Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyse the local economic development strategy through the empowerment of Balung Kuwuk MSMEs in Drenges Village. Methodology/approach: This study employed a qualitative descriptive method utilising a case study approach. Data collection techniques included observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The analysis of data to determine the development strategy for Balung Kuwuk MSMEs was conducted using a SWOT analysis, combined with the Internal-External Matrix, to formulate context-specific empowerment strategies for rural MSMEs. Results/findings: The findings indicate that Balung Kuwuk MSMEs possess significant potential to drive the local economy in Drenges Village, supported by the abundant availability of cassava as the primary raw material. Nevertheless, community empowerment efforts to develop these MSMEs have not been effectively implemented, necessitating an aggressive strategy to strengthen and expand their capacity. Conclusion: Balung Kuwuk MSMEs can serve as a strategic driver of the local economy if supported by targeted, aggressive, and sustainable development strategies that fully empower MSME actors, strengthen institutional capacity, and optimise available local resources effectively Limitations: This case study has a narrow geographical scope, being limited to a single village, and therefore cannot be generalised to other rural or urban areas with different social, economic, cultural, and natural conditions and potentials. Contribution: This study provides input for government institutions and related agencies to support the development of Balung Kuwuk MSMEs in Drenges Village, aiming to improve human resource capacity and consistently enhance product quality.

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs are an effective strategy for empowering farmers, particularly in the horticultural sector. In practice, few CSR programs focus on farmer empowerment, underscoring the need for a study on how community-oriented CSR programs can synergize with a company's business objectives. This study aims to examine the process and impact of empowering paprika farmers through Pizza Hut Indonesia's CSR program within the Tunas Tani Pangrango Farmers Group in Bogor. The study was conducted from August 2024 to May 2025. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews with 13 informants, observation, and documentation. The results show that the empowerment process involves strategy identification, group development, participatory planning, activity implementation, and joint monitoring and evaluation. The program has had a positive impact on farmers' productivity, income, technical capacity, and market access. Socially, institutional strengthening and collective learning among farmers have occurred. However, challenges remain in the environmental aspect, particularly the use of chemical pesticides. It can be concluded that Pizza Hut Indonesia's CSR program increases farmer empowerment and encourages independent farming businesses, but it should pay greater attention to environmental sustainability by using environmentally friendly inputs and adopting sustainable cultivation technologies. This study found: (1) integration of extension, training, research, and supporting subsystems (agricultural facilities and markets) in Pizza Hut Indonesia's CSR program in Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems; and (2) empirical evidence that with a community empowerment approach, CSR program obligations are able to synergize with the company's business mission.

Abstract

The social capital approach and collaboration are the main focus in the management of natural resources such as forests. The social capital owned by women forest farmers is realized through social leadership, local wisdom, trust, and social institutions. This research aims to map social capital in ecological, social, and economic aspects of forest conservation efforts. The research was conducted on women forest farmers on the slopes of Mount Kendeng Utara, Central Java, namely in Blora Regency and Rembang Regency. Data were collected through moderate participation observation and in-depth interviews with several informants, then analyzed using qualitative methods of case studies. The typologies of social capital found are divided into three: bonding, bridging, and linking. In sustainable forest management, the dominant social capital in the economic aspect is bonding social capital, which increases the motivation, solidarity, productivity, and income diversification of women forest farmers. Bridging social capital strengthens social and ecological sustainability through compliance with the chairman of the Forest Farmers Group who are indigenous leaders, facilitating the exchange of information and forest management practices. Strengthening the social capital of women forest farmers requires a participatory, equitable, and gender-just approach to achieve sustainable forest management.
