Abstract

Abstract

Financial Distress (FD) is a critical stage requiring an accurate early warning system. Previous studies identify profitability (Return on Equity - ROE) and Corporate Governance (CG) as key determinants. However, gaps exist regarding CG's weakening effectiveness under pressure and the challenging interpretation of high profitability in the Indonesian context. This study aims to examine the effect of the Corporate Governance Disclosure Index (CGDI) and ROE on FD probability. The methodology employs Logistic Regression on 256 companies from the Cyclical Industry (2023–2024). Variables and measures utilized include: FD as the binary dependent variable (Springate S-Score), CGDI and ROE as an independent.  The model was found to be simultaneously significant in predicting FD, yet the Hosmer and Lemeshow Test indicated the model is not fully fitted. Individually, CGDI has no significant effect on FD. This finding supports the view that formal CG mechanisms lose monitoring effectiveness under financial pressure (distress), often acting as mere formal legitimacy (Legitimacy Theory). Conversely, ROE has a significant and positive effect on FD probability. This counter-intuitive finding is interpreted as illusory profitability or earnings management due to strong managerial incentives (Agency Theory). High ROE becomes a misleading signal, reinforcing that profitability interpretation is a major issue within the Indonesian distress context. Consequently, the findings highlight the imperative for market participants to shift analytical focus toward underlying cash flow and liquidity indicators, while demonstrating the need for internal CG mechanisms beyond mere disclosure to effectively mitigate financial distress risk in the Indonesian market environment.

Abstract

MSMEs play a crucial role in Indonesia’s economy and have demonstrated resilience during the pandemic. However, despite the issuance of SAK EMKM to facilitate financial reporting for MSMEs, many MSMEs in Kabupaten Aceh Barat still lack a proper understanding of these standards. This research aims to analyze the influence of educational background, business size, and the provision of information and socialization on MSME actors’ understanding of SAK EMKM implementation. Using survey methods and multiple linear regression analysis, the results reveal that educational background and the provision of the information and socialization have significant impacts on MSME actors’ understanding. However, business size does not have a significant effect. These findings highlight the importance of more effective education and socialization for MSME actors to enhance their ability to prepare financial statements in accordance with the applicable standards.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is a trait that can be cultivated through social roles and experiences, reflecting the inherent entrepreneurial characteristics in individuals and fosters innovation. In Indonesia, vocational education aims to develop skilled human resources at the secondary education level (UU No. 20 of 2003). Vocational schools (SMK) are intended to produce productive, creative, and independent individuals who can efficiently utilize available resources. Aceh Barat Regency ranks tenth out of 23 regencies in Aceh Province in educational success, measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). Despite this, poverty remains above 20%. SMKs can potentially increase HDI and reduce poverty by equipping students with specific skills. The creative outputs of SMK students can form the basis of small industries in West Aceh. Therefore, it is crucial to motivate and invest in vocational education to foster young entrepreneurs. To become entrepreneurs, students need to understand business language, particularly accounting. Vocational education should integrate basic business skills such as accounting, especially in engineering fields, to prepare students for entrepreneurship. This community service activity was conducted at SMK Negeri 2 majoring Engineering and Technology Meulaboh. The activities help students understand entrepreneurship and the importance of accounting as the language of business, equipping them to start businesses based on their school projects. The results indicated that students understood the relationship between accounting and entrepreneurship. The collaboration between the school, lecturers, and students created potential for sustainable activities to prepare future entrepreneurs. Continuous investment in vocational education is essential for developing entrepreneurial skills and reducing poverty in Kabupaten Aceh Barat.

Abstract

This Community Service (PkM) activity aims to address the lack of knowledge among vocational high school students about organizational structures required for entering the business world. By introducing students to the importance of institutions in business, the activity seeks to provide an understanding of institutional benefits and steps to establish. The approach involves delivering lectures on the definition and components of institutions, followed by a discussion on the practical steps to form an organization. Students were engaged in an interactive session where they learned about the types of institutions that can support their entrepreneurial ventures. The activity successfully increased students' awareness of the importance of institutions in business. Participants gained a better understanding of how institutions enhance bargaining power, open market opportunities, and foster collaboration among members. Students also recognized various institutional forms that can be developed to support business initiatives. This activity was limited to a single session at one vocational school, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Future programs could involve multiple schools to gather broader insights.

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a mandatory practice for companies, including those in the palm oil industry, which plays a significant role in the global economy. However, inconsistent accounting treatments for CSR expenditures have raised challenges in achieving transparency and accountability. This study examines the variations in CSR accounting practices among palm oil companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange and their implications for financial transparency, stakeholder trust, and corporate sustainability. The findings reveal that companies adopt diverse approaches to reporting CSR expenditures, treating them as operating expenses, tax-related costs, or long-term investments. While some companies integrate CSR into sustainability initiatives aligned with global standards like ISPO and RSPO, others treat CSR as a compliance obligation. This inconsistency underscores the absence of explicit accounting standards for CSR, creating challenges for investors, auditors, and policymakers in assessing the impact of CSR activities. This study highlights the need for harmonised regulations and standardised CSR reporting practices to enhance financial transparency and accountability. By addressing these gaps, companies can strengthen stakeholder trust, improve corporate reputation, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the palm oil industry.
