Abstract

Abstract

Proportional reasoning has been greatly influencing the development of students’ mathematical abilities. Along with the area conservation ability, it helps elementary students comprehend area measurement. This exploratory study aimed to produce qualitative-descriptive data on elementary students’ proportional reasoning in solving the conservation of plane figures. The study used guided-unguided area conservation problems using a proportional reasoning level as the analysis framework. Data were collected from 4 primary school students in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, who were in fifth-grade class. The students' strategies used were identified to analyze the students' proportional reasoning in solving area conservation. Results show that the level of proportional reasoning varies from zero to two. Regarding the students' proportional reasoning levels, most of the students' strategies use visual clues and cute paste strategies. Only one student can reach the level of quantitative reasoning by using a formula to compare both area measurements. Interestingly, the problem of the conservation of plane figures failed to reveal students' formal proportional reasoning due to their insufficient knowledge of fractions, division, multiplication, and decimals. Some implications regarding students' proportional reasoning and interventions in the area conservation problem are discussed.

Abstract

Effectiveness is one of the main problems in the online learning process. This becomes a benchmark for success in achieving learning objectives. Therefore, educators must be careful in choosing creative and innovative strategies both in terms of learning strategies and assessment strategies. Like the Self-Evaluation Exit Ticket assessment strategy which offers various advantages for educators and students. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of applying the Self-Evaluation Exit Ticket technique as an assessment strategy in learning. The subjects in this research were eighteen Mathematics Education students at a private higher education institution in Indonesia who took Number Theory courses online. Where, the material that will be covered in this course is the basic concept of congruence, complete residue systems, reduced residue systems, Euler's concept, and Euler's theorem. This type of research is quantitative descriptive. Based on the research results, all subjects experienced improvement while implementing the Self-Evaluation Exit Ticket assessment strategy. This increase was seen at meeting 2, namely as many as 55% of students were able to determine their learning outcomes, whereas previously at meeting 1 only 33% of students were able to determine their learning outcomes. Subjects thought that learning implemented using Self-Evaluation Exit Tickets was more fun, interesting, and encouraged subjects to continue learning. This means that the Self-Evaluation Exit Ticket assessment strategy can be effective and possible to apply in online learning.

Abstract

Linear equations and linear functions are important materials for students in developing their in-depth knowledge of arithmetic and algebra. However, there is a gap between potential development and actual development, which causes obstacles for students in understanding the concepts of these two materials. This gap results in other obstacles, including a fixed mindset in mathematics. The results of interviews with secondary school teachers in Indonesia also show that students have problems in number operations and motivation to learn mathematics. The design used in this study uses a descriptive qualitative study based on the results of literature studies, interviews with subject teachers, and the author's experience as an educator. This study also uses the theory of zone proximal development and mathematical mindset as a frame for preparing alternative material for equations and linear functions based on visual representations in mathematics. The results of this study contribute to providing alternative materials to reduce these barriers using a visual representation approach in mathematics. The author also provides alternative teaching arts to anticipate obstacles that arise when implementing mathematics material based on visual representation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mathematical reasoning abilities in the subject of Two-Variable Linear Inequality Systems (SPtLDV). This study was conducted because many students still have difficulty understanding the concepts and steps for solving SPtLDV, especially in understanding the relationship between variables and drawing logical conclusions from a mathematical problem. These difficulties often arise when students have to interpret mathematical statements into inequalities and describe the solution area on a coordinate plane. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with 14 students from class XI of SMA Negeri 12 Bandar Lampung as subjects. Data were collected through mathematical reasoning ability tests and interviews to explore the students' thinking processes. The results show that students' mathematical reasoning abilities vary. High-ability students are able to meet all reasoning indicators, from making assumptions, performing mathematical manipulations, providing reasons for solutions, to drawing correct conclusions. Students with moderate abilities were still lacking in writing down the steps of manipulation systematically and tended to make small errors in calculations. Meanwhile, students with low abilities had difficulty understanding basic concepts and often made mistakes in manipulating the variables x and y, resulting in inaccurate solutions.

Abstract

The main objective of using Wordwall learning media is to facilitate students in understanding mathematical concepts, particularly in composition function material, through interactive and engaging activities. The method used is a quasi-experiment with a Nonequivalent Control Group Pretest-Posttest Design involving two grades of XI high school, namely the experimental class that learned using WordWall media and the control class that learned conventionally. Data were obtained through essay tests that had been tested for validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminatory power, then analyzed using the Liliefors normality test, Bartlett's homogeneity test, and the Independent Sample t-test with the help of SPSS. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous, and the significance value (Sig.) <0.05, which indicates a significant difference between the understanding of the concept in the experimental and control classes. In addition, more than 75% of students in the experimental class achieved the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM), so it can be concluded that the use of WordWall media is effective in improving the understanding of mathematical concepts.
