Abstract

Abstract

The Sasak people of Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, are rich in oral traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. One of these traditions is Lelakaq, a form of traditional poetry that embodies cultural values, history, and local wisdom. The aim of this study is to conduct a semiotic analysis of Lelakaq as an ethnolinguistic inquiry and to explore its implementation in learning practices. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The participants included cultural leaders, community members, teachers, and students. Data collection instruments consisted of checklists, observation sheets, interview guidelines, and tests. Data were gathered by compiling Lelakaq poems from various sources, distributing response questionnaires, and conducting in-depth interviews to confirm and strengthen findings. In addition, tests were administered to evaluate students’ conceptual understanding and cultural literacy. Data analysis applied Barthes’ semiotic approach to the poems, narrative descriptive analysis for interviews and student responses, and simple statistical analysis for test results. The findings reveal that Lelakaq poetry of the Sasak community serves multiple functions: aesthetic, social, cultural, and educational. Semiotic analysis indicates that students found it easier to grasp denotative meanings compared to connotative ones, with an average score of 74.88 (Good category). Specifically, 32% of students achieved Excellent, 24% Good, 32% Fair, and 12% Poor. Triangulation of data highlights a generational gap in understanding cultural symbols, underscoring the need for creative strategies and integration of Lelakaq into learning processes to foster cultural literacy, strengthen local identity, and enhance conceptual comprehension

Abstract

Despite its critical role in improving learning, the quality of teaching practices often stagnates due to the limited use of systematic reflective approaches among educators. This study investigates Lesson Study as a structured model to enhance reflective teaching and strengthen instructional quality through a qualitative descriptive-analytical literature review. This paper synthesizes findings from more than 50 scholarly sources, including Scopus-indexed articles, SINTA-accredited national journals, conference proceedings, and institutional reports from OECD, UNESCO, and the World Bank, published between 2010 and 2025. Through a systematic search using keywords related to “Lesson Study” and “teaching reflection,” data were analyzed thematically with the support of NVivo. The review offers an integrated synthesis of how Lesson Study contributes to teaching effectiveness, professional teacher reflection, and student learning, while also mapping contextual barriers within the Indonesian education system. Findings indicate that Lesson Study can enhance teaching effectiveness through the plan–do–see–reflect cycle, foster a culture of professional reflection, and support gains in student learning outcomes, although its implementation in Indonesia remains inconsistent due to time limitations, administrative demands, and hierarchical work culture. Results further suggest that Lesson Study may be more effective than workshops or individual self-evaluation because of its collaborative and evidence-based nature. To strengthen sustainability, strategies include alignment with the Guru Penggerak program, dedicated reflection time, and the development of cross-school professional communities. Overall, this review highlights the potential of Lesson Study to support long-term improvement in teaching quality and contribute to the achievement of SDG 4 in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article presents a narrative literature review on language, communication, and meaning in multicultural contexts. Drawing on work in intercultural communication, intercultural pragmatics, discourse analysis, and multimodality, it explains how cultural frameworks shape communicative norms and expectations, and how meaning is negotiated across linguistic and cultural boundaries. The review highlights the importance of pragmatic competence, including awareness of speech acts, politeness strategies, and contextual inference, for successful intercultural interaction. It also considers discourse-analytic and multimodal perspectives on identity construction and power relations, particularly in digital and globalized environments. Deardorff’s process model of intercultural competence is used to show how attitudes, knowledge, and skills support effective and appropriate communication. The article proposes an integrative conceptual model that connects cultural frameworks, semiotic resources, interactional practices, and intercultural competence as key components of meaning-making. Implications are discussed for language and teacher education, organizational communication, and future research on multicultural encounters.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of social inequality in law enforcement in Indonesia and how economic, power, educational, and gender factors influence access to justice. The phenomenon of legal inequality indicates that the Indonesian legal system has not fully implemented the principle of equality before the law. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were collected through analysis of various secondary sources such as scientific journals. The results show that inequality in law enforcement is still influenced by economic factors, where the poor have difficulty obtaining adequate legal assistance, while influential groups have the financial capacity to influence the legal process. In addition, low legal literacy, geographical inequality, and gender bias also exacerbate inequality in the legal system. Discriminatory practices by law enforcement officers against lower-class communities also weaken public trust in legal institutions. This study emphasizes the importance of structural reform in the legal system so that justice can be accessed equally regardless of social class.
