious tolerance among students and lecturers in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia—a pluralistic region known for its strong communal values and peaceful coexistence. The research aims to uncover how everyday interfaith interactions, embedded in local traditions, contribute to maintaining religious harmony amidst global trends of rising extremism and polarisation. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 961 respondents across 47 universities through a structured questionnaire. Statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA, were conducted to explore patterns of interfaith engagement, negative experiences, and exclusivist attitudes. Findings indicate a high frequency of positive interreligious interactions and minimal negative experiences such as discrimination or exclusion. Both students and lecturers strongly reject religious exclusivism and violence, with lecturers demonstrating slightly higher tolerance levels. Based on these insights, the study introduces the NTT Interfaith Pluralism Model, which comprises four core principles: interpersonal proximity, cultural anchoring, mutual visibility, and educational responsibility. These principles reflect how religious harmony in NTT is sustained through daily practices, local wisdom, and the role of educators as moral exemplars. The study offers practical implications for fostering inclusive religious environments, especially in multi-faith societies across the Global South. Rather than focusing solely on policy or formal dialogues, this model highlights the power of informal social interaction and community-embedded ethics. The originality of this research lies in its context-sensitive approach and contribution to understanding pluralism in peaceful settings, offering a scalable and replicable framework for other plural societies.

Abstract

The Church as the People of God presupposes the active engagement of every member, especially within local communities such as parishes and stations. Women, as integral members of the Church, are likewise called to participate fully in parish life. This descriptive study examines the role of women in church ministry at the Maximilianus Maria Kolbe Parish specifically at the Landonanga Station in the Diocese of Ruteng by investigating the service tasks they perform, the significance of their ministries, parish responses to their contributions, how they understand their service as members of the People of God, and the sources of support that sustain their work. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and document analysis. The findings reveal that women serve in parish and station leadership as committee members, although they have not yet assumed the highest council leadership position. They contribute across various parish commissions and engage in all five dimensions of church ministry liturgy, kerygma, diakonia, coinsonia, and martyria. Their service is positively received and acknowledged by both church authorities and the laity, yet they encounter challenges such as patriarchal cultural norms and the burden of dual responsibilities. The study concludes that while women already play a vital role in church ministry and enjoy considerable support, they continue to face significant obstacles. This research thus enriches our understanding of women's contributions to local church life, highlighting both the enablers and barriers that shape their ministry.
