Abstract

Interest in learning as a driving factor has an important role in improving students' mathematical literacy skills. One effort to attract students' attention is to make learning innovations such as incorporating ethnomathematics in learning. This study aims to describe students' mathematical literacy ability in solving ethnomathematical problems on spldv material in terms of student learning interests. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The subjects of this study were 3 out of 29 grade VIIIB students who had been selected for high, medium and low learning interest categories. Data collection was carried out by questionnaires, tests and interviews. The main instrument in this study is an ethnomathematics-based mathematical literacy test. Data analysis techniques use interactive analysis. The results showed that the cause of students' low mathematical literacy ability was due to low interest in learning. Students with a high interest in learning are able to meet all indicators of mathematical literacy. Students with an interest in learning are having difficulty at number 1, but at question number 2 are able to meet all indicators of mathematical literacy. While students with low interest in learning for questions number 1 only meet indicators 1), 2), 3), 6) and at number 2 only meet indicators 1), 2), and 3) only. That is, students with high and moderate interest in learning have mathematical literacy skills that work well, while students with low interest in learning need teacher help to improve their mathematical literacy skills.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with low mathematical literacy skills. Improving the learning model is an action that can be taken to improve students' mathematical literacy skills. The Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) learning approach is a learning approach that is considered effective in improving mathematical literacy skills. In addition to this, self-efficacy is another factor that can affect students' mathematical literacy skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) learning model on students' mathematical literacy in terms of self-efficacy. This study used a quantitative research approach with a quasi-experimental method. The research instruments used essay tests and questionnaires. Hypothesis testing uses the Two-Way Anova test of Unequal Cells. The results concluded that there was an effect of Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) learning model and self-efficacy on students' mathematical literacy. The interaction of different learning models and self-efficacy has no effect on students' mathematical literacy skills. The results obtained Fcount = 0.106 < Ftable = 4.001 which means H0 is accepted. This means that both conventional learning models and Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) learning models students with high self-efficacy categories have superior mathematical literacy skills compared to students with moderate or low self-efficacy categories. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that there is an effect of Missouri Mathematics Project (MMP) learning model and self-efficacy on students' mathematical literacy.

Abstract

In the modern era, critical thinking is a key skill for success in both academic and professional contexts. This study investigates the critical thinking abilities of Vocational High School (SMK) students, which remain relatively low, as reflected in their difficulties solving contextual problems and presenting logical mathematical reasoning. The research aims to examine the effects of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Guided Inquiry (GI) models on students’ critical thinking skills in learning circle geometry. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Boyolali. Class XI MPLB 2 served as the experimental group using the PBL model, while Class XI PM 2 acted as the control group using the GI model. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and documentation, and analyzed using the independent samples t-test, normality test, and N-Gain test. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups: the PBL class achieved a higher average post-test score (60.91) than the GI class (43.28). The t-test results (t = 4.461, p < 0.05) confirmed that PBL was more effective than GI in improving students’ critical thinking skills, although both models produced outcomes in the low N-Gain category.

Abstract

Previous ethnomathematics studies on Indonesian batik have largely concentrated on widely recognized motifs, resulting in limited scholarly attention to several classical motifs that possess distinctive visual and philosophical characteristics. Batik Slobog Solo is one such motif that remains underexplored from a mathematical perspective. This study aims to investigate and describe the mathematical concepts embedded within the Batik Slobog Solo motif as a foundation for developing culturally contextualized mathematics learning. The research adopts a qualitative design employing an ethnographic approach, with data collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation at the Danar Hadi Batik Museum in Surakarta. The exploration process follows four guiding questions: “Where do I start looking?”, “How do I find it?”, “How do I know that I have found something significant?”, and “How to understand it?”. The findings indicate that Batik Slobog Solo embodies various mathematical concepts, including plane geometry and transformational geometry, arithmetic patterns represented through square numbers and arithmetic sequences, as well as discrete mathematics concepts involving tiling and graph theory. These concepts are reflected in the repetition, regularity, spatial relationships, and systematic arrangement of motif elements. The results demonstrate that Batik Slobog Solo has substantial potential as a culturally grounded instructional resource that supports meaningful mathematics learning. This study contributes to ethnomathematics literature by expanding the scope of mathematical analysis on less-explored batik motifs and emphasizes the importance of integrating local cultural heritage into mathematics education to enhance conceptual understanding while promoting cultural preservation.

Abstract

Contextual problems play an important role in learning in vocational high schools because they connect mathematical concepts with real-life situations relevant to students. However, studies that specifically examine vocational high school students’ inductive thinking skills in solving contextual mathematical problems, particularly in geometric sequences, viewed from the level of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL), are still limited. This study aims to analyze the inductive thinking abilities of vocational high school students in solving contextual geometric sequence problems based on their SRL levels. A qualitative approach with descriptive analysis was employed. The research subjects consisted of 33 eleventh-grade students from the Accounting and Institutional Finance class at SMK Negeri 1 Boyolali. The results showed that 3 students were categorized as having high SRL, 24 students had moderate SRL, and 6 students had low SRL. Analysis of students’ responses revealed that students with high SRL were able to meet all indicators of inductive reasoning, namely observing regularities, identifying patterns, and formulating generalizations. Students with moderate SRL were able to observe regularities and identify patterns but experienced difficulties in formulating generalizations. Meanwhile, students with low SRL were only able to observe regularities. These findings indicate that SRL levels influence students’ inductive thinking abilities. This research revealing students’ characteristics and difficulties at each inductive reasoning indicator based on SRL levels within the context of geometric sequences in vocational high schools, as well as providing practical implications for teachers in designing more effective contextual mathematics learning.
